The Position of the Sunnah in Islam: From the Qur’an
1. Nor does he speak of desire. It is only a revelation revealed (Najm: 3-4)
2. We have, without doubt, sent down the Reminder; and We will assuredly guard it (from
corruption). (Hijr: 9)
3. And We have sent down to you (O Prophet) the Reminder, so that you may explain to people
what has been revealed for them, and perhaps they will reflect. (Nahl: 44)
4. Whatever the Messenger gives you, take it. And whatever he forbids you from, leave it. And fear
Allah. Surely Allah is severe in punishment. (Hashr: 7)
5. Say, [O Muhammad], "If you should love Allah, then follow me, [so] Allah will love you and
forgive you your sins. And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful." (Aal-Imraan: 31)
6. But no, by your Lord, they will not [truly] believe until they make you, [O Muhammad], judge
concerning that over which they dispute among themselves and then find within themselves no
discomfort from what you have judged and submit in [full, willing] submission. (Nisa: 65)
1. The Prophet ( )ﷺsaid: Beware! I have been
given the Qur'an and with it something similar,
yet the time is coming when a man replete on
his couch will say: Keep to the Qur'an; what
you find in it to be permissible treat as
permissible, and what you find in it to be
prohibited treat as prohibited. (Abu Dawud)
2. Ayub as-Sakhtiyaani: A man said to Mutarif ibn Abd’Allah, “Do not narrate to us except
that which is in the Qur’an”. He replied, “By Allah we are not seeking to replace the Qur’an
with it (Hadith), however, we are seeking by it the one who is more knowledgeable of the
Qur’an than us”. (Madkhal, Jami’ Bayan al-’Ilm)
3. al-Awza'i, Makhool, Yahya ibn Abi Kathir, and others would say, “The Qur’an is in more
need of the Sunnah, than the Sunnah is in need of the Qur’an...” (ad-Darimi)
Ittiba’ Amongst the Sahaba
- Their extreme obedience and copying of him in their lives and worship, doing what he does
and leaving off what he left off
1. While the Messenger of Allah ( )ﷺwas leading his Companions in prayer, he took off his sandals and laid them on
his left side; so when the people saw this, they removed their sandals. When the Messenger of Allah ( )ﷺfinished
his prayer, he asked: What made you remove your sandals? The replied: We saw you remove your sandals, so we
removed our sandals. The Messenger of Allah ( )ﷺthen said: Gabriel came to me and informed me that there was
filth in them. When any of you comes to the mosque, he should see; if he finds filth on his sandals, he should wipe it
off and pray in them. (Abu Dawud)
2. Allah's Messenger ( )ﷺwore a gold ring or a silver ring and placed its stone towards the palm of his hand and had
the name 'Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah' engraved on it. The people also started wearing gold rings like it, but
when the Prophet ( )ﷺsaw them wearing such rings, he threw away his own ring and said. "I will never wear it,"
and then wore a silver ring, whereupon the people too started wearing silver rings. Ibn `Umar added: After the
Prophet ( )ﷺAbu Bakr wore the ring, and then `Umar and then `Uthman wore it till it fell in the Aris well from
`Uthman. (Bukhari)
3. Umar said: My Ansari neighbor from Bani Umaiya bin Zaid who used to live at `Awali Al-Medina and used to visit the
Prophet ( )ﷺby turns. He used to go one day and I another day. When I went I used to bring the news of that day
regarding the Divine Inspiration and other things, and when he went, he used to do the same for me. (Bukhari)
