Description of Procedure
Quantitative measurement of ethanol (ethyl alcohol) in the blood for the assessment of recent
ethanol ("alcohol") ingestion. Ethanol is one of the most well known depressants of the central
nervous system and is commonly abused.
Indications CONSIDERATIONS
suspected alcohol intoxication, car wreck for Nursing Interventions (pre, intra, post)
a rule out, drownings
use alcohol free swabs, if person is alove get
blood sample from the arm, if dead use the
aorta, collect serum or whole blood,
document exact date and time of sampe
taken
Interpretation of Findings
Client Education
Normal levels: 0-50mg/dL
explain procedure, should be advised of legal
rights, evidencde may be ued in court later
Critical Levels: greater than 300 mg/dL
