1 INSERT <STINGER>

2 RADIO TEACHER : A preceding definition of disaster stresses that two elements

3 are affected – life (whether human or animal) and property. The effects vary

4 – it maybe a minor damage (like broken windows and doors), major damage

5 like torn rooftops, collapsed walls), total destruction (like completely destroyed

6 houses and structures rendering them useless and inhabitable) and the worst of

7 all, death. What are the possible impacts of disaster in our daily life?

8 THEME MUSIC FADE IN . . . THEN FADE UNDER FOR

9 RADIO TEACHER : Its impacts may include loss of life, injury, disease and

10 other negative effects on human physical, mental, and social wellbeing, together

11 with damage to properties, destruction of assets, loss of services, social and

12 economic disruptions, and environmental degradation.

13 The damage caused by disaster cannot be measured. It also differs with the

14 kind of geographical location, climate, earth’s specific characteristics, and level of

15 vulnerability.

16 THEME MUSIC FADE IN . . . THEN FADE UNDER FOR

17 RADIO TEACHER : Let us discuss the risk and disaster risk. Risk has various

18 connotations within different disciplines. In general, risk is defined as

19 “the combination of the probability of an event and its negative consequences”

20 (UNISDR, 2009). The term risk is thus multidisciplinary and is used in a variety

21 of contexts.

1 THEME MUSIC FADE IN . . . THEN FADE UNDER FOR

2 RADIO TEACHER : The term disaster risk refers to the potential (not actual and

3 realized) disaster losses, in lives, health status, livelihoods, assets, and services

4 which could occur in a community or society over some specified future time

5 period.

6 THEME MUSIC FADE IN . . . THEN FADE UNDER FOR

7 RADIO TEACHER : Disaster risk is the product of the possible damage caused

8 by a hazard due to the vulnerability within a community. It should be noted that the

9 effect of a hazard (of a particular magnitude) would affect communities differently

10 (Von Kotze, 1999:35).

11 THEME MUSIC FADE IN . . . THEN FADE UNDER FOR

12 RADIO TEACHER : It can also be determined by the presence of three variables:

13 hazards (natural or anthropogenic); vulnerability to a hazard; and coping capacity

14 linked to the reduction, mitigation, and resilience to the vulnerability of a community.

15 THEME MUSIC FADE IN . . . THEN FADE UNDER FOR

16 RADIO TEACHER : Next is the classification of disasters. Disasters can be divided

17 into 2 large categories: the first one is Natural; is caused by natural forces, such as

18 earthquakes, typhoon, volcanic eruptions, hurricanes, fires, tornados, and extreme

19 temperatures. They can be classified as rapid onset disasters and those with

20 progressive onset, such as droughts that lead to famine. These events,

21 usually sudden, can have tremendous effects.

3 those in which major direct causes are identifiable intentional or non-intentional

4 human actions.

5 THEME MUSIC FADE IN . . . THEN FADE UNDER FOR

6 RADIO TEACHER : Man-Made is subdivided into three categories: Technological/

7 industrial disasters; Terrorism/Violence and Complex humanitarian emergencies.
