    1. In 1970, the BBC showed a series of programmes about the history of the British
    Empire. Before the series started, they advertised it. The advertisment mentioned
    ‘England’s history’. Within a few hours, the BBC had received thousands of
    angry calls of protest and it was forced to make an apology. Who do you think the
    angry callers were? Why did the BBC apologize?
    2. Bearing in mind its climate and general character, which part of Britain would
    you choose to live in? Why? Is it the same part that you would like to visit for a
    holiday? Why (not)?

    3. Does the capital city of your country stand in the same relation to the rest of the
    country as London does to Britain?

    4. Several factors can go towards creating a British person’s sense of identity. Some
    of these are more important, and some are less important. Are the same factors the
    important ones in your country?
    5. Would you advise the British to get rid of their monarchy? Why? Why not?
    6. How does the relationship between central and local government in Britain
    compare with that in your country?

    7. How do you explain the popularity of the different types of dwelling in Britain?

    8. Would you say that people in your country are more or less enthusiastic about
    university education than they are in Britain?

    9. In Britain, you are generally considered to be unfortunate if your birthday is in the


    last half of December. Why? What special days do you have in your country for
    individuals to celebrate which British people don’t celebrate?
