Unit 1: Module 2 The Earth’s Interior
Topic/ Title: The Composition of the Earth’s Interior
Grade Level: 10
Time Allotment: 60 minutes
Date: August 16, 2018
Performance Standards
Understand the relationship among the locations of volcanoes, earthquakes, epicenters, and mountain ranges.
Learning Competencies and Objectives
1. Describe the internal structure of the Earth.

OBJECTIVES:
1. Describe the properties of the layers of the Earth.
2. Identify the composition of the layers of the Earth.
3. Value the importance of conserving mineral resources.
ELICIT ( 5 minutes) MATERIALS
1. The teacher will present a graphic organizer and ask the learners to complete the Graphic organizer
concepts about seismic waves.

Interdisciplinary: ENGLISH
ENGAGE ( 15 minutes)
1. The teacher will give an activity to the learners about the layers of the Earth using Chart/table
Defining Format Strategy.
Question Category Characteristic
What is crust? a layer of the Earth that
Crust is
What is mantle?
Mantle is
What is outer core?
Outer core is
What is inner core?
Inner core

Interdisciplinary: ENGLISH
EXPLORE ( 10 minutes)
1. The learners will be divided into five groups Activity Sheet
2. Each group will perform the activity “Our Dynamic Earth” (p 52 from the Learner’s
Materials).
Interdisciplinary: MAPEH (Arts)
EXPLAIN ( 15 minutes)
1. Using the learners’ answers on the guide questions below, ask them to make a Manila paper, marker
short story.

Guide Questions:
1. What element is the most abundant in the Earth’s crust?
2. What elements make up most of the mantle?
3. What is the special feature of the upper mantle?
4. What materials make up the inner core?
5. Is the inner core solid, liquid, or gas? What keeps it in this phase?
6. Compare the inner core and the outer core.

2. Let the learners present their answers using Profiles Strategy.

Interdisciplinary: ENGLISH
ELABORATE ( 5 minutes)
 How did scientists discover that layers of the Earth differ in phases?
 How can we harness the elements/minerals present in the crust?
 What would be the possible effects of excessive mining in the environment
EVALUATE ( 10 minutes)
Complete the text below using words from the word bank given. Paper and pencil

____________ is the most abundant element in the Earth’s crust. The elements
_________, ____________, _______________ and _____________ make up the mantle.
The outer and the inner core are made mostly of ________________ and nickel. The outer
core reaches a temperature of 2000ºC. With this temperature, there elements melts. Thus,
this layer is _______________. It is compact despite of the very hot temperature because of
the very great pressure that keeps this layer in the _________ phase.
nickel oxygen magnesium liquid
iron silicon solid

Interdisciplinary: ENGLISH
EXTEND :
Compose a song describing the properties and composition of the layers of the Earth.

Interdisciplinary: MAPEH (Music)
