INTRODUCTION TO THE COURSE

Course Description

In this course, the topics will focus solely on a theory that explains the
existence of volcanoes and other geologic features.

Content Standard

The learners demonstrate an understanding of the relationship among the


locations of volcanoes, earthquake epicenters, and mountain ranges.

Performance Standards

The learners shall be able to: (1) demonstrate ways to ensure disaster
preparedness during earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanic eruptions; and (2)
suggests ways by which the learners can contribute to government efforts in
reducing damage due to earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanic eruptions.

Learning Outcomes

The learners should be able to:

(1) describe and relate the distribution of active volcanoes, earthquake


epicenters, and major mountain belts to Plate Tectonic Theory;
(2) describe the different types of plate boundaries;
(3) explain the different processes that occur along the plate boundaries;
(4) describe the possible causes of plate movement;
(5) enumerate the lines of evidence that support plate movement.

LESSON 1.

Distribution of Active Volcanoes,


Earthquake Epicenters and Major
Mountain Belts

INTRODUCTION
Philippines is considered as one of the popular tourist destinations in Asia. One of
the reasons is because our country is a house of many land features such as mountain range
and volcano. In your Science 7 you have learned our country’s location which is along the
Ring of Fire then, in Grade 8 you studied about earthquakes and finally in Science 9 you have
learned about the different types of volcanoes, types of volcanic eruptions and the energy
from volcanoes. In this module, we will discover how volcanoes, earthquake epicenters, and
mountain ranges are distributed in the world. We will find out in which area of the earth are
they usually located. This will lead to an appreciation of plate tectonics—a theory that binds
many geologic processes such as volcanism and earthquakes.

earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. Therefore, it is a must for us to prepare and ensure our safety
and survival when these disasters strike. As the saying goes,

For this activity, your goal is to help your family prepare for an impending emergency. Your

Types of Plate Boundaries


INTRODUCTION

In your previous lesson you have learned about the location of active volcanoes, mountain
ranges, and earthquake epicenter using world map, triangulation method and distance-time
graph. Precautionary measures of what to do before, during, and after an earthquake were
also demonstrated.

Identifying and describing the different types of plate boundaries will help you to understand
the occurrence of an earthquake and other geologic activities. In this lesson you will be able
to learn the different types of plate boundaries and their movements. At the end of the lesson
the learners will be able to enumerate and explain the different types of plate boundaries;
locate the different plate boundaries on earth using a world map; and describe and illustrate
the different types of plate boundaries using models.

Lithosphere is made up of several plates on which the continents and ocean floor rest. These
tectonic plates may move away, toward, or past one another. Plate boundaries are the edges
where two plates meet. Most geologic activities, including volcanoes, earthquakes, and
mountain building, take place at plate boundaries.

INTRODUCTION
In your previous lessons you have learned that the lithosphere is divided into several plates and
these plates are constantly and slowly moving relative to each other. Plates may be moving
towards each other (Convergent Plate Boundary), moving away from each other (Divergent Plate
Boundary), or sliding past one another (Transform Fault Boundary).

Different plate movements cause different processes to occur along plate boundaries.
Today you will learn the effects of these movements on the Earth’s surface.

Summary:

You have probably heard that heat rises. This simple phenomenon creates never ending
movements in our atmosphere, ocean and in the molten rock of the earth's mantle. In this
video, you will watch hot water RISES and it draws more water in behind it. Once it gets to
the surface, it moves to the sides and begins to cool. Cool water SINKS and this sets up
circular movements of water that you will see here in real time. This process is what known
as convection current. According to Helmenstine (2019), convection currents are flowing fluid
that is moving because there is a temperature or density difference within the material. This
is exactly what happens in Earth’s mantle.

Article 1

As a substance like water is heated, the less dense particles rise while denser particles
sink. Once the hot less dense particles cool down, they sink, and the other less dense particles
rise. This continuous process is called convection current. This is exactly what happens in the
Earth’s mantle. The hot, less dense rising material spreads out as it reaches the upper mantle
causing upward and sideward forces. These forces lift and split the lithosphere at divergent plate
boundaries. The hot magma flows out of the mantle and cools down to form the new ocean crust.
The downward movement of the convection current occurs along a convergent boundary where
the sinking force pulls the tectonic plate downward. The convection currents rotate very slowly,
as they move and drag the plates along. Because of convection current, the tectonic plates are
able to move slowly along the tectonic boundaries, pushing each other, sliding past each other
and drifting away from each other.

As an oceanic crust moves away from a divergent boundary, it becomes denser than the
newer oceanic crust. As the older seafloor sinks, the weight of the uplifted ridge pushes the
oceanic crust toward the trench at the subduction zone. This process is called ridge push.

Slab pull is the other possible process involved in the tectonic plate movement. The weight of the
subducting plate pulls the trailing slab into the subduction zone just like a tablecloth slipping off
the table and pulling items with it. Now that you understand what happens inside the Earth and
its effects on the Earth’s surface, you should be able to realize that the tectonic activities at the
surface just like volcanic eruptions and earthquakes are inevitable. You should view the Earth as
a dynamic planet and still the most fascinating planet for it offers you a home that no other planet
can. Since you can’t prevent these tectonic activities from happening, the following performance
task will enable you to contribute meaningfully in minimizing the damage that these phenomena
can bring.

In 1912, Alfred Wegener (pronounced as vey-guh-nuhr), a German


meteorologist, proposed a theory that about 200 million years ago, the
continents were once one large landmass. He called this landmass Pangaea, a
Greek word which means “All Earth.” This Pangaea started to break into two
smaller supercontinent called Laurasia and Gondwanaland during the Jurassic
Period. These smaller supercontinents broke into the continents and these
continents separated and drifted apart since then. Wegener searched for
evidences to support his claim. He noticed the fit of the edges of the continents
on the opposite sides of the South Atlantic. His evidence to the Continental Drift
Theory includes the distribution of fossils in different continents, rock features,
and ancient climates.

Technology (192-1950)- the SONAR (Sound Navigation and Ranging) system is a


device that bounces sound waves off underwater objects and then records the
echoes of these sound waves. It allowed scientist to map the mid-ocean ridges.
In the 1950s scientists used magnetometers to detect magnetic variations on
the ocean floor. Age acting rocks helped prove that mid-ocean ridges create new
sea floor.

Arthur Holmes (1929) was a British geologist. He suggested that thermal


convection currents in the mantle were the force moving the continents.
Ship Atlantis (1931-1966)- Atlantis was the first ship built specifically for
marine biology, geology, and oceanographic. The first Woods Hole
Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) research ship. The ship began working in
1931 and retired in 1966.

Hugo Benioff (1935) is an American seismologist. He is famous for his work on


deep focus earthquakes and how they are associated with subduction zones. He
was the first to propose that subduction zones cause deep focus earthquakes.

INTRODUCTION

In 1912, Alfred Wegener, a German meteorologist proposed a theory about 200 million years
ago; the continents were once large landmass which he called as Pangaea. This Pangaea
started to break into two supercontinents called Laurasia and Gondwanaland during the
Jurassic period and continued to break into continents and these continents separated and
drifted apart since then. In your previous lessons, you were able to explore the different
processes that occur along the plate boundaries. At this point, you will further explore the
variety of evidence that supports the claims that plate tectonics accounts for the distribution

Learning Task 5.1. Drifted Supercontinent (required)

Objectives:

● Tell the possible direction of motion of the continents as they directed as they
drifted away
● Draw fossils of plants and animals as evidences found in the present continents
that will help solve the puzzle in the fitting of the drifted continents
● Reconstruct and describe Pangaea
● Predict what will happen to the world as the continents continuously move

Materials:

● Photocopy of the seven continents


● World map
● Pair of scissors

Procedures:

1. Cut carefully the traces of the seven continents. Warning: Be careful in using
scissors.

2. Sketch the dominant species of plants and animals found in the continents
before and after drifting away from each other.

3. Put the cut-outs together.

Q1. What do the Glossopteris fossils tell us about the early positions of the continents?

Q2. If Glossopteris fossils were found in Antarctica, what was the climate in this continent
before?

Q3. If the climate and the position of a place are relative to each other, where then was
the initial location of Antarctica 250 million years ago?

Q4. What does the presence of Mesosaurus fossils tell us about the initial location and
positioning of South America, Africa, and Antarctica?

4.Make sure that you put fitting edges of the continents side by side to form the
supercontinent Pangaea.

Q5. What clues are useful in reconstructing Pangaea?

Q6. Which continents do you think were neighbours before?

Q7. Is there a possibility that the current location of the continent would be different 100
years from now?

Q8. Where do you think the Philippines located during the time that the Pangaea existed?
Research on how the Philippine islands emerged.

5. Compare Pangaea with the world map.

6. Now move one continent relative to its current location. Observe carefully the
direction of its motion as it assumes its current location and position. Record your
observation.

7. Do the same procedure to other continents. Record your observations.

Q9. If the continents continue to move, try to predict the Philippines’ location 100 million
years from now.

Learning Task 5.2. Split and Separate (required)

Objectives:

● Simulate and describe the seafloor spreading process.


● Realize the importance of the seafloor spreading process relative to the
Continental drift theory.

Materials:

● Board paper, bond paper, colored pencil, pair of scissors, ruler

Procedure:

1. Using colored paper, draw stripes across one sheet of bond paper parallel to the
short sides of the paper. The stripes vary in spacing and thickness.

2. Fold the bond paper in half lengthwise.

3. Write the word “Start” at the top of both halves of the paper. It should look like
the figure on the right.

4. Cut the bond paper in half along the dashed line to form strips.

5. Take the board paper and make three 11-cm long slits as indicated in the illustration.

6.The two slits near the edges of the bond paper should be both 11-cm from the center slit.

7. Put the two striped strips of paper together so that the “Start” labels touch one
another.

8. Insert the strips up through the center slit, then pull them toward the side slits.

9. Insert the ends of the strips into the side slits. Pull the ends of the strips as shown
in the figure below and watch what happens at the center slit.

10. Practice pulling the strips through the slits until you can make the stripes come up
and go down at the same time.

Q3. What is the role of the mid-ocean ridge in the movement of lithospheric plates?

Learning Task 5.2: Read the following paragraph. Determine whether these statements are
correct. Justify your answer if it is correct. If it is false, try to explain what makes the statements
wrong.

1. One of the first lines of evidence suggesting the existence of plate tectonics was the
discovery of very similar fossils in rock masses separated by vast distances and by ocean
expanses. It suggested that those land areas had in the past been connected.

2. The similarity of coastlines for different continents suggests that they may once have been
connected. But the fact that they were separated by sometimes thousands of miles suggested
continental drift or plate tectonics.

3. The magnetic North and South poles of the Earth correspond closely, although not exactly,
with the spin axis of the Earth. Although the mechanism of generation of the magnetic field,
called the geodynamo, is not fully understood, it is clear that it has something to do with the
rotation of the Earth and the presence of mobile materials with significant electrical conductivity
which can circulate.

4. Earthquakes don’t occur randomly across the world, but happen across limited belts which
also contain most of the world’s volcanoes. These belts mark the location of plate boundaries.
These areas are so active because the stress of 2 plates against each other and eventually
gives in the form of a volcano or earthquake. The largest belt of activity is the “Ring of Fire”
surrounding the Pacific Ocean which is home to 90% of all quakes.

5. As we travel farther and farther out from the spreading center the rocks get older and older,
and the magnetic orientation of the rock changes with the magnetic pole reversals.

circles that intersect or nearly intersect at a point. This intersection
is the epicenter.

Learning Task 3.1. Oceanic Crust vs. Continental Crust


This interactive simulator shows the two types of crust—oceanic and continental crust. On the
Crust tab, you will see three slabs of crust. The slab of crust in the left is an oceanic crust while the
slab of crust in the right is a continental crust. The slab of crust in the center is called My Crust.
Decide on what type of crust you want your crust to become by navigating the tools in app. If
your crust looked like the slab on the left then it is an oceanic crust and if it looked like the slab on
the right, then your crust is a continental crust.
