The Prelude by William Wordsworth

passing through the fields in a serious mood. The poet

says that after this instance, his thoughts were filled with
a gloomy and surprising intuition that there are various
forms of existence he didn’t know anything about. The
poet says that his thoughts were enveloped with darkness
— it could be called solitude or empty abandonment.
He says that he could not picture the greens of the fields.
He says that he couldn’t picture powerful shapes of the
trees, the skies and nature but he could picture the giant

m
and powerful shapes. He says that people are alive, these
shapes are not alive. These shapes float in the poet’s
mind all day and at night, they give him terrible dreams.
The Prelude is an autobiographical poem by William

co
Wordsworth. The poem revolves around Wordsworth's
spiritual development.

The poet begins by describing an incident on a summer

night (indicates that the poet is guided by nature) when he
a.
sees a boat tied to a tree in a small bay. The poet says that
this is where the boat is usually found. He begins to
unchain the boat and push it forward into the lake. The
poet says that by doing so, he felt both pleased and
w
worried. The movement of his boat created a similar
sounding effect to that of the mountain’s echo. The poet’s
oars create circular ripples on both sides of the boat. The
r

ripples were gleaming with the light of the moon until

they dissolved to become one with the dazzling water. The
ka

poet says he was proud of his rowing abilities. He also

shares a trick he uses to row in a linear path till the desti-
nation arrives. He says he locks his sight on any one
mountain peak — which is the most distant point on the
horizon. The poet says that his boat was an elf’s boat. He

which is silent. He adds that with every stroke of rowing,

his boat would move forward through the lake just like a
swan did. The mountain peak which was once the highest
pi

peak in the horizon starts coming into the sight — it looks

black and giant. It seems like the second mountain which
has life in it, which could think, which is seemingly lifting
its head. The poet says that as he continues rowing, the
ar

mountain gets bigger and larger — it appears like a gigan-

tic fearsome figure which blocks out the stars for the poet.
The poet says that he still thinks that the mountain is alive
and has its own motives and just like living beings, has its
method of moving. The poet says that the mountain has
started to pursue him. He says that he is now shivering
and that the oars are beginning to shake. The poet says
that he turns around to bring the boat back at its dock -
the tree on the bay. He says that he parked the boat at the
dock, and after that he took a walk back home while
