WHAT IS SOCIAL SCIENCE?

– As a discipline studies the society and the manner in which people behave and
influence the world around us.

– The uttermost goal of social science is to answer different questions and find
solutions to problems of the society to improve human condition despite cultural,
social and political differences.

CULTURAL DIVERSITY

 CULTURE – “that complex whole which encompasses beliefs, practices, values,


attitudes, laws, norms, artifacts, symbols, knowledge and everything that a
person learns and shares as a member of society.” (E.B. Tylor 1920[1871])
 It is defined as the custom beliefs, social forms, and traits that defines a
specific racial, religious groups or social group.
 It has two types:
 Material Culture – it is a type of culture that are created by human
person or is tangible. Examples are food, clothing, abd technology.
 Non-Material Culture – it is a type of culture that are being
learnedor observed by humans. Examples are religions, folk
behavior, customs and gestures.
 DIVERSITY – “the state of having people who are different races or who have
different cultures in a group or organization.”

“Cultural Diversity - It is a state wherein several individuals with varied


backgrounds and culture are present in an institution.”
SOCIAL DIFFERENCES

 Society – comes from the Latin word “socius” which means comrade, companion
or friend.
 Pertains to a group of individuals involved in a social interaction or sharing
the same geographical or social territory.
 SOCIAL STRATIFICATION – a term used to refer to the large divide between the
lower and upper classes in the hierarchical structure present in a society.
 In simplest term, the society is divided by their wealth, status, or power.

POLITICAL IDENTITIES

 Politics – comes from the Greek work “Politika” which means affairs of the cities.
 Refers to achieving and exercising position of governance over a human
community.
 The world is divided into different countries, wherein each countries has its own
political system to run its government.
 Government – the system by which a state or community is controlled so as to
put order.
 Every country in the world is ruled by a system of governance to rule its people
or constituents; and in the process people affiliates themselves and defined their
political identity as they relate to other peoples of the world from other countries.
