    CONDITIONALS

    FORM USE EXAMPLE


    Zero Conditional  facts, general truths If a plant gets enough light, it
    If/when + present simple grows.
    › present simple  to say what always happens in If/ when it rains, we don’t go out.
    a particular situation
    First Conditional  to refer to a probable/ If we leave now, we’ll miss the
    If + present simple ›will/ can/ possible future result traffic.
    could/ may/ might + verb If she finds out the truth, she
    might be angry.
    If + present simple › imperative  command If you get home before me, turn
    off the alarm, please!

    Second Conditional  hypothetical situations If we lived on a Greek island, we’d


    If + past simple › would/ could/ (present) have a healthier lifestyle.
    might + verb  unlikely situations in the Thomas would invest in solar power
    future if he had the money.
     advice If I were you, I’d walk to work
    every day.
    Third Conditional  hypothetical situations about If we had arrived earlier, we would
    If + past perfect simple › would/ the past/ what did not happen have had time for a shower.
    could/ might have + past participle in the past If we had driven here, we could
    have picked up Julie on the way.

    N.B. Note the difference between English and Romanian:

    Type 1:

    Dacă vei alerga, vei prinde trenul. = If you run, you will catch the train.

    Type 2:

    Dacă aș ști adevărul, ți l-aș spune. = If I knew the truth, I would tell it to you.

    Dacă n-ar ploua, am merge la plimbare. = If it weren’t raining, we would go for a walk.

    Type 3:

    Dacă ambulanța ar fi ajuns la timp, medicii i-ar fi salvat/ putut salva viața. = If the ambulance had arrived on time,
    the doctors would/ could have saved his life.
