B. Answer the following questions


1. In your own words justify the title I keep my tryst with Everest ?

1. 'Tryst' refers to an appointed meeting between lovers. Bachendri


pal was a mountaineer who loved mountains and accomplished
the arduous journey to reach at the top of Everest, becoming the
1st woman to do so. In this way the title ‘I keep my tryst with
Everest’ is completely apt for this story.

2. Bachendri took a risk and for Ang Dorjee it was a challenge.


Justify the statement ?

2. Climbing any mountains is risky, when it comes to Everest the risk


is only greater. Bachendri deciding to climb Everest was putting
her life at risk. Whereas , for Ang Dorjee it was a challenge
because guiding Pal on her journey to the top was a huge
responsibility.

3. Ang Dorjee team consisted of three members. Describe how each


one contributed to making their ascent a success. What did you
observe about team work ?

3. The three members were Ang Dorjee , Lhatoo Dorjee and


Bachendri herself. Ang Dorjee was the rope-leader who guided the
group, Lhatoo was Bachendri's rope-mate who ensured the climbing
gear and supplies were always in right condition and Bachendri was a
responsible quick learner who followed all instructions. Together
these three made their ascent a success.

4. Why was Ang Dorjee surprised when Bachendri Pal said she was
not tired on reaching the summit camp ?

4. The path to the top was strenuous and tough, on top of that they
completed the journey to the summit camp in less than two hours
which usually requires four. In spite of this, Bachendri was not tired
her stamina surprised Ang Dorjee.

C. Read the lines and answer the questions.


1. Ang Dorjee was going to climb without oxygen. But , because of
this , his feet would get very cold. He thus wanted to avoid long
exposure at the summit camp. he had therefore to either get to the
peak and back to the South Col the same day or abandon the
attempt.

(b) What two considerations did Ang Dorjee have in order to make a
successful climb ?

(b) Ang Dorjee was climbing without oxygen therefore he had to take
into consideration the long exposure to the cold and making it
back to the South Col on time.

2. Beyond the south summit , the breeze increased. At that height ,


the eddies of strong winds whipped up the powder snow; reducing
the visibility to nil. On many occasions , I had to get into a crouching
position with my back to the onslaught of icy wind.

(b) The climb between the South Summit and Hillary’s Step was tricky
as it was ridge with sheer drop on both sides. One misstep could
lead the climber to their certain death.

3. My heart stood still. It dawned on me that success was within


reach. And at 1:07 pm on 23 May, 1984. I stood on top of Everest, the
first Indian women to have done so.
(a) Whose heart stood still? What did the person realise ?

(a) Bachendri Pal’s heart stood still. She realised that she stood on
top of Everest and was the first Indian women to have done so.
(b) How does this narrative end ?

(b) The narrative ends with Bachendri remembering her parents and
kissing the mountain floor. She felt gratitude and respect for Ang
Dorjee, her rope leader who helped her reach the top. She even
congratulates him for his second successful ascent.

D. Think and discuss.

1. Why were her parents the first persons that Bachendri


remembered as she stood on top of the Everest ? Who is the other
person she paid respect to ?

a. It is because of the support and encouragement we receive from


our parents that we are able to reach our goals and fulfil or
dreams. It was only natural Bachendri remembers her parents as
they must too like every other parent have had encouraged their
daughter to strive towards achieving her goal.

The other person Bachendri pays respect to is Ang Dorjee her rope-
leader who helped her reach the summit of the Mount Everest.

2. The story shows a close relationship between the climbers and


perfect team spirit. Bring out instances of this from the narrative.
What have you learnt about team spirit after reading this narrative.
