B. Presenting examples/instances I will show you the picture of burning paper.

of the new lesson (PRE- We have here a paper and fire.
ACTIVITY)

What can you see or observe in the first picture? Ma’am the tip of the paper is on fire.

How about in the second picture can you describe your

observation? On the second picture the whole paper is burning.

What can you say to the last picture? The paper turn into black ashes.
How can you describe the process before , during and At first the paper which is whole is lit by fire. As time pass
after of the pictures shown. whole paper is on fire. The paper become ashes afterwards.

There is change of color Ma’am

What is the evidence you see in the burning of paper?

Let’s try to analyze this animated picture of metal

corrosion.

In your opinion how do metal rust ? When iron is exposed to moisture or oxygen, oxidation occurs.
Both oxygen and moisture are catalysts for rusting
That’s Correct!

Moisture and Oxygen makes the metals rust.

Now I want you to observe what I’m going to do in this

experiment and list down the materials used in the
experiment

Are you ready class? Yes Ma’am

Write your observation on your notebook.
Is that clear? Yes Ma’am

The first Experiment is The Mixture of Vinegar, Baking

The raisin go up and down and there also a bubble effect when
That’s right ! the vinegar added in baking soda and water.

5.) What did you observe when those materials are

combined?

Very good!

6.) What is the evidence you see from the results

when you combine the materials? There is a formation of bubbles

From the 3 activity you observe let’s get the

evidence that these materials undergo in chemical
change and chemical reaction.

In the burning of paper, when paper is heated with

fire it turns into ashes resulting in change of it’s
color. In the Metal corrosion the forming of rust in
the metal occurs and for the baking soda experiment
as you mix all the substance a chemical reaction
occurs by the appearance of bubble.

When substances combine and undergo chemical

changes, we say that a chemical reaction has
occurred

D. Discussing new concepts and First Let’s identify the parts of chemical equation
practicing new skills 2
(DEEPENING)

Writing Chemical Equation

Writing chemical reactions are important for chemists. It

is an important language that translates the reactions
into easy, readable and understandable sentence, which
we call the chemical equation. Word reactions are
translated into symbols for easy reading. By looking at
the chemical equations, the reader can easily interpret
what transpired in the reaction.

For example: The reaction of nitrogen gas and hydrogen
gas reacting to produce ammonia, NH3 ,also a gas:

N2 + H2 → NH3
There are conventions and simple rules to follow in
writing chemical equations.
They are as follows:

1.) The starting material or substances called

reactants are written on the left side and the
resulting substances called products are written
on the right side.

N2 + H2 is the reactants and NH3 is the product

In the activity we made earlier in the

In burning of paper the starting materials will be

the paper and fire which serves as reactants and
the ash is the resulting substance

In Metal Corrosion, the metal and oxygen is the

starting materials and the Metal rust is the
resulting substance

And for the experiment 1 the starting materials

are baking soda, vinegar, and food color and for
experiment 2 the starting materials are baking
soda, vinegar, water and raisins both experiment
has resulting substance of bubble

2.) An arrow (→) is used to represent the

conversion of the reactants to products. This may
literally mean “to yield” or “to form”. The plus
sign (+) means “to react with” or “to combine
with”.

3.) It is recommended that the states of the

substances be indicated by placing the following
symbols after the formula of the substance

For example, the following equation is more descriptive

of the reaction given earlier:

N2(g) + H2(g) → NH3(g)

4.) A chemical reaction, the law of conservation of

mass holds. A balanced equation conforms to
this law. As mentioned in the previous lesson,
the number of atoms of each kind on the left and
right sides of the arrow must be equal.

N2(g) + H2(g) → NH3(g)

In Reactants
How many atom is there in Nitrogen?

How many atom is there is Hydrogen?

As you see Nitrogen and oxygen has atoms

already that’s because they are di atomic. See the
Page 9 of 22
difference on picture I present in the part of
chemical equation where Mercury there (Hg)
only have 1 atom

These are the list of di atomic 2 Ma’am

2 Ma’am

In Product
How many atom is there in Nitrogen?

How many atom is there is Hydrogen?

Do you think the atom on each element from the

reactants and products is equal ?

Then we have to balance it since chemical

reaction, the law of conservation of mass holds.
A balanced equation conforms to this law.
1 Ma’am
N2 (g) + 3H2 (g) → 2NH3 (g)
2–N–1 3 Ma’am
2–H–3
(lets add 2 molecules
to make it balance) No Ma’am

N2 (g) + H2 (g) → 2NH3 (g)

2–H–2
2–H–6
(when we add
to molecules
the hydrogen in right side it
became 6.
So we have
to add 3 molecules
to the left side
in hydrogen too
to make it balance.)

N2 (g) + 3H2 (g) → 2NH3 (g)

Kind of atom No. of atom in No. of atom in

left side right side
N 2 2x1=2
H 3X2= 6 2x3= 6

( Note : as what you observe in the chemical equation

the coefficient can be change but the subscript or the
number of atom can’t change because it their oxidation
number so it’s fix )

Try this:

Write the chemical equation for this reaction:

Hydrogen gas and chlorine gas react to make Hydrogen

Chloride, also a gas.

For Hydrogen – H2
For Chlorine – Cl2
For Hydrogen Chloride – HCl

Again this how chemical equation looks like.

Strategy:

1.) Identify the reactants and products:

H2+Cl2 → HCl
In this chemical equation what is the reactants
and what is the product

2.) Indicate the states of the substances by placing

their symbols on the right side of the substances

H2 (g) +Cl2 (g) → HCl (g)

3.) Affix the number of molecules as coefficients at

the left side of the substances

4.) Check the equation if the equation is balance. it

conforms with the Law of Conservation of Mass.
2–H–1
2 – Cl – 1
So it’s not balance, let’s balance it.

H2 (g) +Cl2 (g) → 2HCl (g)

We add 2 molecules on the product see the result
2–H–2
2 – Cl – 2

Kind of atom No. of atom in No. of at in

left side right side
H 2 2x1= 2
Cl 2 2x1= 2

Balancing Equations
There is a way in which the atoms on the left and the
right side of the arrow will be equal. This section will
focus on the procedure of balancing equations by
inspection.

In general, a balanced chemical equation is written in

two steps:

1.) Write the formula and state or phase of the

reactants and products.
2.) Balance the number of atoms of each kind by
using coefficients. Write the coefficients on the
left side of the substances.

Note: The chemical formulas must not be changed. The

subscripts must not be changed. Only the coefficients
are to be adjusted.
Example 1. Write the balanced equation for the reaction
of hydrogen gas reacts with bromine gas to produce
hydrogen bromide, also a gas.

Step 1. Write the chemical equation

H2(g) + Br2(g) → HBr(g)

Step 2. Balance the number of atoms

H2(g) + Br2(g) → HBr(g)

Upon inspection, there are 2 atoms of hydrogen in the

left side, and only 1 atom of hydrogen on the right side,
also there are 2 atoms of bromine in the left side, and
only 1 atom of bromine on the right side.

2–H–1
2 – Br – 1

We shall focus on balancing the oxygen atom on the

right side by putting a coefficient/ molecules 2 at the left
side of HBr.

H2(g) + Br2(g) → 2HBr(g)

2–H–2
2 – Br – 2
Step 3. Check the equation if it conforms with the Law
of Conservation of Mass.
Kind of atom No. of atom/s No. of atom/s
on the left side on the right
side
H 2 2x1 = 2
Br 2 2x1 = 2

Example 2

Write the balanced equation for the reaction of iron

solid react with oxygen gas to produce iron(III) oxide ,
which is solid.

(Info : this word equation is one of the activity we made

earlier in metal rust).
1. Write the formula
Fe(s)+O2(g)→ Fe2O3(s)

Step 2. Balance the number of atoms

Fe(s)+O2(g)→ Fe2O3(s)

Upon inspection, there are 1 atom of iron in the left side,

and only 2 atoms of iron on the right side. There are 2
atoms of oxygen in the left side, and 3 atoms of oxygen
on the right side.

1–F–2
2–O–3

We shall focus on balancing the iron atom on the left

side by putting a coefficient/ molecules 2 at the left side
of Fe. It will bring chemical equation of :
2Fe(s)+O2(g)→ Fe2O3(s)

So we now have a balance iron, let ‘s now balance the

atoms of oxygen by adding a coefficient 3 to the left
side that make the Oxygen on the left side 6 and think a
number that if you multiply to the atoms (subscript) of
oxygen in the right side will result into 6 and that is
coefficient 2
It will bring chemical equation of :
2Fe(s) + 3O2(g)→ 2Fe2O3(s)
Let’s check again the atoms of iron and oxygen
2 – Fe – 4
6–O–6

Remember that chemical balancing is trial and error so

let’s balance the iron again by changing the coefficient
of iron in reactants part into 4 and it will give you this
equation now
4Fe(s) + 3O2(g)→ 2Fe2O3(s)

Lets check again the atoms for iron and oxygen

4 – Fe – 4
6–O–6

Step 3. Check the equation if it conforms with the Law

of Conservation of Mass.

Kind of atom No. of atom/s No. of atom/s

on the left side on the right
side
Fe 4x1 = 4 2x2 = 4
O 3x2 = 6 2x3 = 6

E. Developing mastery (POST- Let’s check your understanding about the lesson by
ACTIVITY) having this activity.

Direction: Balance the equation to know if you

understand the chemical balancing.

Potassium reacts with Oxygen to form Potassium Oxide

K(s) + O2(g) → K2O(s)

(Info: K2O is widely used in the agricultural industry as
a fertilizer).

Before we proceed to in balancing this equation what is

the parts of chemical equation we discuss earlier ?

Very good! Ma’am reactants and products.

In the equation what is the reactants and what is the

products?

That’s correct! K(s) + O2(g) Ma’am is the reactants and K2O is the product

Can you count the atom/s present in reactants and in

product? Ma’am there is 1 atom for potassium (K) on the left side and
there is 2 atoms potassium (K) on the right side and Oxygen
(O) have 2 atoms on the left side and 1 atom on the right side.

That’s right so now I’ll give you time to balance the

equation using the step by step process earlier. Since
we’re done on step 1 you can now proceed to step 2 and
3.

Are you ready class?

Yes Ma’am.

K(s) + O2(g) → K2O(s)

1–K–2
2–O–1

To balance it let’s balance first the potassium (K) by adding 2

coefficient in K in the reactants
2K(s) + O2(g) → K2O(s)
Now we have
2–K–2
2–O–1

Let’s balance now the oxygen by adding 2 coefficient to the

product.
2K(s) + O2(g) → 2K2O(s)
It will give
2 – K – 4 because we multiply 2 ( coefficient) to the numbers of atom
2–O–2

Remember that chemical balancing is trial and error so let’s

balance the K again by changing the coefficient of K in
reactants part into 4 and it will give you this equation now

4K(s) + O2(g) → 2K2O(s)

4–K–4
2–O–2

We already balance the equation.

F. Finding practical applications of

concepts and skills in daily
living (APPLICATION) Effect in real life :

(students answer may vary)

In medicine the doctors have to find the right dose by
using your body weight to find the right of amount. If
they will give you too much medicine then you could
overdose but if you don’t get enough it will not work.

G. Making generalizations and For todays discussion let’s summarize it by answering

abstractions about the lesson the following questions.
(GENERALIZATION) Choose Thumbs up 👍 if the state is correct and thumbs
down 👎 if not then state why it became incorrect .

1.) The starting material or substances called

products.
And why? Thumbs down 👎 Ma’am

Correct! Because reactants is the starting materials or substance and

2.) N2 + H2 → NH3 is a sample of word equation. products is the resulting substance.
And why?
That’s right ! Thumbs down 👎 Ma’am
Because it is a chemical equation Ma’am
3.) Chemical equation must conforms with the Law
of Conservation of Mass.
That’s right!
Thumbs up 👍 Ma’am
So the number of atoms of each kind on the left and
right sides of the arrow must be equal.

Ok class supply the missing part of equation.
