Results Released
Results notices of the 2021 Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination
(HKDSE) will be issued tomorrow (21 July) by the Hong Kong Examinations and
Assessment Authority (HKEAA).
This year, a total of 43,294 school candidates and 6,682 private candidates sat the HKDSE.
94% of the candidates from 429 day schools have registered for two to three elective
subjects in addition to the four core subjects, namely Chinese Language, English Language,
Mathematics and Liberal Studies.
Prof Wei Xiang-dong, the Secretary General of the HKEAA, said, ‘The 2021 HKDSE is
challenging for candidates. Candidates not only had to face uncertainty during the pandemic;
their learning progress was also affected. A number of candidates even had to take the
examinations at the quarantine centre. Nevertheless, candidates responded positively and
showed perseverance. I am so proud of them. Once again, with the concerted efforts of
participating schools, examination personnel, candidates, the Education Bureau (EDB),
different government departments, as well as the HKEAA staff members, the HKDSE was
successfully conducted this year with zero infections.’
As regards the performance of the candidates, a total of 29,732 day school candidates
obtained level 2 or above in five subjects, including Chinese Language and English
Language. This represents 72.4% of day school candidates, which is 1.2% higher than that
of last year. These candidates are eligible to apply for local sub-degree programmes and
relevant civil service posts.
The percentage of day school candidates who have met the general entrance requirements
for local undergraduate degree programmes is 42.3%, which is comparable to last year.
These 17,786 day school candidates obtained level 3 or above in both Chinese Language
and English Language, and level 2 or above in Mathematics Compulsory Part and Liberal
Studies.
This year, 88.6% of day school candidates attained level 2 or above and 59.8% attained
level 3 or above in Chinese Language, representing increases of 1.9% and 1.5%
respectively, while 10.5% were awarded level 5 or above, which is similar to last year.
In English Language, 80.4% of day school candidates obtained level 2 or above, which is
comparable to last year. The respective percentages of day school candidates achieving
level 3 or above and level 5 or above are 54.2% and 9.6%, representing decreases of 0.8%
and 0.6% respectively as compared to last year.

In Mathematics Compulsory Part, 81.8% of day school candidates attained level 2 or above,
while 14.8% achieved level 5 or above, which are comparable to the results of last year.
The performance of candidates in Liberal Studies has improved across the board when
compared to last year, with 89.4% of day school candidates obtaining level 2 or above and
9.5% achieving level 5 or above, showing increases of 1.0% and 2.4% respectively.
In addition to the 24 Category A subjects, the HKDSE also offers 39 Category B Applied
Learning subjects and six Category C Other Language subjects this year.
Candidates who took Category B Applied Learning subjects (excluding Applied Learning
Chinese) achieved ‘Attained’ or above in 93.5% of the 3,115 subjects assessed, which is
comparable to that of last year. Among these subjects, 28.1% were awarded ‘Attained with
Distinction (I)’ or above, while 8.2% were awarded ‘Attained with Distinction (II).
A total of 442 candidates sat Category C Other Language subjects this year. These subjects
were examined using the Advanced Subsidiary (AS) level question papers from Cambridge
Assessment International Education. Results of the November 2020 series examinations
were released in mid-January 2021, with 92.3% and 57.5% of candidates attaining grade e
or above and grade a respectively.
In light of the constantly changing COVID-19 pandemic situation, a series of precautionary

measures were implemented in around 520 halls and over 740 classrooms that were used
as examination centres this year. More than 21,000 invigilator-sessions were organised for
the written and listening papers.
With the coordination and support of the EDB and various government departments, the
HKEAA conducted the HKDSE at the Penny’s Bay Quarantine Centre for the first time for
seven candidates who were undergoing mandatory quarantine, and also supported the
government’s priority compulsory testing arrangements for candidates living in ‘restricted
area’. For the 2021 HKDSE, the HKEAA received applications for assessed results from 133
candidates who were absent from the examinations due to illness and other reasons.
Special examination arrangements were made for 3,001 candidates with special educational
needs, which has decreased by around 5% from 2020, and a total of 355 special
examination centres were set up for these candidates.
This year, 12 assessment centres were set up throughout the territory and about 4,300
markers and about 400 marking assistants were appointed to mark approximately 680,000
answer scripts.
Arrangements for the release of results on 21 July
School candidates should collect their results notices according to the arrangement of
respective schools, while an online results enquiry service is available to evening school
candidates from 7:00am on 21 July.
Private candidates can check their results online from 7:00am on 21 July. Those who do not
receive their results notices by 21 July should contact the HKEAA on 3628 8860 or visit our
office located at 12/F, Southorn Centre, 130 Hennessy Road, Wan Chai between 8:30am
and 5:30pm on 22 July.
This year, the HKEAA will try out to release the HKDSE results via Short Message Service
(SMS) in addition to the results notices. The SMS showing individual candidates’ results will
be sent to those who have provided their SMS phone numbers to the HKEAA starting from
9:00am on 21 July.
Service hours of the Public Examinations Information Centre (PEIC) and the enquiry counter
in our Southorn Centre office will be extended on 21 July to provide support for candidates
and schools.

⚫ The general entrance requirements for local sub-degree programmes are five
subjects at level 2 or above (including Chinese Language and English Language) in the
HKDSE or equivalent.
⚫ The general entrance requirements for local undergraduate degree programmes of
local universities/tertiary institutions are level 3 or above in Chinese Language and
English Language, and level 2 or above in Mathematics Compulsory Part and Liberal
Studies. Apart from the four core subjects, institutions also set other admission
requirements.
