THREE POSITIONS FOR AN OBJECT PRONOUN

1.- In a DIRECT OBJECT position

Have you met Marilyn? I’ve never met her
We checked English Grammar . I didn’t like it
2. In an INDIRECT OBJECT position
If you see Jim, give him my regards
Please, show me the results!
3. OBJECT OF PREPOSITION

Sorry but I didn’t vote for her

FIRST POSITION: OBJECT PRONOUNS USED IN A DIRECT OBJECT POSITION

When an object pronoun is the direct object of a verb (answer to questions What? Or Who?, and
IT IS INMEDIATELY AFTER A TRANSITIVE THE VERB since it is the object position

Subject + Verb + Direct Object (Object pronoun)

They need ME. We like YOU .

They understand HIM . I wanted her to help THEM.
We mended IT yesterday. I haven’t seen HER today.

Please, tell US what to do Please, call ME
We loved HER He loves ME
Good bye girls! I will call YOU later I love YOU! You love ME?

SECOND POSITION: OBJECT PRONOUNS USED IN AN INDIRECT OBJECT POSITION

Object pronouns can be indirect objects of a SENTENCE when we build up a sample :

Subject + verb + indirect object (object pronoun) + direct object

A man gave him the car. I showed them my birthday photos

I.O. D.O. I.O. D.O.

Sulma sent an e-mail to John. Sulma sent HIM an e-mail

READ, RENT, SEND, SHOW, TEACH, TELL, THROW, LEAVE, PAY,
EXPLAIN, INTRODUCE, SELL, CONFESS, DESCRIBE, SEE, CALL, LOVE

OBJECT PRONOUNS IS AFTER A PREPOSITION

Subject + verb + preposition + object pronoun

Please, give the book to me. We have heard a great deal about you.
I need to talk with him They went with him.
I bought a present for her. The cake was made by us.
Here is a letter from them. I have written to her

THE USE OF POSSESSIVE PRONOUNS

Subject Possessive Adjectives Possessive pronouns
pronouns MY + NOUN(S) VERB + MINE “S”
I It is MY money/job It is MINE
You It is YOUR money/friend It is YOURS
He It is HIS job/hands It is HIS
She It is HER money/friends It is HERS
It It is ITS money /job(s) ******
We It is OUR money/houses It is OURS

They It is THEIR money/room It is THEIRS

This is my/your/his/her My/Her/our favorite His/ my/ Our/ their

Saturday’s work actors American friends

 Possessive adjectives and possessive pronouns both show POSSESSION, BUT THEY ARE PLACED IN
A DIFFERENT PLACE IN YOUR SENTENCE

My bicycle is new.
Does your uncle play hockey?
His answer was correct.
Her father is not here.
The tree has lost two of its branches POSSESSIVE ADJECTIVES
He is our friend. + NOUN(S)
Their house is one block from the school.
Our English grammar students
English Grammar I Unit Three: The use of pronouns 16
Second Semester - 2020
M.Sc. Lic. Giovanna Barrero O.

 Before you begin studying possessive pronouns, it is important you have to emphasize its
exact POSITION in a sentence.
I mine This car belongs to me. It’s mine.
You yours Does this car belong to you? Is it yours?
He his This car belongs to him. It’s his.
She hers This car does not belong to her It isn’t hers.
This is mine. Hers is on the table
It (does not have possessive pronoun)
We ours This car belongs to us. It’s ours.
You ours Does this car belong to you two? Is it yours?
They theirs This car belongs to them. It is theirs.

 Possessive pronouns are often used to contrast two things

Sarah’s house is much larger than ours.
Her parents were in Malaya, and so were mine
Is that coffee yours or mine?
It was his fault, not theirs.
 We use the question word Whose to ask who something belongs to. There are (two ways to ask
the same question.
Whose car is this? Who does this car belong to?
Whose is this car? Who does this car belong to?
 Mine, ours, yours, theirs, hers don’t have a noun after, neither they are followed by THE
These books are mine, but this newspaper is yours.
I did not have an umbrella, so Ann gave me hers.
It is their problem, not ours. Is that their car? No, theirs is green

THE USE OF DOUBLE POSSESSIVE

It is easy to recognize them since they are formed by the use of a possessive pronoun followed by the
preposition OF.

 In English we say A FRIEND OF MINE, a friend OF HIS/HERS, some friends OF YOURS/ OF THEIRS/
OF OURS, for example:
I went out to meet a friend of mine
Are those people friend of yours
These are my children. These children are mine
These are my things. These are mine
 They answer the question WHOSE? .

4.- THE USE OF REFLEXIVE PRONOUNS

DEFINITION OF REFLEXIVE PRONOUNS

Reflexive pronouns are often used to the noun or pronoun that is the subject of the verb. That is why,
we use a reflexive pronoun when the subject of the sentence and the object are the same person that is
why we call them Reflexive pronouns. IN OTHER WORDS, REFLEXIVE PRONOUNS ARE WORDS THAT
REFER TO THE NOUN OR PRONOUN THAT IS THE SUBJECT OF THE VERB, for example:
Subjective

You Yourself
He Himself
She Herself

We Ourselves
You Yourselves

I looked myself in the mirror for a long time.

I washed myself thoroughly before putting on

clean clothes. Did you hurt yourself?

I burnt myself cooking the dinner

Be careful with the knife. You will cut yourself !!!

John was looking at himself in the mirror
Kate has hurt herself
Our cat washes itself after every meal
Bears like to rub themselves against a tree!
Have yourselves a good time!
Come in! Children and find yourselves a seat
Baby birds are too young to look after themselves
He bought himself a god watch!
Anny blamed herself for the accident
Julia had a great holiday. She really enjoyed herself
Do you talk to yourself sometimes?

LIST OF REFLEXIVE VERBS

 In English, there ARE NOT TOO MANY VEBRS which accept a reflexive pronoun. That is why, the
most common reflexive verbs are:
amuse oneself/ yourself give yourself (something)
be angry at oneself/yourself help yourself
be ashamed of oneself hurt yourself
be proud of oneself/ yourself introduce yourself
behave oneself/ yourself kill yourself
believe in oneself/yourself laugh at yourself
blame yourself Live by oneself
burn yourself look after yourself
control yourself make yourself (a cup of tea, etc.)
cut yourself pinch yourself
defend yourself promise yourself
dry yourself Take care of yourself
enjoy yourself talk to yourself
feel sorry for yourself teach yourself
feel proud oneself Tell yourself
find oneself/yourself wish yourself (luck)
work for yourself
English Grammar I Unit Three: The use of pronouns 21
Second Semester - 2020
M.Sc. Lic. Giovanna Barrero O.

ENGLISH VERBS THAT DO NOT ACCEPT A REFLEXIVE PRONOUN

 Note that the following verbs aren’t normally reflexive in English:

To change (your clothes) to dress to wake up
to go to bed to shave to wash
to stand up to sit down to lie down
to relax to rest to feel tired
to feel bored to concentrate to sleep
to make sick to go to put
to remove to dress

In Spanish we say ME COCINO……. ME HAGO COMIDA….. ME PLANCHO…… Is it correct???

I feel fine  NOT feel myself fine
I must try to relax  NOT …….. relax myself
I can’t concentrate  NOT …….. concentrate myself

THE USE OF REFLEXIVE PRONOUNS

 Reflexive pronouns are used as objects of a verb when the action of the verb returns to the doer,
i.e. when the subject and object area the same person.
I cut myself He shaved himself
It is not always easy to amuse oneself on holiday.
Tommy and Ann blamed themselves for the accident.
 The emphatic reflexive pronouns can immediately follow a noun or pronoun. In other words, when
you want to emphasize a personal pronoun you have to say
Personal pronouns + reflexive pronoun
Yes, I myself faxed the report to him
Yes, she herself saw what happened in the accident. The film itself was unbelievable
 The emphatic reflexive pronoun can also be placed at the end of a sentence.
I faxed the report to him myself. The building is all right. I think myself.
You can not do that yourself

 The expression by myself, by yourself means “alone” or “without help”

I don’t live by myself. I share a flat with two friends

I can’t move this table by myself. It is too heavy
 We sometimes use Reflexive pronouns, that means:
adjective + preposition + reflexive pronoun
be angry with yourself be pleased with yourself
be ashamed of herself be proud of himself
to be sorry for ourselves be responsible for yourself.
 We don’t normally use reflexive pronouns to talk about actions which people usually do to
themselves e.g. wash, shave, dress, put on , etc.
He washed, shaved and dress quickly NOT ……………….. washed himself
BUT we say dry/ myself or yourself
I got out of the bath and dried myself
 The use of a reflexive pronoun also expresses something reciprocal = each other.
Tommy and Ann blamed each other. They are looking at each other
Sue and I can take care of each other (= Sue can take care of me and I can take care of her)
 We can also say one another = each other
They are looking at each other = They are looking at one another
*** But note, people prefer to use each other for people or things and one another for more than two .
Below you have specifically this difference
Chris and Sue often help each other We should all try to help one another
English Grammar I Unit Three: The use of pronouns 22
Second Semester - 2020
M.Sc. Lic. Giovanna Barrero O.

5.- THE USE OF RECIPROCAL PRONOUNS

 They express a “two-way” relationship:

 each other is synonym of = one other.
 Compare –selves (e.g. themselves, ourselves) and EACH
OTHER/ONE ANOTHER
 Reflexive pronoun or EACH OTHER? Compare these
two sentences. They don’t mean the same
Look!

A) The old people in the village look after themselves. They are looking at themselves
B) They look after each other too/ they ‘re looking at each other
 We can use one another instead of each other, because they are synonyms:
They are looking at each other
 We can say each other/one another (but one another usually means we are talking about
more than two people. It is also more formal) :
We all help each other = We all help one another
 But note that some people prefer each other for two people or things, and one another for
more than two:
Chris and Sammy often help each other We should all try to help one another
