EDUCATION PORTAL
An education portal is a specially designed website that provides a host of educational services.
The term portal was historically used to describe a port or location of multiple loading and
offloading activities. It is now used most widely to describe a multi-function website that
includes public and private sections, data retrieval and submissions tools, personalized content,
and often links or connections to education related systems or services.

The ability to provide personalized, user-specific content is central to the core functionality of an
education portal. The technology required to support this type of website structure became widely
available in the mid 1990s, with the advent of user management functionality as part of a web
server.

A public website typically provides a range of general information about the school, programs,
course, history, and admissions. Users are encouraged to refer to the website instead of contacting
the school directly for general information. The content manager is responsible for reviewing and
publishing content that is accurate, relevant, and easy to locate.

• The ability to provide personalized, user-specific content is central to the core functionality of
an educationportal. The technology required to support this type of website structure became
widely available in the mid 1990s, with the advent of user management functionality as part of a
web server.

• Some school district portals showcase exceptional teachers and describe current education
reform. Some community portals provide extra information, specific to a targeted audience, that
is only accessed via a password.

Higher Education Portal

• The education offered by a distance education university should also be considered high
quality by business or trade groups who would potentially hire new graduates in a given
field.

• There are four ways to get an open source education: online resources, training classes,
seminars, and self instruction.

Teacher Education Portal

• Continuing education courses, seminars, and professional development activities are all
considered part of ongoing teacher training. A teacher must complete some sort of
teachereducation before becoming a full-time teacher.

• One of the most common forums of this type is found in the field of education. Teachers
in public and private school systems may participate in a teachereducation forum as a
means of conferring with their peers on a variety of issues.

Online Education Portal

• The ability to provide personalized, user-specific content is central to the core

functionality of an educationportal. The technology required to support this type of
website structure became widely available in the mid 1990s, with the advent of user
management functionality as part of a web server.

• A company, school or training center that offers online training may implement an e-
learning portal to make course materials and assignments available to students and
instructors and to provide a place for interaction.

An Education Portal: Bridging the Gap among Students,

Educators, Parents and Administration.
An Education Portal has been developed to address the needs of the educational community
and foster the adoption of Information Society Technologies. It provides various online
community facilities and access to educational resources for supporting collaboration,
assistive learning and teaching practices.

This effort addresses a crucial educational challenge, which is to maximize access to the
information resources required to improve existing teaching, learning and research practices in
education, and aims to establish a technologically aware society.

In particular, the Education Portal is aimed to:

• Bridge the gap among students, educators, parents and administration, in order to increase
interactivity and communication and to facilitate collaborative work and research.
• Enhance students’ awareness and exploration of educational resources available in the
Web, and thereby create opportunities for the students to increase their learning potential
• Increase the use of the Web by students and teachers and thereby foster further adoption
of Information Society ideals within the educational community.

The Education Portal provides to its users the following tools and services:

• Digital Library
Through the Digital Library of the portal, users may gain access to various educational
resources as well as to information on the legal framework underlying primary and
secondary education .
• Special Interest Forums
A number of online communities of special interest can be established through the portal’s
forum facilities as a means for collaboration and communication among the portal
users.The portal provides the ability to certain groups of users to participate in private
exchanges of ideas, opinions and experiences.
• Announcements board
This facility allows wide dissemination of latest news and information on educational
topics, as well as access to the archives of all past announcements.
• Advanced search facilities
Users can use various search facilities (eg keyword-based, parameter-based) to retrieve
information regarding all the available portal content (digital library resources, posted
messages, announcements, etc).
• Administration tools

Education Web Portals

Portals are super-station doors to the Web that have been created from information indexes
and search engines or by a dedicated web master. They provide a large variety of integrated
resources, tools and services through a single location.

The main task of a web portal is to unify content and services into one area easy
access. There is no unique definition of a web portal as yet. However, based on some existing
approaches in defining web portals.

Three salient characteristics of web portals are:

· Gateway to information
· Usercentric and community based
· Multiple services

Based on these characteristics, a web portal may be defined as a gateway to searchable and
personalized information on the web, which also functions as a communication centre for its
target users. Additionally, a web portal provides personal and content related services to support
the community it serves.

There are three types of education web portals :

▪ Networking Education Portal

This portal provides users a point of access to various educational tools

and facilities. It functions as a center of communication for the different types of users, thus
forming a network among them.

▪ Organizational Education Portal

This portal is constructed for organizations whose core business is to

deliver educational material. It contains background information about the organization, its
philosophy, fund providers and members of the staff. Projects and research areas of the
organization are also highlighted. Examples of such portals are university or campus portals.

▪ Resource based Education Portals

A resource based portal provides access to various educational
