I – LEARNING COMPETENCY CODE WITH CODE

Relate the laws of motion to the bodies in uniform circular motion

(S8FE-Ib-18)

II – BACKROUND INFORMATION FOR THE LEARNERS

What happens to you when you seat over without chair? – you fall. How about
if you seat on a chair? – you don’t fall. Why? This is because the forces acting on
you are balanced. The force of gravity pulling you down against your chair is
balanced by the force of the chair pushing up against you.
This learning material helps you understand why you do not fall as you sit on
a chair, as you walk on a road or as you lean on a wall. In this learning material, you
will be performing activities and answering questions about the third law of motion.
The third Law of Motion, is known as the Law of Interaction which states that for
every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. Whenever one object exerts a
force on a second object, the second object exerts an equal and opposite force on
the first object. For example, you seat on a chair, the force you exert on the chair has
equal amount of the force exerted by the chair on you.
A Force is simply defined as a push or pull resulting from an interaction
between two objects. Whenever there is a force, there are two objects involved – the
object that pushes and the objects that pulls in different direction. While the direction
of the pushes ( or pulls) is opposite, the strength or magnitude is equal.
In the example given above, there are two forces resulting from this
interaction – a force exerted by you on the chair, and the force exerted by the chair
on you. These two forces are called action and reaction forces which is stated in the
Newton’s Third Law of motion.

III – GENERAL DIRECTION

Take your time to read and answer carefully all the activities provided on
this activity sheet. It is very important for you to always follow the given
instructions for
every activity to avoid incorrect responses. Write your answers in the provided
spaces on this activity sheet. You can use another sheet of paper or bond paper if
necessary.

IV – ACTIVITIES

Activity 1 – Fill in the Blanks!

A - Using the word box below, fill in the blanks to make to statement correct.

strength direction true True

Whenever one object exerts a force on a second object, the
second object exerts an equal and opposite force on the first
object.

1. The Newton’s third law of motion states that

______________________________________________________________
______________________________________________________________.
2. Action and reaction forces are equal in _____________________ and
opposite in 3.______________________.
4.Identify if the following sentence is true or false. In every action, the forces
always
Occur in pairs. _____________
5. Is the following sentence true or false? The third law of motion is also known as
law of interaction. _____________

B – Study each illustration and complete the table by writing the reaction force
for each illustration. Number one was already done for you.

ACTION REACTION
1. The floor pushes against
you.

When you walk, you push against the

floor.

2
1. A boy pushes on the wall

3.

2. A mug pushes against the table

4.

3. The car tires push against the

road
5.

3
4. When a girl stands, she pushes
against the floor.

Activity 2 – Action and Reaction Forces Are Reciprocal ( Opposite) on an

Object

Direction: Read and analyze the situations below which you usually do in your
life. Then answer what is asked in each situation. Number 1 was already done for
you.

1. You throw a ball against the wall.

What is the action force? The ball puts a force on the wall.
What is the reaction force? The wall puts a force on the ball so it bounces
off.

2. You put your science modules on top of the table.

What is the action force? __________________________________________

What is the reaction force? _________________________________________

3. Whenever you win in a chess game with your brother, you tap the shoulder of
your brother.
What is the action force? __________________________________________

What is the reaction force? _________________________________________

4. When you answer your module, you have to take your seat properly. What is
the action and reaction force involved in seating on a chair.

Action force: ____________________________________________________

Reaction force: __________________________________________________

4
Activity 3 – Picture Analysis

Direction: Study the illustration below and identify the objects interacting with each
other, action and reaction forces acting on each situation. Use the arrows as your
guide.

Situation # 1: Walking on a floor.

Object 1: __Foot_
Object 2: __Floor___
Action Force: ______The foot exerts downward force on the floor.
Reaction Force : The floor exerts upward force on the foot.

Situation # 2: A woman is covering her head with a book during Earthquake

Drill.

Object 1: _____________________________
Object 2: ________________________________
Action Force: ______________________________________________________________

5
Reaction Force _____________________________________________________________

Situation # 3: Hammering empty milk can

Object 1: _____________________________
Object 2: ________________________________
Action Force: ______________________________________________________________
Reaction Force _____________________________________________________________

Situation # 4: The boy kicks the ball

Object 1: _____________________________
Object 2: ________________________________
Action Force: ______________________________________________________________
Reaction Force _____________________________________________________________

A Force is defined as a 5) __________ or 6) _______________ resulting from an

interaction between two objects. Whenever there is a 7) ______________, there
are two objects involved – the object that 8) _______________ and the objects
that 9) ________________ in different direction.
These two forces are called 10) _______________ and

Activity 5 – Drawing and Labeling Action - Reaction Force

Direction: The example below shows the action – reaction pair by the arrows (
vectors), and the action – reaction was described in words. What you are going to do
is to draw another arrow ( vector) and state the reaction to the given action. Take
your time to study the example for your guide in answering pictures 1 and 2.

Example:

Action:
Finger touches nose

1.

Reaction: Action:

_______________________ Fist hits wall

2.

Reaction:
Action:

The boy pushes barbell

upward

V. REFLECTION

In this part of your activity, you are going to write the lesson that you have
learned by completing the statement below.

From this lesson, I have learned that….
