Key Words & Concepts

Sacred Scripture - the revered texts, or Holy Writ, of the world’s religions.
Scriptures comprise a large part of the literature of the world. They vary greatly in form, volume,
age, and degree of sacredness, but their common attribute is that their words are regarded by
the devout as sacred. Sacred words differ from ordinary words in that they are believed either to
possess and convey spiritual and magical powers or to be the means through which a divine
being or other sacred reality is revealed in phrases and sentences full of power and truth.
Fiat - In Latin, the word fiat means “let it be done.” Mary's fiat was an immediate acceptance of
and consent to God's will for her life: “May it be done to me.” Her yes was total and complete;
she held nothing of herself back from God

Engage!
We often hear parents claiming credit for the praises given to their children. When someone says that a
child is beautiful, the mother would immediately say Mana sa ina! When a is praised for his intelligence,
the father would say Mana sa ama! If comment is negative, some parents would say: Di nga naming
alam kung saan nag mana ang batang yan, ‘di naman kami ganyan. They sometimes forget that a child’s
personal views about himself/herself is very important.
The table below gives you the opportunity to describe your identity as a son/daughter. In the first column,
write your personality traits. It could be about your physical, emotional, intellectual, social, and spiritual
characteristics. In the second column, write the name of the person to whom you attribute those
characteristics.

Luke’s account of the Annunciation reveals some striking similar attitude of Jesus and
Mary such as strong faith in God and total obedience to Him. The Second Plenary Council of the
Philippines (PCP II) affirms this truth.

Reflection
MARY, MOTHER OF GOD

She heard the Word of God from the angel and she inquired into its meaning. Through faith, she
conceived the Son of God in her heart, and by the power of the Holy Spirit conceived Him in her body.
Possessed by the grace of God from the beginning of her life, she gave a definitive “Yes” to the Lord.
She submitted her whole self to God, believing His word, trusting His power and obeying His will. By
that act of faith, she committed herself in faith irrevocably to her Savior-Son and His mission for the
world’s salvation. Thus, she became His mother and the first of the Lord’s disciples.

Reflect and Share

1. How did Mary conceive Jesus?
2. What do you think are her shining virtues as Mother of God?
3. Do you think Jesus’ attitudes were influenced by Mary? Explain your answer. What do you
think are the virtues and characteristics of Jesus that He “inherited” from Mary?

Sources and Models of Faith
o Sources of Faith: Sacred Scripture, Tradition & Magisterium/Human Experience

SACRED SCRIPTURE I. Christ - The Unique Word of Sacred Scripture 101 In order to reveal himself to men, in the
condescension of his goodness God speaks to them in human words: "Indeed the words of God, expressed in the words of
men, are in every way like human language, just as the Word of the eternal Father, when he took on himself the flesh of
human weakness, became like men."63 102
Through all the words of Sacred Scripture, God speaks only one single Word, his one Utterance in whom he expresses
himself completely:64 You recall that one and the same Word of God extends throughout Scripture, that it is one and the
same Utterance that resounds in the mouths of all the sacred writers, since he who was in the beginning God with God has no
need of separate syllables; for he is not subject to time.65 103 For this reason, the Church has always venerated the
Scriptures as she venerates the Lord's Body. She never ceases to present to the
faithful the bread of life, taken from the one table of God's Word and Christ's Body.66 104 In Sacred Scripture, the Church
constantly finds her nourishment and her strength, for she welcomes it not as a human word, "but as what it really is, the word
of God".67 "In the sacred books, the Father who is in heaven comes lovingly to meet his children, and talks with them."68
TRADITION: Read the Scripture within "the living Tradition of the whole Church". According to a saying of the Fathers,
Sacred Scripture is written principally in the Church's heart rather than in documents and records, for the Church carries in her
Tradition the living memorial of God's Word, and it is the Holy Spirit who gives her the spiritual interpretation of the Scripture
(". . . according to the spiritual meaning which the Spirit grants to the Church"81). 114 3. Be attentive to the analogy of faith.82
By "analogy of faith" we mean the coherence of the truths of faith among themselves and within the whole plan of Revelation.
The senses of Scripture 115 According to an ancient tradition, one can distinguish between two senses of Scripture: the literal
and the spiritual, the latter being subdivided into the allegorical, moral and anagogical senses. the profound concordance
of the four senses guarantees all its richness to the living reading of Scripture in the Church. 116
The literal sense is the meaning conveyed by the words of Scripture and discovered by exegesis, following the rules of sound
interpretation: "All other senses of Sacred Scripture are based on the literal."83 117
The spiritual sense. Thanks to the unity of God's plan, not only the text of Scripture but also the realities and events about
which it speaks can be signs.
1. the allegorical sense. We can acquire a more profound understanding of events by recognizing their significance in Christ;
thus the crossing of the Red Sea is a sign or type of Christ's victory and also of Christian Baptism.84
2. the moral sense. the events reported in Scripture ought to lead us to act justly. As St. Paul says, they were written "for our
instruction".85
3. the anagogical sense (Greek: anagoge, "leading"). We can view realities and events in terms of their eternal significance,
leading us toward our true homeland: thus the Church on earth is a sign of the heavenly Jerusalem.86 118
A medieval couplet summarizes the significance of the four senses: The Letter speaks of deeds; Allegory to faith; The
Moral how to act; Analogy our destiny.87 119 "It is the task of exegetes to work, according to these rules, towards a better
understanding and explanation of the meaning of Sacred Scripture in order that their research may help the Church to form a
firmer judgement. For, of course, all that has been said about the manner of interpreting Scripture is ultimately subject to the
judgement of the Church which exercises the divinely conferred commission and ministry of watching over and interpreting the
Word of God."88 But I would not believe in the Gospel, had not the authority of the Catholic Church already moved me.89
II. The Relationship Between Tradition and Sacred Scripture One common source. . . 80 "Sacred Tradition and Sacred
Scripture, then, are bound closely together, and communicate one with the other. For both of them, flowing out from the same
divine well-spring, come together in some fashion to form one thing, and move towards the same goal."40
Each of them makes present and fruitful in the Church the mystery of Christ, who promised to remain with his own "always, to
the close of the age".41 . . . two distinct modes of transmission 81 "Sacred Scripture is the speech of God as it is put down in
writing under the breath of the Holy Spirit."42 "and [Holy] Tradition transmits in its entirety the Word of God which has been
entrusted to the apostles by Christ the Lord and the Holy Spirit. It transmits it to the successors of the apostles so that,
enlightened by the Spirit of truth, they may faithfully preserve, expound and spread it abroad by their preaching."43 82 As a
result the Church, to whom the transmission and interpretation of Revelation is entrusted, "does not derive her certainty about
all revealed truths from the holy Scriptures alone. Both Scripture and Tradition must be accepted and honored with equal
sentiments of devotion and reverence."44
MAGISTERIUM / HUMAN EXPERIENCE V. Sacred Scripture in the Life of the Church 131
"and such is the force and power of the Word of God that it can serve the Church as her support and vigor, and the children of
the Church as strength for their faith, food for the soul, and a pure and lasting fount of spiritual life."109 Hence "access to Sacred
Scripture ought to be open wide to the Christian faithful."110 132 "Therefore, the study of the sacred page should be the very
soul of sacred theology. the ministry of the Word, too - pastoral preaching, catechetics and all forms of Christian instruction,
among which the liturgical homily should hold pride of place - is healthily nourished and thrives in holiness through the Word of
Scripture."111 133 The Church "forcefully and specifically exhorts all the Christian faithful... to learn the surpassing knowledge
of Jesus Christ, by frequent reading of the divine Scriptures. Ignorance of the Scriptures is ignorance of Christ.112

Sources and Models of Faith

 Models of Faith: Mother Mary, Venerable Ignacia del Espitu Santo, and St. Joseph
>>>> Who is Mary?
 Mother of Jesus (Jn. 2:1-11)
 A peasant young Jewish woman who lived in Nazareth
 The daughter of St. Anne and St. Joachim who were devout Jews.
 Was the wife of Joseph.
 Mary in Scripture:
 Mary is called “Woman of Faith” because in and through all the trials of life, she never doubted God. She
trusted that God would be faithful to her.
 At the end of the Annunciation story, Mary uttered her Fiat, “I am the Lord’s Servant,” said Mary; “May it
happen to me as you have said.”… (Lk. 1:38).
 Because of Mary’s ‘yes,’ she also shared in the sufferings of her son beginning with her giving him birth in an
abandoned stable, then fleeing with her husband from the murderous threats of Herod, living as an immigrant in a
foreign country and, finally, accompanying Jesus through his passion and death.

 The Church also presents Mary to us as “Model Disciple” because she was totally open and responsive to God’s
Word;
 because she trusted God when it was not easy to do so. When nearly all of Jesus’ disciples had fled in fear, Mary
remained faithful to him all the way to Calvary.
 Mary, Mother of the Church:
 Just as the Israelites called Abraham “our Father in the Faith,” so does the Church call Mary “our Mother in
the Faith.”
 When Jesus was dying on the cross, he looked at John (the symbol of all disciples) and said: “This is your
Mother” (Jn. 19:27). At that moment, Jesus made Mary the spiritual Mother of all believers, the Mother of
the Church.
 In giving Mary to us as our spiritual Mother, Jesus is saying to us individually and as a Church: “Here is the model
disciple. If you want to learn how to hear and respond to my word, look at Mary. She will teach you and help
you to make yourself totally available to God. She will teach you fidelity, obedience, compassion and
prayerfulness.”
In his Apostolic Letter on the Rosary (Oct. 2002), the late Pope John Paul II shared with us his special love for the
rosary when he wrote:
“The Rosary has accompanied me in moments of joy and in moments of difficulty. To it I have entrusted any number of
concerns; in it I have always found comfort. The Rosary is my favorite prayer. It is marvelous in its simplicity and its
depths”(#2).
 The Rosary is a Christ-centered and biblically-based prayer to help us worship Christ and honor Mary. We say that
the Rosary is Christ-centered and biblically based because we meditate on events in the life of Jesus.

THE FOUR MARIAN DOCTRINES

1. Mary, the Mother of God-
• This doctrine asserts not that Mary is a “goddess,” but that her Son is truly God.
• Mary gives Jesus what any human mother gives her baby.
• Through her Jesus is truly man.
CFC #520
2. Blessed Virgin
• “God’s one purpose for Mary was to be the Mother of His Son. That was the divine goal. For that she was conceived,
born and lived. Her undivided heart and body were meant for God alone” (Fr. Al McBride).
• Only something good and beautiful could be offered up to God in sacrifice.
• Only with the eyes of faith can we begin to appreciate Mary’s perpetual virginity.

3. The Immaculate Conception

The Catechism states, “The most Blessed Virgin Mary was, from the first moment of her conception, by a singular
grace and privilege of Almighty God, and by virtue of the merits of Jesus Christ, Savior of the human race, preserved
immune from the stain of original sin.” (Pope Pius IX, 1854)
• The biblical support for this doctrine is found in Angel Gabriel’s greeting to Mary: “Hail, full of grace” (Lk 1:28). Mary
was not just graced like the rest of us. She was “full of grace,” i.e., she was totally free of sin and totally full of God.
• “In preserving Mary from original sin, God was choosing a perfect door for a perfect God to enter an imperfect world”
(Peter Kreeft).
• The Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception on Dec. 8th.

4. The Assumption
“Having completed the course of her earthly life, Mary was assumed body and soul to heavenly glory and exalted by
the Lord as Queen over all things, so that she might be more fully conformed to her Son, the Lord of lords and conqueror
of sin and death.” (Pope Pius XII in 1950)
The Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Assumption of Mary into heaven on Aug. 15th

>>> ST. JOSEPH

• St. Joseph truly is the silent figure of the New Testament.
• For instance, the Gospel does not record one spoken verse for St. Joseph.
• Nevertheless, what this great saint did in his life for God speaks volumes. To appreciate him and his role in
salvation, we need to glean the Gospels.
• St. Joseph was “of the house and lineage of David” (Luke 2:4). Because of this ancestry, St. Joseph is the linkage
between the old covenant made with Abraham and Moses, and the new, perfect, and everlasting covenant which will
be made through the blood of Jesus.
• He brings to a close the notion of the Patriarch’s promised land and King David’s established kingdom, and prepares
the way for Jesus, the Messiah, who will establish the new Kingdom of God and the new Promised Land– not a kingdom
of land, castles, and armies, but one that is within oneself of shared life with the Lord, lived now and fulfilled in Heaven.
• St. Matthew identifies Joseph was “an upright man.” The original text uses the word just or righteous, which better
reflects that he lived by God’s standard, keeping the commandments and emulating God’s love.
• St. Joseph first appears in the Gospel infancy narratives. While St. Luke’s Gospel focuses on the annunciation to
Mary, St. Matthew’s Gospel focuses on St. Joseph. Here St. Joseph was engaged to Mary when he discovered that
she was pregnant.
• Remember that in Jewish society, when a couple became formally engaged declaring their intent before two witnesses,
they were considered married as husband and wife. After one year usually, the groom went to the home of the bride
with great ceremony and brought her to his own home where they consummated the marriage and lived together as
husband and wife. (This tradition is the basis for the parable of the five foolish bridesmaids (Matthew 25)).
• Since St. Joseph did not yet know God’s plan but knew his wife was pregnant not by himself, the Gospel reads that he
“decided to divorce her quietly” (Matthew 1:19).
• According to the Torah laws, St. Joseph could have had Mary stoned to death for infidelity (cf. Deuteronomy 22). If St.
Joseph knew Mary was pregnant, did the town gossip circle also notice? One can only wonder what shame and hurt
he must have felt. How his heart must have been broken!
• Nevertheless, the Angel of the Lord appeared to St. Joseph in a dream, revealed to him that Mary had conceived by
the power of the Holy Spirit, and commanded that he take Mary as his wife and Jesus as his own Son. Without question
or hesitation, St. Joseph did as the angel commanded.
• Here again, we see the important role of Joseph: He is to take Jesus as his own Son and to name him, thereby giving
Him legal recognition and legal personhood.
• St. Joseph fulfilled his obligations courageously. Throughout the gospel he faithfully and unquestioningly obeyed the
commands of God: taking his family to the safety of Egypt to flee the wrath of King Herod; returning to Nazareth;
presenting his child in the Temple for circumcision and formal presentation; and traveling to Jerusalem to celebrate
Passover.
• He accepted the responsibility of his vocation– being the faithful spouse and father. He provided the best he could for
his family, whether that meant the stable in Bethlehem or the home in Nazareth.
• Although the Gospels recount hardly any information about the Holy Family’s life in Nazareth, they were people of
modest means: When St. Joseph and Mary present Jesus at the Temple, they offer two turtle doves as a sacrifice, an
exception made for poorer families who could not afford the usual offering of a lamb.
• To provide for his family, St. Joseph worked as a carpenter. The original word in the gospel is tekton which means
“craftsman” or “artisan,” thereby suggesting that he could well have been a builder of homes as well as a
carpenter. As a good Jewish father, St. Joseph passed this trade onto his Son, and indeed Jesus is known as “the
carpenter’s son” (Matthew 13:55) and “the carpenter” (Mark 6:3).
• Finally, Jesus must have loved and respected St. Joseph and Mary very much, for the Gospel reads, after the finding
in the Temple, Jesus returned to Nazareth and “was obedient to them” (Luke 2:51). In all, he selflessly set aside his
own needs for the good of his family.
• Tradition holds that St. Joseph died before Jesus began His public ministry. This belief is based on two points: First,
he never appeared during the public ministry while Mary did, like at the wedding feast at Cana; and second, from the
cross, Jesus entrusted the care of His mother to St. John the apostle, indicating she was a widow with no other children
to care for her.
• Tradition also holds that he died in the presence of Jesus and Mary. For this reason, St. Joseph is the patron saint of
a holy death. Although not defined by the Magisterium, St. Francis de Sales (d. 1622) believed that St. Joseph was
assumed body and soul into Heaven.
• Lastly, St. Joseph has been honored in our liturgy. Since the legalization of Christianity in A.D. 313, a Mass has been
offered in his honor, beginning in the East. Pope John XXIII on November 13, 1962 ordered St. Joseph’s name inserted
into the Roman Canon (Eucharistic Prayer I), a proper recognition for the Guardian of the Universal Church.
• Moreover, St. Joseph’s feast day of March 19 is a solemnity and traditionally a holy day of obligation throughout the
universal Church (Code Canon Law, #1246); however, the United States was granted an exemption from the
requirement at the request of the Third Plenary Council of Baltimore (1884) because of the difficulty of observing holy
days in a non-Catholic environment.
• In 1955, Pope Pius XII established the Feast of St. Joseph the Worker on May 1 to present St. Joseph as the exemplar
of all working men and to focus on the true dignity of human labor in contrast to the “May Day” celebrations of communist
countries.

Elaborate!
INTEGRATION:
a. Ignacian Core/Related Value: Faith - Strong Faith in God
Question: As Christians, why do we need to go back to where we have been started?

b. Social Orientation: Social Media and Mass Media

Question: How can we use social media to spread/raise awareness on the importance of the sacred
scriptures and tradition to our life as Christians?

c. Lesson Across Discipline: History

Question: How do early Christians profess their faith to God?

Evaluate!
Task’s Overview: Is there a hope for our country and our people? This question brings us face-to-
face with the unfortunate events in our lives as a people. Our country is endowed by God with rich of
natural resources yet majority of our people are poor. We have among us great men and women who
are recognized internationally for their brilliant minds and great talents, yet we seem to be at a loss
that is why we cannot move forward. We claim to be a Christian nation, yet there is oppression,
exploitation, and violence around us.
Is there a reason for us to hope for a better life? If we will look closely at the life of Israel during the
exile, we will find the answer to this question.
Task #1: Prophetic Hope

Prophetic hope is first of all grounded on the memory of God’s great saving acts in the past. Thus
grounded, hope works against the rootlessness with which modern secularism plagues us all.
Second, prophetic hope looks essentially also o the future and to prosperity. It thus helps us to
overcome our excessive individualism. Third, in freeing us guilt of sin, the prophets’ promise of God’s
forgiveness brings comfort. Fourth, the prophetic hope sketches a new life that drives our resignation
and despair. Lastly, the prophetic hope burst out all narrow pragmatic, utilitarian views by offering a
vision of the future that only God can create.
---- cf. CFC 437-439

Task’s Overview: When Jesus calls, “follow Me and I will make you fishers of men,” no privilege to
great as to be called by name to follow Jesus. Jesus is generous to all who follow Him without reserve.
But Jesus’ generosity demands a response. There is no indication that the first disciples ever went
back home after Jesus had called them. It is sign that when Jesus calls, he also takes responsibility
for these whom he calls and will see to their needs, material, emotional, and spiritual. A vocation from
Jesus is therefore a lifetime calling, with no need to turn back again for life support.
