    The Syllable Types

    The sound a vowel makes often depends upon what type of syllable it is in.
    Here are the syllable types:

    Closed Syllables (the most frequent syllable type)


    Closed syllables have one vowel, followed by one or more consonants. The vowel
    has a short sound.
    Examples: in, on, cat, him, pot

    Open Syllables
    An open syllable ends in vowel
    1. Absoluteley open syllable – graphically and phonetically ends in a vowel.
    Examples: Me, so, I, fly, she, flu

    2. Conditionally open syllable - it is graphically open, and phonetically closed


    In this syllable type, there is a vowel followed by a consonant and silent e.

    Examples: Pete [pi: t], note, hate, grape

    R-Controlled Syllables
    1. Vowel+r
    In r-controlled syllable types, a vowel is followed by the letter r.
    Examples: car, bar

    2. Vowel+r+vowel
    Examples: care, bare

    1. The First Type (Alphabetic Type)


    This type is open syllables. All vowels are long.
