traumatic experience. It focus on individual mind that what is exists at unconscious mind or sub-

conscious. This therapy help out people to gain relief

 Psychoanalytic criticism:

Psychoanalytic criticism term was firstly used by an Australian neurologist Sigmund Freud. He

was the leading figure in psychoanalysis. The main focus of psychoanalytic criticism is on

personality of the author, and it examine the personality through life events, personal experience,

and literary works. He noted that in literary work there were some common features in that era

like Shakespeare and other writers shows same psychological struggles, while this is not allowed

in literature.
 Basic Ideas:

Psychoanalytic theory of personality suggests that human action is the result of the

interaction among the three level of mind; id, ego, super ego.

Structural theory of personality states that how conflicts among these level of mind give

shape to out behavior and personality. Which are unconscious.

Freud suggests that personality develops in childhood through five psychosexual stages.

During each stage of development, a child might face with conflict.

 Freud’s Models of the Mind

Freud says, language plays a major role in showing hidden expressions, desires, and feelings.

According to him language and unconscious mind are related to each other. Unconscious mind

consists of desires, sex drives, fear, dreams, etc. which may be not expressed in a direct way to

world. But according to Freud, hidden and unseen emotions can be express through language.

I. The Id

Id is based on primitive impulses i.e. hunger, thirst, anger etc. it is the unconscious part of the

mind. It works on pleasure principle

II. Super-Ego

It is related to the social and moral values of human. It differentiate between right and wrong.

III. Ego

Ego is based on reality principle. It is the conscious part of the mind. It maintain balance when

there is any conflicts between id and super-ego.

 Freud’s Three Level of Mind:

Freud suggest that human’s mind is consist of three level. Conscious, Subconscious, and

unconscious. Conscious mind is the first level of mind, which is smallest part, it is consist of
what we aware of in present time. Subconscious mind is hold information that are underneath of

awareness. Unconscious mind is made up desires, emotion, instincts that repressed deeply,

unconscious mind has great influence on our behaviors.

 The Role of Dreams in Freud’s Theory:

Dreams are considered more important in psychoanalysis. He claimed that dreams are a way out

to unconscious mind. Dreams are the repressed desires, emotion, and events, dreams are

fulfillment of that events which can’t fulfill directly. He asserted that dreams hold symbolic text

that needs to interpret.

 Defense Mechanism:

Freud suggested that all three level of mind are always in conflict, because each level has it’s

own goals, ego engages in some defense mechanism.

o Repression: Ego pushes disturbing and unpleasant thoughts out of one’s conscious mind.

o Denial: the ego blocks and ignores the reality of the situation and overwhelming experience

from awareness.

o Projection: the ego attributes unacceptable thoughts, and feeling to another person

o Displacement: it is the satisfying an impulse with another substitute object or person but not in

socially acceptable way

o Regression: it is a defense mechanism, in which individual move back in psychological time

when face with stress i.e. a stressed person acted like a child.

o Sublimation: this defense mechanism is the satisfying an impulse with a subtitle object but in a

socially acceptable way.
