Introduction/Panimula:
Good day! Welcome to the learning activity of Grade 8. This week, you will learn on how to use
modal verbs, nouns and adverbs appropriately. It will help you a lot in the near future for it will improve
your grammatical and communication skills. Have fun and enjoy!

Objectives/Layunin:
At the end of the lesson, the learners are able to:
1. Identify proper usage of modal verbs, nouns and adverbs.
2. Reinforce the knowledge in modal verbs, nouns and adverbs to enhance grammar and communication
skills.
3. Make use of the modal verbs, nouns and adverbs appropriately in different situation.

Modal Verbs
In the sentences below, all the words that occur in the positions of may, might, can, can’t, could, will,
would and shall are modal verbs.
1. I may come to see you next week. (may expresses possibility)
2. She can play the piano. (can expresses physical ability)
3. I will gladly accompany you. (will expresses willingness)
4. We shall arrive in Tokyo on December 6. (shall expresses simple futurity)
5. All persons will report at 8:00 AM. (will expresses formal command)
6. Could you tell me the time, please? (could expresses polite request)
Modal Meaning Example
Can To express ability I can speak a little Russian.
Can To request permission Can I open the window?
May To express possibility I may be home late.
May To request permission May I sit down, please?
Must To express obligation I must go now.
Must To express strong belief She must be over 90 years old.
Should To give advice You should stop smoking.
Would To request or offer Would you like a cup of tea?
Would In if- sentences If I were you, I would say sorry.
Nouns
The traditional definition is, “the name of a person, place or things.” In addition, it can be inflected for the
plural and the possessive and can be put in certain positions in the sentences.

Observe the following examples:


1. She is rich; her relatives are poor. (Adjectives)
2. The rich do not understand the poor. (Nouns)
The types of nouns are proper noun, count noun, collective noun, abstract noun and common
nouns.

Adverbs
Adverbs are those ending in –ly, derived from adjectives. It is grouped into adverbs of manner, frequency
and adverbs of place and time.
Examples:
1. She dresses prettily.
2. He lives quietly.
3. We cheered happily.

Position of Adverbs
1. Adjective + Adverb pattern: The adverb ending in –ly generally comes before an adjective.
a. I read an amazingly interesting book.
b. He is an exceptionally brilliant man.
2. Linking verb + Adverb pattern: The adverb comes after a linking verb.
a. She is unusually tall.
b. This is terribly difficult.
3. Following direct object.
a. We consider the speech needlessly long.
b. I think the show unnecessarily expensive.

COHESIVE DEVICES are words or phrases that show the relationship between paragraphs or sections of
a text or speech. Cohesive devices are pronouns, transitional words, connectors and other linkers.
Examples are for example, in conclusion, however and moreover, and, also, equally, identically, but, in
contrast.
Examples:
1. Netflix has many movies and shows and it is only 9 dollars.
2. The christmas tree is natural but it is expensive.
