SIEVE SHAKER

Objective:
To determine the following by differential & cumulative analysis for a given
sample:
1. Specific surface area
2. Mass mean diameter
3. Volume surface mean diameter
4. Number of particles
5. Arithmetic Mean diameter
6. Volume Mean diameter

Equipment and Material:

Sieve Shaker, Weighing balance, Brick

Theory:

Sieves are used industrially on large scale for the separation of particles according to
their size, for the small scale production of closely ground material and for carrying
out size analysis. Generally woven wire cloth is used for the size analysis of very small
particles.

Some of the important definitions are given below:

Sphericity :It is expressed in terms of Φs = 6Vp /Dp Sp

Shape factor : It is expressed as and defined as surface constant/ volume constant.

Specific surface area :It is defined as surfaced area of particle per unit mass.

Arithmetic mean diameter: It is average diameter of mixed particles.

Mesh no.: It is the number of opening per linear inch.

Differential Analysis: Analysis tabulated to show the mass fraction in each size
increment as a function of average particle size in the increment.

Cumulative analysis: The individual increments are added starting with that which
contains smallest particles & the analysis is tabulated as the cumulative sums
against the maximum particle diameter in increment.

Experimental-Set Up

Procedure:
Take the feed sample and weigh it.
Arrange the sieves in order of the mesh no.
Place the sample on the top screen.
The stack is shaken mechanically for 20 minutes.
The particles retained on each screen are removed.
All the mass at each screen are weighed and noted down & masses of
each screen increment are converted to mass fraction

Data:
Weight of feed = gm.
Screening time = 20 minutes
Shape factor, a = 0.95
For rounded sand ᶲs = = 0.83
Particle density ρP = 1.5 gm/cm3
