3. Snatch: grab
4. Reynard: a fox in old European stories, who often behaves badly but always escapes punishment
with his cleverness

I UNDERSTAND:

A. Fill in the blanks:

1. rich, ripe; purple-red.

2. high.

3. waste

4. mean; common

5. curled sigh

6. sour
B. Answer these questions:

1.Where did the fox find the grapes?

Ans: The fox found the grapes in a vine above his head, while trotting.

2. What did he try to do when he saw them?

Ans: The fox tried to snatch the grapes when he saw them.

3. Describe the grapes.

Ans: The grapes were rich, ripe, purple-red in colour and were hanging from a high vine.

4. Who was poor Reynard?

Ans: Reynard is a fox in old European stories, who often behaves badly but always escapes punishment
with his cleverness. The fox in this fable is referred to as poor Reynard.

5. What did the fox say when he could not reach?

Ans: When the fox could not reach the grapes, he said to himself, that he should not waste an hour after
the mean and common fruits and he was sure that they would taste sour

6. What, according to the poet, do we say when we cannot reach something?

Ans: According to the poet, when we cannot reach something, we say that ‘the grapes are sour.’

THINK AND REFLECT:

1.Do you think the grapes were really sour? Why do you think the fox called them ‘sour grapes’?

Ans: The grapes were rich and ripe. So they could not be sour. The fox called the grapes ‘sour’ because
he could not reach them and was trying to find an excuse to give up.

2. Did the fox try hard enough to get the grapes? Support your answer with references to the text.

Ans: The fox did not try hard enough to get the grapes. He made an excuse by trying to malign the
quality of the fruit and left the place without even trying for an hour.

3. What do you feel about the fox’s reaction to failure? Is it the correct way to respond to failure? How
are human reactions similar to those of the fox in face of failure?

Ans The fox must have been very upset and irritated following his failure. It is not the right way to
respond to a failure, rather he should have made himself more determined and should have tried harder
to succeed in further attempts. In many cases, human beings also feel disappointed after a failure and
give up trying further, just like the fox did. In that way, they destroy the possibility to win over the
situation.
