II. INTRODUCTORY CONCEPT

Reading Comprehension is the ability to read, understand, process, and


recall what was just read. Children who struggle with reading can improve their
reading comprehension by using graphic organizers. With the use of graphic
organizers, it would be much easier for you to understand the story very well. These
simple, visual tools allow pupils to break down stories and non-fiction texts. They
can also aid the children to keep track of thought as they read.
There are several types of commonly used graphic organizers that you may
encounter. Some of these are Venn Diagram, Sun Gram, Story Map, Concept Map,
Rainbow Reading Map, and many more.
Once you become familiar with a certain type of organizer, you may find
yourself used of it that you have not even thought of.

Direction: Read the story below and answer the questions that follow.

A Day at the Park

It’s Saturday. The park is filled with kids playing along with their friends, other
siblings, or parents. Some are having a picnic under the old mango tree just a few
meters away from the gate.
Mrs. Reyes is preparing the picnic mat together with their eldest, Marie. While
Mr. Reyes arranged the grill and started grilling some barbecues. The twins, Oli and
Ali, joined their friends at the swings.
Suddenly, there was a loud cry and a commotion can be seen near the swings.
Marie decided to look and saw Oli crying while holding his elbow. He accidentally fell
from one of the swings while Ali is pushing it. Marie helped Oli get up and brought him
to their parents.

“You have to be careful next time,” said Mrs. Reyes while tending to Oli’s
wound. “It was a good thing that it’s only a scratch.”
“Yes, Mama,” answered Oli.
“And you have to watch over each other when we are not around. Okay, Ali?”
she said smiling to Ali.
“Yes, Mama,” answered Ali.
“Good. Okay. Go wash your hands and we will eat in a while.”
Ali took Oli’s hands and led him to the washing area in the park. She helped
him wash his hands and dries them with her handkerchief. Mrs. Reyes smiled. She is
happy to have such sweet children.

Grandpa’s Boat

Marianne spent a beautiful Saturday with her grandpa on his fishing boat. He
picked her up at her house very early in the morning. They stopped for breakfast on
the way to his favorite fishing spot, Lake Francisco.
Once they arrived at the lake, Grandpa put a worm on Marianne’s hook, then
showed her where to cast her line. While they waited for the fish to bite, Grandpa
told Marianne some stories about his childhood in Italy.
Suddenly, Marianne’s fishing pole bobbed down sharply. She quickly began
reeling in her catch as Grandpa reached for the net. A few moments later,

Marianne’s lifted the trout out of the water into the net. Grandpa was so proud of
Marianne that he took a picture of her holding her prize!
