Leadership Impact Plan

Throughout the course of this program, I have gained insight to who I am as a person and

as a teacher. I have discovered that I am stronger than I thought I was and that I can become the

leader that I want to see in my life. Within this paper, I intend to reflect on my growth, connect

my knowledge to my experience, connect what I have learned to discipline, discover risks, view

my ethical perspectives, and look at the steps I have taken to become a leader. This reflection

will allow me to look deeper inside my personality and discover how I can become a leader.

Reflection

In the past, I never saw myself as a leader. I felt that I would never take the steps to move

up or become a leader in any form. However, I have learned that being a leader doesn’t mean you

o.
have to hold a higher position. I can be a leader just by modeling leadership skills to my

colleagues. Just in the last few weeks, I have seen an everyday teacher become the coordinator

for summer school and do well at it. She has inspired me to believe that it is a strong quality to

for all to work and grow in.

Connections to Experience

I have not had the opportunity to be a leader very much. I have only been a leader in the
Th

aspect of helping new teachers at my school navigate the school, system, and students. I have

had the opportunity to help other teachers with classroom management. I did not see these
sh

opportunities as leadership opportunities. However, I have learned that this is sometimes the

most important part of leadership. Because I have had the opportunity to learn more about

standards, students, leadership, and education in general, I have the knowledge to provide other

teachers with skills needed to survive in this career. I have learned how to use the standards to

create quality lesson and unit plans. I have learned the reasons behind student behavior and

classroom management. These ideas can help make me a better leader by allowing me to share

what I have learned and model my knowledge (Holsinger, 2018).

Connections to Discipline

As a high school mathematics teacher, I have typically been focused on only the math

work required for my subjects. However, in this program, I have learned that math can cross

m
er as
disciplines. Mathematics is used so much in science. Also, mathematics requires students to be

co
eH w
proficient in reading and reading comprehension. Knowing this, I can work with teachers of

o.
other disciplines to form a cross-discipline lesson that will benefit students in various forms. I
rs e
ou urc
can also use what I have learned about literacy and show other teachers that regardless of

discipline, we must all look at literacy development in our classes and use it to improve the skills
o

of our students. In addition, I can provide assistance in lesson planning and standards
vi y re

development to other teachers.

Risk-Taking
ed d
ar stu

Starting this program was a risk that I chose to take. I was unsure how my year was going

to play out with the pandemic. However, I ended up also struggling with keeping up with the
is

program throughout multiple power outages and personal hardship caused by two back-to-back
Th

hurricanes. I almost gave up at that point when I felt that I was struggling too much. However,

this program led me to keep pushing through. The largest risk I took during this program is
sh

leaving my position at my school. I left teaching full-time for the remainder of the school year in

February with no position to return to the following school year. This risk has shown me the

strength and courage I have to do whatever I set my mind to. I have also learned that my family

should come before work and as I leader I want to ensure that I make my colleagues feel the

same.

Ethical Perspectives

Ethics has always been something that has been in the back of my mind. I have learned

that fair does not mean equal. I have also learned that privacy is a major concern for students. In

addition, all choices made by teachers must be made with ethics in the background. Part of our

role as educators is to teach students what is right and what is wrong. This is the definition of

m

ethics. Choosing between right and wrong can change a leader’s role at the school. For instance,

co
eH w
choosing to allow students to use their phones in class when it is in the rules to not have a phone

o.
at school can become an ethical issue. If something were to happen while the students were on
rs e
ou urc
their phones, the teacher can then become responsible for what happened because they chose to

not follow the rules. I have seen this occur at my school before and the consequences removed

the teacher from their leadership of a club. I feel that being a leader requires you to review the
vi y re

circumstances surrounding an issue and determine the ethical choice.

Initiative

I have never wanted to be a leader necessarily. However, I have found throughout this

program that I am a natural leader. I have stepped up to offer my thoughts on a situation at the
is

school where I am currently substituting. I have also been able to discuss, in interviews, the
Th

qualities I find in myself to be leadership qualities. This has allowed me to show that I would like

to become a mentor teacher or even a teacher that other teachers can come to for advice or
sh

thoughts on a subject or situation. I have also found that I like the idea of being in control of

planning and budgeting field trips and other activities. Taking these steps to show my initiative in

leadership will allow me to move forward with my career.

Conclusion

This summer, I plan to improve on my leadership skills at my church within the youth

group. This will provide the opportunity for practice before returning to the classroom in the fall.

I would like to use what I have learned and the skills I have acquired to be a lifelong learner and

researcher to ensure that the students at my school have the best educational opportunities. This

program has provided a quality base on which I can build my leadership skills and my

educational knowledge.
