CONCLUSION
Introduction
This is the ultimate teacher's guide, with the information that you need in
order to help Google Classroom enhance your teaching in the traditional
classroom. There is so much that you can do with the help of Google
Classroom to get the results that you would like.
Teachers have the opportunity to track each student's progress in an
assignment, where they can comment and edit. The instructor will rate the
turned-in assignments, and return them with feedback to encourage the student
to update the assignment and return it. When marked, the teacher can only edit
assignments until the instructor hands the assignment back in.
Teachers can post advertisements to the class Stream, and students can
comment on them; this enables two-way communication between the teacher
and the students. Students can still post to the class Stream, but a teacher's
announcement would not be as high as a priority, and can be moderated.
Chapter 1: Getting to Know Google Classroom
What is Google Classroom?
Thanks to all of the advances in technology that have occurred in the past few
decades, there are now many different ways that you can work with your
students to create a great learning environment. You are not stuck with a one-
size-fits-all solution for classroom management. You can add in some other
good things like links, documents, videos, and more, that you may not have
had access to in the past. Some of these options will help you save time in
the classroom, while still provide your students with a personalized learning
approach that cannot be found anywhere else.
Think of how much time it takes: to hand out an assignment; to repeat
instructions, hoping you get all of the assignments back; to hear excuses about
why it is late; to correct all assignments; and then, move on to the next topic.
This is all going to take up a lot of your time; plus, you are going to miss out
on providing students with individualized attention, or a good explanation of
why they got certain things wrong. There just is not enough time to get all of
this done in a traditional classroom. Some students are going to end up
falling behind, because they just do not understand what is going on.
Thanks to all of the great technology that is in the world around us, you can
solve many of these issues. You can use emails to correspond with students
and explain what they did wrong in their assignments, even if they are too shy
to discuss this in the class. You can keep the instructions and all of the
assignments online, so no one is able to lose them; they can look up the
instructions and ask questions all at the same time. You can make it so that the
system grades the papers for you instantly, to save even more time.
What Google Classroom Does
One of the first questions that you may have about Google Classroom is what
this platform is going to be able to do. There are quite a few different
platforms that are similar to this one, so you may be curious as to how this
one is going to be the best option for you, compared to alternatives. You are
going to get some of the great features that come with Google, which you are
already familiar with; this is one of the main benefits that you will see when
working with Google Classroom.
Luckily, there are quite a few different things that you can work with in
Google Classroom. Some of the things that Google Classroom will be able to
help you do are discussed below.
You can use Gmail at school. As a teacher, you will be able to create your
own Gmail account. From there, you can search for any important messages,
that may be school-related. You will not have to worry about the ads or any
other delays that are common with some of the other email services. Many
people are familiar with Gmail, so you will be happy to use this more often.
As a teacher, you will find that working with Google Classroom is going to
help you to streamline your class. You will be able to do this by creating
your assignments; being able to share your assignments and announcements
with ease; and grading assignments without wasting a lot of time.
It is easy for both the teachers and the students to work together through
Google Docs. You will be able to create as well as edit various
presentations, documents, and spreadsheets, inside your browser. In addition,
you will be able to do all of this while making sure that all of the changes are
saved automatically. It is also possible for more than one person to work on
something at the same time, without having any issues.
Your students will be able to share their work, as well as save their work, all
on the cloud. This makes it easier for them to access the files whenever they
want, even if they are not at home. This can be helpful for you as the teacher
as well, because you can upload information to the cloud as well, for your
students to get ahold of it. This helps save some of the hassle and the time
that is expensed in sending attachments or merging together different versions
of the same document.
The Google Calendar is a great option to use with the Google Classroom.
Calendars can be shared. This makes it easier to plan for projects, and you
can also integrate it together with your Hangouts, Contacts, Google Drive,
and email accounts.
As the teacher, you are going to find that using Google Calendars can be
great. You can put up an announcement or assignment, and give it a due date.
Then, this due date and assignment will show up on the class page, for all of
the students that are linked to this classroom to see. You will not have to
constantly update students about when a due date is about to come. They just
need to take a look at their own Calendar to find out this information.
If you feel that you need to set up a website that you can use for your class,
Google Classroom will help out. This is something that you could do for a
specific project or event; you can set it up so that the students are able to
create some of their own websites as well.
If it is needed, you can conduct meetings that are face-to-face with the help of
video calls to your students. This can be really efficient if a student has a
quick question that they would like to have answered. Some teachers have
been able to use this service in order to create their own virtual field trips.
Sometimes the chats and the emails can be all over the place, such that there
are too many of them. The teacher is able to archive emails and chats, so that
they can go through them at a later time if they would like. It is also really
easy to organize your emails and chats, so it is easier for you to use.
It is possible to use some of the different add-on apps, that you need to make
more things happen within the class. You could use Google+ , Blogger, and
Google Groups to make the class a bit more productive than a traditional
classroom.
These are just a few of the things that you are able to do when working
within Google Classroom. As the teacher, you are able to pick out the things
that you want to do inside the classroom, and each class is going to be a little
bit different. It is completely fine to mix and match things together, to
customize the class that you are teaching.
Benefits of Google Classroom for Everyone!
Less Paperwork!
This is a benefit for everyone. Do you as a teacher tend to have worksheets
that students may come to you with, days later, only to tell you that they lost
it? Or maybe you need a new roll book for attendance? Or maybe you have
this worksheet that you have found, but do not want to waste valuable class
time trying to copy it? Or maybe you just do not want to deal with papers
upon papers? If you are sick of it, then Google Classroom is for you.
Allows the Use of Online Learning Platforms
One nice thing about Google Classroom is that it is so easy. For many
students, when they get to college, they may be confused by the idea of
degree-work online. However, online classes are super popular, so if you
want to get them ahead of the game, you should expose them to online-only
education. Google Classroom is a great way to do this, because it is super
easy for everyone, and most students love it, since everything is there.
Gets Better Conversations Going
Sometimes, it is very awkward trying to ask questions, and students are
either too nervous to speak, or maybe they do not want to (or they often are
stunted on deepening the conversation). Did you know that you could get
more engagement from students in a better way through the use of Google
Classroom? Just posting a question in the questions area will get students to
comment.
Easy Support
One thing that is great about this, is that if you are a teacher or an
administrator, and do not know how to use this, you can get the help that you
need. With G suite, you will be able to use Google Classroom easily with
their helpful how-to software, set permissions, and support at all times of the
day. You can use this software, and protect the data and classes.
Cannot Lose Work Anymore
If you are a teacher, chances are you have had to deal with the lost work
excuses. Students lose work when it is on paper, or it involves a physical
object. But, did you know that this system actually eliminates the chances of
you losing it. Since Google Classroom eliminates the consumption of paper,
so long as you have got access to the internet, you will be okay. Ultimately, it
will actually save your district a ton of money spent on paper. It is quite nice,
and it does the job.
Apps Galore
Google Classroom functions well on a mobile device, which means that you
can take this on the go as well. Lots of times, students will make the excuse
that they were not on the computer to have seen the assignment. Now, if you
have a phone, you download the app, and you get announcements and various
assignments that are posted, so you can stay on top of these. Teachers as well
can post any of the assignments that they need in real-time, through the app.
They can share support with this; it is super convenient, and makes their life
as a teacher that much easier.
Ease of Workflow
The nice thing about this, is that with the interface, you can add on some
products that sync with Google Classroom. You can install extra add-ons and
apps within this, so that you have got a full-on classroom environment. You
can track the trends, users, and students; administrators of the Google
Classroom platform will give students and teachers a better platform over
time. Plus, this is always updated, so you will have the support that you need.
Real-time Feedback
One thing that is e about excellent this platform, is the fact that teachers can
give feedback right away. With each assignment uploaded, the teacher can go
through submissions, make notes, and then give the students feedback that
they want. They can reach out immediately if the student is struggling, and
work with them as needed.
Can Upload Resources
If you have students that need extra copies, you, as a teacher, do not need to
worry about that. What you do, is upload the forms for assignments straight
into Google Classroom, and from there, the students can take control over
this. If a student misses an assignment, tell them it is in Google Classroom;
from there, you can have students check that whenever possible. It is quite
simple.
Saves You SO Much Money
Google Classroom is the future, and you will be able to easily, and without
fail, really make it better for every student. You do not have to worry about
students falling behind, but instead, you will be able to create a better
learning environment that will make everything better.
Easy to Access
Even if you or your students are not a frequent Google user, it is still easy to
work with the Google Classroom. Since this platform is delivered with the
help of the Chrome browser—which already makes it really accessible from
all tablets, phones, and computers—it is easy for the teacher to add in as
many students, as they would like.
Effective for Sharing and Communication
One of the biggest advantages that you will find with Google Classroom is
the ability to use Google Docs. These are documents that can be saved online
while also being shared with as many people as you would like.
Speeds Up the Process of Assignments
Google Classroom makes it possible to create a new assignment, and then
distribute it to all of the students in a classroom with just one click. Then
students are able to work on the assignment, and then turn it in almost
instantly, based on how long it takes them to complete it. This really
streamlines the whole assignment process; as the teacher, you will be able to
easily check who has submitted the assignment, who is working on it, and
more. The teacher can also take a look at the assignment and provide
feedback right away.
Effective Feedback
In a traditional classroom, it is really hard to provide all of the students with
the feedback they need. All of the students could be asking questions at the
same time, or you may not have the minutes needed to do it in class. You can
use Google Classroom to provide the right online support to your students
immediately. This helps the feedback to be effective, because it will include
some of your recent comments. Your students are able to ask questions and
get things clarified, if needed.
Saves on Paper
Instead of having to print a lot of different papers for the assignments, and
then having to grade all of these, you can put everything on Google
Classroom. This not only speeds up the process a little bit, but it helps to
save you a lot of paper that you may use otherwise. It helps you to save time
and paper, because you no longer need to worry about printing the
assignments that you need to use, or even handing them out. Gone are the days
when your students will be able to lose all of their homework and
consequently, you need to print more. It is all online now.
Easy to Use Interface
If you have used any of the Google products in the past, you are probably
used to seeing the clean layout that is pretty common with any of the other
Google platforms. Google Classroom stays pretty loyal to this. The
environment that is found in Google Classroom is full of simple, user-
friendly, and intuitive design details. For teachers, as well as students, who
are familiar with using Google or any of its other services, Google
Classroom is going to feel very familiar and easy to use.
Commenting System
Inside of Google Classroom, your students can comment right at a specific
location (such as within the pictures) for some of their online courses, so you
will not have to search around to find what they mean. In addition, you can
create a URL for interesting comments, and then use these for some of your
further online discussions, if you would like.
Everyone Can Use It
Teachers are able to use Google Classroom not just with their students, but
with other teachers inside the same institution. Educators would end up
joining this as learners; then the Google Classroom could be used for
information sharing, personal development, and faculty meetings. If your
educational institution wants to work in this manner, it is possible to do; you
just need to get the link to sign up in this manner. This is a great way for
educators throughout the same system, to share ideas, get together, and learn
how to better their profession all at the same time.
Chapter 2: How to Create A Class and Organize It
Creating a Class
If you are a teacher, the first thing to do after signing into your Google
Classroom account is to create a class. It is within the class that you work for
students and pass announcements to them.
This can be done by the steps, given below.

On the home page of your Google Classroom account, click the + icon for
Create or join a class . Choose Create Class .

A window will pop up, asking you to confirm that you agree to the terms and
conditions. Click the checkbox to activate it, and click Continue .
You will be taken to another window, where you will have to enter the class
details. The class name is mandatory; the rest are optional. Enter the class
name.
In the Section field, you can enter a short description of the class, the grade
level and the class time.
To enter the subject for the class, click inside the Subject field, and enter it
there. You can also select from the options provided as you type. This field is
also optional.
The location of the class can be entered in the Room field. Just click inside
the field, and enter the place where you will be holding the class.

Once you have filled all the details, click the CREATE button to create the
class.
All new classes come with a Classwork page, but you are allowed to
remove this. Even after removing it, the class teacher is allowed to add it
back.
Setting Up the Classroom
Setting up your classroom is easier than you think. While a lot of other
learning platforms ask you to jump through hoops and learn a lot of different
tabs before getting to use the system, Google Classroom tries to keep it
simple. Some of the things that you need to do to start with Classroom are
explained next.
Visit classroom.google.com . You will be able to sign up for an account,
using your school email address. If your school administrator has some
special rules about which emails to use, you will need to talk to them.

Click the + that is located on the right on top of the page. This allows you to
create the first class. Click Create Class .
Name the class such that it is easy to remember. Consider not only the name
of the class but also the section. This is important if you are teaching more
than one section of the same class. You can name it something like ‘Senior
English: Period 2’. Name the class as you want; just think about how you
will recognize them later.
Now that the class is created, your students can join it. You can send the link
to the students in your class to ensure they get into the right section. While
waiting for students to join, be a bit creative. Change up the theme to either
make it match the course name or just to something you like.
Do not forget to fill the About section. This is going to be useful to students
before starting your class because it gives them some information about the
course. Place information such as your email, the syllabus, grading scale, and
other information that the students may need through the year.
Daily Use of Classroom
Once your Classroom is set up and students star to join, it is up to you to
have fun with the layout and make the platform work for you. There are some
things that you can do with this platform to help students learn, including:
Make announcements : This helps you communicate with the whole class.
Simply click on the Announcement button, and write the message you want.
It is possible to attach links, YouTube videos, and files from your Google
Drive to the announcement, if needed.
Follow the same procedure used for announcements; thus, you can create a
new assignment. Simply write out the name of the assignment, a short
description, and attach any files that are necessary. Make sure to add the due
date so students can prepare.
Manage students : To manage your students, go to the Students tab. From
here, you can allow students to comment, post, or just read the material. You
can send emails to one or two students at a time, and even remove them from
the class if they end up switching.
Grading assignments : After the assignment deadline is up, you can click on a
student’s name to see the files attached. You can then click on No Grade ,
and then place the grade that you want to give them. If the system
automatically graded a student based on your settings, you can always go
back in and change the grade. Make sure to hit Return when done, to save
the changes.
How to Manage a Class
The first thing that you can do when changing the class and managing it, is to
give it a theme. One thing you will notice is that, you do not have students in
there as soon as it is created, so you can have a bit of fun with it. One way to
do this is, on the right side near the header of the general class, you can
change the class theme. You can use the themes that are provided. Some
photos of classes themselves are good options You can use different
templates for each one, so that you know exactly what theme you are using,
because they can sometimes be a bit complicated.

How to Remove, Delete and View a Class

When using Google Classroom, sometimes you may want to delete a class
when it is the end of the semester; you can always restore it again if you need
to as well. You can also delete it, if you either never want to see that class
again, or you have no use for it because you have assignments already. Now,
if you do not archive these, they will stick around, so make sure that you
archive them first.
Archived classes essentially means that they are in an area where you have
the same materials the work students have, and the posts. You can view it, but
you cannot actually use it, and is good for if a student wants the materials.
Archiving classes is simple to do. You choose the class, see the three dots,
press them, and presto! It is archived.

Now to view an archived class after it is been archived, you press the More
menu (three-lined button) again. Go down to the tab that says Archive , and
then choose the class you want to see.
To delete a class though, you need to do the same thing. Remember, that you
need to archive the class before you can delete it, so scroll all the way down,
choose Archive ; once you have the classes, you need to press the More
(three-dotted) button, and then choose Delete . From there, you will have the
class fully removed. Remember though, you cannot undo this once you have
done it. If you do choose to delete a class, you do not have access to the
comments or the posts; but if you have any files that are in the Drive, you can
always access those, since you have those in the class files themselves.

There are a few class management things that you can implement, and some
tips and tricks of Google Classroom. The first thing that happens, is that
when you get to the Classes tab, and you want to drag and move the classes
around, you can do so. This is a good way to change the order of things, and
it is quite easy to do.
Another important thing to remember too, is that you have the Classroom
function. It is quite handy, and if you want to change the calendar or view it,
you can essentially press the icon with the calendar. You can even check it
out to see what is coming up for every single class, because some classes
may do certain things at different times of the semester.
Finally, you can always adjust the settings at any point. This is done with the
buttons that you see on the home screen. Here, you can change the name of the
class, especially if it is confusing; show the class code if you need it; and
also decide on the Stream, and show whether or not you want items to be
deleted or displayed. There are other features there too, and it is all right
there waiting to be used.
When it comes to Google Classroom, knowing how to create the classes is a
big part of it. If you have classes that you want to add, or you want to get
started with Google Classroom, this is the way to go, and it is the surefire
way to success.
Things Classroom Does Not Do
Google Classroom has a lot of great features and can make teaching a bit
easier, but there are a few things that it is not able to do for teachers. Luckily,
with just a bit of work on your part and using the tools that Google provides,
it is still possible to finish these tasks, and get them to the students without
too much hassle.
Some of the things that Classroom is not able to do include:
Provide quizzes and tests : While you can send quizzes and tests as
assignments through Classroom, this platform will not create them for you.
Using Google Forms, you can create the test, and then attach a link to your
assignments. With the help of Flubaroo, the quizzes are graded for you, but
all of this will be outside Google Classroom.
Chat : As of right now, Classroom does not have a chat feature. You can use
other Google Apps to chat or rely on email to communicate.
Full-featured Forums : The forum feature is not present in this platform, but
you can use Forms and Drive to start discussions in your class.
There are ways to work around most of these disadvantages, so you can still
get all the features you want. You just need to utilize the various apps that
Google provides.
Chapter 3: How You Can Manage the Due Dates,
Homework, And Assignments
Using Google Docs with Assignments
In making an assignment, there will also be times when you want to add a
document to Google Docs. Those can be helpful when offering long
directions, research guides, and other content.
When you add these types of files, you will want to make sure that you select
the appropriate setting for how your students will access it. After adding one
to the task, you can find a drop-down menu of three choices.

Let us take a look at how you may want to use each of these options:

Students can access the file: Use this option if the file is just
something you want your students to access, but do not make any
changes to it.
Students can edit the file : This choice can be beneficial if you
have a document that you want your students to work with or to fill
out together.
Make a copy for each student : If you have a workbook or
document that you want each student to complete individually, this
choice would create a different copy of the same document for
each student.

Using Topics
On the Classwork page, you can use themes to organize and group your
assignments and resources. To create a subject, click the Create button, and
then pick Subject .

Topics will help you coordinate your content around the different units you
teach during the year. You may also use it to divide your content by form,
break it into assignments, classwork, readings, and other subject areas.

Create Group Documents

The first thing is to create a document for the assignment. They include
sheets, documents, etc., and duplicate every group. Ensure that you add the
name of the group, or include a number at the end of the file name for easy
identification and assistance. Users can store group assignment inside the
Drive, so they can locate the stored document easily. It is also very easy to
store documents in the folder of the classroom.
Create A Topic for Group Assignment
Proceed to the tab Class ; click on the Create button and select the topic.
Find a suitable name for the project, input it and then save it.
Select Students
The first thing to do is to tap on the Create control key and select
Assignment . When you get to the dialogue box of Assignment , select the
drop-down menu for Students, and unmark every

student. Then select the number of students that you want inside the group. If
you want to create another group or more, you should repeat the same.
Create Homework
Proceed to the dialogue box of Homework and find a suitable title for the
homework or project; include the name of the group or additional
instructions. Now click on the Group Task topic; now you can give the
group a task to perform. Now assign the task, and ensure that you select
students who can edit in the options, instead of creating another copy for
every student. Users should create a draft for the task before they create the
group.
Reuse One Assignment for More Groups
One exciting feature of the Classroom if the Reuse attribute, which helps
teachers a lot. It helps them avoid typing information all over again for each
student inside the group. The first thing to do is to select the Create control
key, and tap Reuse Post ; the dialogue box for the reuse post will display.
Click on the post that you want to duplicate, and tap reuse. Now you can edit
the project you want for the groups. Make sure that you adjust the group
members through the drop-down of the Student menu, and ensure that you
change the number of the group within the controls and title, if necessary.
Also, you should not forget to remove the homework for a particular group
when you want to create a new group. If you do not want to post the
homework at the moment of creating the group, you can save it inside the
draft folder, and utilize it at a later date.
Post Group Assignments
Whenever you complete the draft of the group assignment, the last step is
posting it inside the group, so that the students can have access to the project,
and can start working. You will find the draft containing the homework that
you create, beneath the group topic that you create. Select More (three-dotted
button), and tap Edit . The conversation box of the homework will show
according to what you post. You can perform the same task whenever you
want to post it to groups.
Chapter 4: How to Get Another Student or A
Teacher into The Class
Add in Other Teachers
It is also possible to add in other teachers to the Classroom, as well to make
learning a bit more enjoyable. If you have another teacher, who is working on
the same kind of lesson plans, both of you can share the account and share
information between your students. This will make it easier for both of you to
work together, answer questions, and get more done inside the classroom. In
addition, if you have a student, teacher, or someone else, who is working
together in the traditional classroom with you, it is a good idea to add them in
with teaching privileges in the classroom as well.
When you are ready to add in some more teachers to the Google Classroom,
no matter what the reason may be, you will need to follow the steps below to
make this happen.
Sign in to your classroom.google.com account.
You can then pick out the class that you would like to add in another teacher
to, and then click on the About button located at the top of the screen.
Here you should see a button Invite Teacher . Click on that, and put a check
mark into the boxes that are next to the teachers you would like to invite.
They will already need to be in the Google Classroom system for your
institution, for you to be able to do this.
If you decide to add in everyone who is on the list, you are able to click on
Select All to make this happen.
If you notice that one of the teachers that you would like to invite is not on
this list, you can just click on My Contacts, and then follow the steps above
again.
Adding in other teachers to your Classroom can be a great way to share some
of the work, get someone to help you out with a larger class, and even to
enhance the learning experience for all of the students. There are a few things
that you should note about adding in teachers to your Classroom though. To
start, the class can only be deleted by the teacher who is considered primary
on the account. So, if you set up the class, you will be the only one who can
delete the class. The primary teacher can also not be un-enrolled or removed
from the class. This is because the primary teacher is going to be the one that
owns all of the materials that belongs to the class, such as the structures,
folders, assignments and more. If this primary teacher were taken off the
class, the system would not work properly.
If there is a teacher who is in the class, you are not able to mute them. This
means that they will be able to make comments, leave feedback and more,
when they are in the Classroom. You should make sure that everyone is on the
same page for how they are supposed to behave in the class, because it will
be hard to stop behavior when removing the teacher completely from the
class later on.
When your email notifications are on, the primary and the additional teachers
are all going to be notified of the comments that the students send in, even if
these comments are private. However, you can change this and ask the
students to send an email directly to you, rather than through the messaging
system, to make it more private if they like.
When there are other teachers in the system, they are also able to add in some
more materials to the Classroom to help with the learning experience. If they
do add in some new materials, all of these materials are going to be found in
the primary teacher's folder.
Inviting in The Students
Now that you have spent some time getting the Google Classroom setup, it is
time to add in the students. It is not going to be much of a classroom if all you
have there are some of the teachers. There are a few ways that you are able
to add in the students who should be in the class, and you are able to choose
the one that works for you. Remember that you will need to go through these
steps for each of the classes that you set up, so be careful that you are getting
the right students into the right classes. Also, before setting this up you should
remember that all of the classes in Google Classroom will have a maximum
limit of 20 teachers and 1000 students at one time, but this is often way more
than one needs.
As mentioned, there are a few different methods that you can use in order to
get students into your Classroom. The first method we are going to take a
look at just inviting the students to come join the class. To do this, you would
use the following steps:
Go to your classroom.google.com account.
From here, you will want to add the students to the class that you have
chosen. Go into the chosen class, click on Students , and then on Invite .
Tick the boxes next to all of the students that you need to add into the class. If
all of the students on the list need to be invited, you can click on Select All .
If you need to see some other list to get the students that you would like to
add in, you need to click on My Contacts . You can also click on Directory
to see some of the other students who are in your domain.
When your list is all done, click on Invite Students .
This is going to send out an invite to all of your students. They will be able to
click on the link, and be added to the Classroom that you set up.
You can also choose to give your students a code. You could come up with a
code for the class, and then the students will be able to go in and add
themselves to the class. Some of the steps that you would need to do to give
out the code to the Classroom include:
Go to your classroom.google.com account.
From here, you will need to get into the Class page at the bottom of the
Stream. Here you should be able to find the email addresses for the students.
Send out an email to all of the students from there with the code inside, so
that they can use this to join the class. You can also choose to write down the
code and give it to the students in class.

You will want to let the students know that they can sign into the classroom
by visiting c lassroom.google.com, clicking on the + , before entering the
code that you give them and clicking Join .
You will then be able to disable or reset the code as you need.
At this point, the students should be able to get into your Classroom and see
the information that you put there. You can also choose to invite students that
are in a particular Google Group. The steps that you would need to make this
happen are given below:
Go to your classroom.google.com account.
You can add in the students that you want with the class and then click on the
Students button at the top.
From here you will want to click on Students , then Invite , and then My
Contacts .
You can then select the particular Google Group that you would like to use in
order to invite people from.
Here, you can tick the boxes next to students that you need to add to this
class. You can also choose to click on Select All , if it is easier for you and
you want to add in all of the students.
When that is done, you can click on Invite Students ; the invitation will be
sent out.
All of these options are going to work well to help you get your first Google
Classroom setup, and it will ensure that all of the students get the invite that
they need to become a part of the class. You can choose any of the options
that work the best for your needs or for your class, but they can all be great
options to help you out. Make sure to get those students invited, so you can
start sharing information with them, giving out assignments, and providing
answers and feedback to help your students learn more than before.
Chapter 5: How to Manage Grades and Transfer
Them to Google Sheets
Grading
Once the student has turned in work, it is time for the teacher to assess it and
give feedback. Open the class, then the assignment. There will be a thumbnail
for any file that has been attached by a student; click this to open and review
the file. When you have reviewed it, you will see the button Add Grade next
to the student’s name; click this and enter their score.

The default point value of any given assignment is 100, but you can change
this easily by clicking on Point Value in the Assignment page. The system
currently only supports whole numbers. This means you cannot use decimal
points, and you also cannot use a letter system.
One of the most helpful things about the digital classroom is that it lets you
easily add in comments to explain the grading, correct errors, or point out
areas the student should pay attention to. You can use the simple keyboard
shortcut Ctrl+ Alt+ M, to add a comment to the student’s work at any time.

Grade Projects
Whenever a user completes a project, teachers can give comments and grade
the project. Select the Class control key and tap the Homework to see the
project within it.
Below are a few steps to take:
Organize the Project by Users That Submit or By Every User
Who Handed the Project
Launch and see the student project by selecting it. Teachers can also add a
comment directly to the file, or input private comments to the projects by
selecting the name of the student.
Teachers can now add grades to the student's project.
Now Ensure That You Check the Box with Names and Select
the Return Control Key
Grading Assignments
There are a number of ways through which teachers can find submissions
from students. The most effective way of doing it, is by entering the class that
you need to grade; click the name of the assignment from Stream view. If you
find that the assignments get lost within the conversations by students, look at
the sidebar located at the top left of Stream view, and you will be able to see
the box for Upcoming Assignments .

The above figure shows that the student has already turned in the assignment.
It is now the work of the teacher to assign the student marks. You can see that
the section for marks is assigned ‘__/100’ .
Identify the assignment that you need to grade; then follow the steps given
below:
Click on the name of the student who submitted the assignment that you need
to grade.
If the student had attached a document, it will be opened. You can rely on the
commenting feature in Drive to give a detailed feedback on the specific parts
of the submission. Once done, close the document. The changes that you have
made will be saved automatically.
After returning to the Classroom, click the box to the right of the student name
where __/100 is visible. In my case, the total for the assignment is 100 and I
want to assign 68 marks to the student. I type 68 inside that box (shown
below).

Ensure that you have checked the box located to the left of the student name;
then click the RETURN button located at the top of the window. This will
save the grade that you have assigned to the student’s assignment. In addition
to this, the student will be notified that the assignment they submitted has
been graded. After clicking the RETURN button, a new window will pop
up, asking you to confirm the return to the student. If you have any additional
comments to the student regarding the assignment, write them in the provided
box. Click RETURN again, and the process will complete successfully.
You will also see on the window on the left side of the students whom you
have graded. In my case, I have assigned only one student a grade (shown
below).
The name of the student as well as the grade assigned is shown in the
window.
Grading Tips
It is possible for you to return an assignment to a student without grading it,
by checking the box located to the left of student name, and clicking
RETURN button. This is important and useful for assignments that have been
submitted with an error.
After returning an assignment, the student gets an email notification about the
same.
You are allowed to change the student’s grade anytime you want by clicking
the grade, then typing in the new grade. Note that this should be done within
the same box, where we first entered the student grade.
If you click the Folder button, you will be able to open the Google Drive
folder in which all the submissions from students have been stored. This can
help you when you need to view all the submitted assignments at once.
By default, each assignment has a total of 100 points, but this can be changed;
click on the drop-down arrow, and choose another value or type a value of
your own. You can also select the option of not scoring the assignment.
Chapter 6: Motivational Techniques to Help Kids
Get Excited
Demonstrations of Learning
Teaching Math
If you are thinking how else you can expand the experience of learning Math
or using Classroom in your Math classes, here are some creative ways to
employ.
Problem of the Week
Aptly known as POW, a Problem-of-the-Week can be anything that you feel
needs more attention. It can be a problem you have identified, or a problem
that your students can identify. You can create games that can help students
learn about the problem differently, and participating students can submit
their work directly to Google Classroom.

Link Interactive Simulations

There are several websites dedicated to providing helpful Math simulations.
Sites like Explore Learning have thousands of Math simulations and
variations that students can look up to solve mathematical problems. You can
link these URLs in your Classroom, either as part of an assignment or through
an announcement.
Link to Playsheets
Playsheets fall between gamification and GBL. Teachers can link up relevant
Playsheets and give these are assignment for students. These playsheets give
immediate feedback to students, and it is an excellent learning and
motivational tool that tells the students that they are on the right track.
Use Google Draw
Google Draw is another creative tool that allow students and teachers to
create virtual manipulations such as charts, Algebra tiles and so on. Draw
images that make it easy for students to identify with Math. This can be used
to create differentiated assignments targeting students with different learning
levels.
Use Digital Tools
Digital tools can also be used to solve various math problems. These tools
can be used from Google Drive and integrated with Google Docs. Once
done, students can submit their solved problems to Google Classroom.

Teach Programming
Get students to use programs that can enable them to exhibit their
understanding of mathematical concepts.
Teaching Science
Hangout with Experts
Get an expert, whom you are connected to in real life, to talk about their
experiences about working in a science related field, to help students with
science-related subjects. You can use Google Hangouts to send questions the
class has, and link Hangouts to your Google Classroom. This enables the
students to access the Hangout and participate in the questioning, or even
watch the interview after the session is done. The Hangout session can be
archived for later viewing.
Collecting Evidence
Have your students submit proof of science experiments, by sending having
them upload photos or videos of their science projects to Google Classroom.
Give Real Life Examples
Customize your science projects and assignments, so that it gets students
going out to get real-life samples, which they can record on their mobile
devices. They can take these images and submit it immediately to the Google
Classroom. Make it interesting; students that submit their answers faster get
extra points!
Crowdsourcing Information
Get students into the idea and activity of crowdsourcing. Create a Google
Spreadsheet with a specific topic, and specify what information they need
and what goals the project needs to accomplish. Upload the document to

Google Classroom and get students to

find and contribute information.
Teaching Writing & Reading
Provide Templates
Allow students to access writing templates on Google Classroom for things
such as formal letters, informal letters, reports, assignments, resumes and
cover letters.
Reading Records
Establish a Weekly Reading Record on Google Classroom, where they can
record information on the times that they have read during the week. Instead
of writing it down on a reading diary, allow them to update a form on Google
Classroom by entering the necessary data. This allows them to immediately
add in the information of the books that they have read, while it is still fresh
in their minds.

Collaborate on Writing Projects

Get your students to collaborate on writing projects via group assignments.
These projects can be anything from preparing newspaper articles, journals,
e-portfolios, etc.
Spelling Tests
You can create a simple 1-10 or 1-20 Weekly Spelling Test via Google
Forms. Get students to type in their answers as you read out the list of words.
Once completed, apply a formula to judge if they are correct or not; hence,
marking becomes automated.
Teaching Physical Education
Didn’t think PE could be done via Google Classroom? Here are some ideas:
Post Fitness Videos
Post fitness videos to help your students understand how to perform a
workout. Send out videos to any psychical activity that you want students to
do in their next PE session. You can also just post a video after classes, so
students can practice the exercise in their own time and work on their form.
Get Students to Post Videos of Their Daily Workout
Have your students post videos in the public feed on your Google Classroom,
with a hashtag such as #midweekfitspo. Encourage students to work out and
post their videos each week.
Link to Safety Videos
Post up safety videos for your PE activities so your students know what kind
of moves they need to do to exercise safely.
Post Resources for Activities
PE teachers can also post up useful resources for games and activities such
as rules and methods, of playing, before the student’s next PE session. It
would help the students prepare and know what to expect for their next class.
Create A Fitness Tracker
Assign students to a Fitness Tracker spreadsheet and make a copy for each
student. Assign a due date for the end of the semester for their physical
education class. You can monitor each student’s progress by checking out the
assignment folder in the Google Classroom.
Use the spreadsheet to get your students to track their progress. Whenever
students update their results, the spreadsheet automatically updates dynamic
charts, so students can see their progress visually over the entire semester.
You can either pair students up to work in partners or individually. Get the
students to take photos of each other’s forms when practicing certain tasks,
so that you can evaluate their form and correct it by giving them feedback via
Classroom or during PE classes. A rubric would be helpful here too, so that
students can self-evaluate their own workouts and make corrections where
necessary.
Other Teaching Methods to Use
Attach Patterns and Structures
Upload patterns and structures that students and identify and explain. Students
can also collaborate with other student to identify patterns and structures to
come up with solutions.
Use Geometric Concepts
Use Google Drawings or Slides to insert drawings of geometric figures for
Maths, Science and even for Art.
Collaborate Online with Other Teachers
If you know other teachers have modules or projects which would come in
handy with your class, collaborate and enable your students to join is as
well. Different teachers allow for different resources and the teaching load
can also be distributed.
Peer Tutoring
Senior students can also be allowed to access your Google Classroom at an
agreed time on a weekly basis, to tutor and give support to junior students or
students in differentiated assignments.
Celebrate Success
Google Classroom also enables the teacher to encourage students through
comments whenever they submit an assignment, because feedback can be
given immediately, and this can be done either private or publicly
Digital Quizzes
Quizzes can be used for various subjects on Google Classroom. Get your
students to submit their answers quickly for extra points.
Share Presentations
Share whatever presentations and slides that you have with your students to
help them with assignments that you have given them.

that you have all the resources, and can use them effortlessly. You can share
lesson planning among all teachers, to better use knowledge and time. With
the help of a simple configurator, you can add all your categories and thus,
assess a student's level of learning information and skills, their level of
performance, and/or the quality of work. Email the sections to the students,
so they can assess themselves and find out how they think they have done a
project. Let your colleagues, parents, or legal guardians rate the student in a
particular aspect, by sending them an email with access to the rubric to be
rated. Show your co-workers and students the rubrics you are using for the
assessment. You can export both the original and the rated sections. Tell your
colleagues about the categories created from the app, so that they can also
use them to rate their students.
Top Five Hidden Features of Google Classroom

Templates
If you are a teacher, this is actually a good feature to remember. While it may
not be a hidden feature, it is often completely overlooked. If you are looking
for a good template to show off notes, a letter, or even formalize any
document, this is something that you should consider. It is also good for
students, especially if they tend to have unfinished class projects, they need
reminder to finish. For example, if they are to write a mock resume, it is
much easier to do it with this template, than using a generic document from in
Google Docs. This is a great feature that can be found on the homepage of the
Google Doc, and you can look at the many options just by pressing the More
button.
The Hidden Assignment Calendar
This is an assignment calendar that is used to keep both students and teachers
working together. Every time teachers create questions, there are due dates
attached to it, and you can see this immediately on the calendar of Google
Classroom. To find it go to More (three-lined button) , and press Calendar .
Once it shows, you can see all the work assigned to your class and anything
else that is due soon. Teachers also get the G suite calendar, that can be used
to put assignments in too, and you can access it directly to add different
events. For example, field trips, tutoring, or even meetings can be put on
there. You can also add general school events too, so every single student is
on the right track. It helps to keep everyone together.
Research Tool
This is a tool for those who want to have some online research added to their
projects in Google Docs. It is actually super simple, since it allows you to
refer to images and research without leaving your document, so you do not
have to click so many different tabs. It is an underrated and often an
overlooked tool that exists; you just probably did not know about it. You can
either open it from the tools section and right-click a word to research; or
you can press Control+Alt+Shift+I. You are then given a whole bunch of
topics related to what you put in it, whether they are general Wikipedia
articles, images or scholarly articles. Then, you can choose the content, and
put it in your document, and also cite it easily. It is an underrated tool that is
actually a godsend for many people who do research papers, since it can be
used to make your learning experience easier. It is a hidden feature of Google
Classroom, that allows the classroom experience to be even better, for both
students and teachers.

Copy Header
If you are making a Google page such as a student website, this is a great tool
that can be used to help improve the navigation of this site. Every time you
create a new page, you are given a header that is blank. However, some
teachers want to use a similar heading, or even the same one for every single
page they have. If you want to do this, the first thing to do is click the page
that has the Reuse button. From there, press + , and then choose Add to
new page , which causes it to be copied over once again. It is a hidden
feature for teachers who are employing Google sites within their Google
Classroom software, and it can make a big difference if you want to save a
little bit of time, and can make your life easier.
Filtering Searches
This is a hiding place that is in plain sight. At the very top of the Drive, you
will see an arrow that goes down along the edge. Once you click on it, you
will be given many different search options, to filter different search results.
This is a lifesaver for teachers, because if you have got a ton of different
projects that are in the pipeline, you really want to make it so that you can get
to all of the files. If you have a large library period as a student, this is a
great way to narrow down the results. You can filter it by the different file
types, the names of each of the files, and even the date it is been modified by
the person as well. For those documents that are shared, you can filter it by
the people you have shared the file with, too. You can also utilize the action
item that comes with this, or any suggestions you would like to do to the file.
It is a good way to help you with organizing your Drive, and for both students
and teachers who use Google Classroom, it saves a lot of time. After all, if
you are a teacher who teaches multiple sections, or covers a lot of course
content, it can be a nightmare to keep up with it all; this will make your life
easier in the long-run.
These features are in some cases hidden in plain sight, but a lot of them are
underrated tools that can facilitate your experience. For the average teacher
or student, these various features can make a world of difference in your
ability to use Google Classroom, so it is definitely important to make sure
that you use these different features, since they can help improve your life.

Thеrе arе tasks іn thе nеw wоrksрaсе іn Gооglе Сlassrооm that havе nоt

Chapter 8: Create A Lesson

When you teach using Google Classroom, your assignments become so much
more than simply worksheets and projects. The ability to directly attach
supplemental materials, videos, links, or other information, lets you create
comprehensive lessons and share them easily with your students.
To create an assignment, go into the class Stream. Hover over the Add button
at the bottom, then click Create Assignment . You will be prompted to enter
a title and description or instructions. Whatever you title the assignment will
also be the name of the associated Google Drive folder, so make sure it is
something you will be able to easily find. Numbering your assignments can
sometimes be a good idea.
You have a lot of options when you create an assignment. You can have it
post immediately, save it as a draft, or finish it and schedule it to post at a
later date. To post it immediately, click Assign . For other options, click the
down arrow beside it. Your scheduled posts and drafts will be in the Saved
posts menu. You can choose the due date or set it to have no due date, if you
prefer. If you want to get very specific, you can even set the due date for a
particular time.
You can also choose whether you assign it to an entire class or just to select
students, which makes it easy to give out make-up work or follow-up
revisions. The default will be to post to the entire class; to change this, click
the down arrow next to All students then de-select the option. You will now
be able to choose which students receive the assignment.
Adding links or materials to your assignment is also easy. To upload a file,
simply click Attach , then select the correct file. You can add files both from
your computer and from a Google Drive. If you want to remove the
attachment, just click the X . You can also attach links to videos or webpages
that students should use as references.
When you upload a file, you will have three options of how students can
interact with it: view only, edit, or create copy. The first is best for reading
assignments and other materials the students should reference but not change.
The last is best for worksheets and other assignments that students will fill
out and post online, letting each student interact with his or her own
assignment without impacting anyone else. The middle option is great for
collaborative projects, and is very helpful for group or team projects, as will
be described later in the book.
You can edit an assignment at any time by clicking on the three-dots, More
menu, then Edit . Make your changes and save it as you would in any
document. Keep in mind that if you have posted the same assignment to
multiple classes; editing it will only affect a single class, not every
assignment in every class.
After you have assigned the lesson, you can see how the students are
interacting with it by clicking on the class, then on the assignment in question.
The Student Work page lets you review how many students have completed
the work at a glance, and determine who still needs to turn in their project.
You can also see who you have given feedback to, and view both the work
and all comments on it by clicking on the student’s name.
When you are interacting with students on an announcement or group-wide
assignment, you can add either class comments or private comments for a
single student. To make the comment private, click on the student’s name. To
comment to the whole class, click Instructions, then

Add class comment .

The student view of all this will look different than what the teacher sees, of
course. On their class Stream, the assignment will have an Open button that
will allow them to retrieve and then turn in the assignment. You may find it
helpful to include instructions on how to interact with assignments in the
class Stream on the class About page, especially for students who have
limited experience with digital classrooms.

Chapter 9: Share Announcements and

Assignments with Multiple Classes
Working Across Classes
If you teach multiple classes within your school, you know it can be tricky to
stay organized and maintain accurate records for all of your courses. If you
teach the same course semester after semester, maintaining accurate records
of the assignments given and submissions can be equally difficult.
By keeping all of your records in one place, Google Classroom gives you a
searchable and organized hub for accessing all of your classes, both present
and past. They also give you tools that make it easier to re-use
announcements, assignments, and other documents across courses.
If you want to post the same assignment or announcement to multiple classes
at the same time, click the down arrow next to where it says For on the
assignment, and select all the classes you want it to post to. If you choose this
option, you will not be able to select individual students within each class.
Posts to multiple classes are automatically shared with all students in the
class.
You can also easily re-use announcements and assignments you made in past
versions of the class. Go into the interface for the current class and hover
over the Add button. Select the option Reuse Post . You can then click the
class where the original post was published and find the post you want to
reuse. It will default to all students, but provided you are only sharing it with
a single class, you can select individual students if you would prefer.
Remember that once you have posted an announcement or assignment across
multiple classes edits made to one will not affect the global assignment. You
can think of it as the assignment being copied to each class, creating a unique
version of the post each time it is replicated.

Reusing old posts and posting to multiple classes at once can be a huge time
saver for the busy teacher. This can be especially helpful for setting up cross-
disciplinary collaboration or events. You will also likely find it helpful for
more generalized announcements like welcome messages, reminders about
upcoming standardized tests, or other information your students will need to
know.
Assignments
The Google Classroom allows the teachers to create assignments and assign
them to students. When working assignments, the teachers are provided with
a number of options. The following steps will help you create an assignment
in Google Classroom.
Begin by opening the class in which you need to create the assignment.
On the class page, click the CLASSWORK tab located at the top.
You will see a button written CREATE . Click this button.
After clicking the button, you will see many options showing the items that
you can create for the class. Choose Assignment .
A new window will pop up, in which you should feed the details of the
class. Give a title to the assignment as well as any additional instructions in
the next box.
Note that the window also allows you to specify the due date for the
assignment, as well as the time on the due date by which the assignment
should be submitted.
You are also allowed to choose the type of assignment that you need to
create. It can either be an assignment to all students or for just a selected few.
You are also allowed to attach files to your assignment. Note that you can get
these files from various storages including Google Drive, your computer etc.
The file can also be a video file.
Once you have filled in all the assignment details, click the Assign button to
assign the assignment to your students. Once the assignment has been created
successfully, you will be notified of the same.
In some cases, you may need to assign the assignment to more than one class.
In such a case, you only have to click on the class name from the top left
corner of the window, and choose all the classes to which you need to assign
the work.
Most teachers who use the Google Classroom will prefer to create an
assignment from their Drive because this is where most teachers store their
resources. However, you will get an advantage when you choose a Drive
resource in the Google Classroom, which becomes clear with the options that
you get when you choose a file from the Drive:
Students will be able to view the file: You should only choose this option
when you need all students to be in a position to view the file, but not to
modify it. It is a good option for generic handouts and study guides, that the
entire class needs access to.
Students can edit the file: This option should be chosen when you need all
students to be able to edit and work on one document. This is good for a
collaborative class project, in which the students may be working on
different slides in a similar Google presentation. It is also well applicable in
a situation where the students are all brainstorming on an idea
collaboratively, and to discuss it in the next class.
Make a copy for each student : When this option is chosen, the Google
Classroom will make a copy of the file for each student and give them rights
to edit the file. Note that only copies of the original file will be availed to the
students; however, the teacher’s master will remain with him and the students
will not be granted access to it. This is a good option when you need to
distribute a paper with an essay question for students to work on, or where
you have a digital worksheet template that you need each student to fill their
own answers.
You can also view assignments at any time that you want. This is important as
you may need to know the assignment details like the due date. This is
possible, and can be done by following the steps given below.
Sign into your Google Classroom account.
Click the Menu button located at the top. Choose Calendar .
You will be taken to a new window with dates. To see either the past or
future work, you must use the arrow that is next to date.

If you need to see all assignments for all your classes, just choose the All
Classes option. If you need to see the assignments for only one class, just
click All Classes, then choose the class for which you need to see the
assignments.
Once you identify an assignment or question that you are looking for, just
click to open it.
Organizing Assignments
With Google Classroom, one can now organize the assignments based on
their topic. This way, you are able to group the assignments by the unit or
classwork from the tab. This is a good way to help students and teachers find
the assignment they are looking for more easily.
You can track both your assignments and work using both Google calendar
and class calendar. Once a teacher has created an assignment in the
Classroom, you will be able to see it in both calendars, if the account is
being used for both calendars.
The following are the steps that will help you create topics in Google
Classroom.
Navigate To The Class
Click the Classwork tab to open it.
Click the Create button.
Select Topic .
Give the topic a name and click Add .

After creating the topic, you will be notified that students are only allowed to
see topics with published posts.
You can now add assignments to the topic from the screen for creating
assignments. You only have to create the drop-down that is located next to the
option Topic .
If you have already created the assignment, the following steps will help you
assign the assignment to a topic.
Click the Classwork tab.
Hover over the assignment that you need to move, using your mouse.
Click on More (three-dotted button).
Select Edit .
Identify the drop-down box that is located next to Topic .
Click the drop-down menu, then choose the topic you need to move it to.
Once you have assigned the assignment to a topic, click the SAVE button to
save the changes you have just made.
How Students Access Assignments
When students log into their accounts, they can see their active assignments
by clicking and opening the class that they are part of, and viewing all their
upcoming assignments. However, there is a quick and easy way to do this.
Just click the Menu button located on the top left corner of the screen; then
choose To-do from the menu that pops out.
The student will then be able to see all the assignments for his or her classes:
the ones they have turned in, the outstanding ones and the ones that are
overdue. The ones that the teacher has graded will be shown alongside their
grades.
Once you click on any of the assignments, the relevant file for the student will
be opened. If you are dealing with a Google Drive file, an additional button
will be added to the toolbar located to the top right corner, close to Share
button. The button will be marked Turn it in . Once you click the button, the
assignment will be submitted to the teacher. For the regular assignment, you
can submit by clicking the MARK AS DONE button.
Chapter 10: Reduce Cheating
One of the main fears most people have about a digital Classroom is how to
verify that the right person is on the other end of the keyboard—and that they
are not looking at someone else’s answers while they are entering their own.
There are some new features built into Google Classroom to make cheating
less likely than in previous similar software. There are also a few steps that
teachers can take to make sure students are doing their own work.

The way Google Classroom saves files in the Drive prevents students from
seeing each other’s assignments. Only teachers and administrators have
access to the Classroom assignment folder on the Google Drive. This is
already an improvement over digital classrooms, which use a shared Drive
accessible by all students, where anyone could look at any copy another
student’s work if they so chose.
The revision history on the assignment document can also be a handy tool
when you think someone may have copied the work of another. You can see
whether material was typed, or whether large blocks of text were copied into
the interface. You can also see how many times the student accessed and
edited the file.

Technology does give students new ways to cheat, and a lot of teachers feel
like having a remote portal for the Classroom makes it easier for them to do
so. However, the opposite can be the case, if you use the technology wisely.
When it comes to homework, having the assignment online lets the teacher
see more information about how the student spent their time working on it.
There are also ways that you can alter your assessment process that can
discourage cheating. It is easier to cheat on simple answers, like multiple-
choice, single word, or true/false questions. Students will be forced to do
their own work, if you ask more open-ended questions that demand critical
thinking.
This does not mean you cannot use simpler questions in the course of your
assessment, but you can remove the motivation to cheat by omitting those
scores from a student’s final grade. The assessment in this case becomes
purely informative, giving you and a student a sense of how well they are
grasping the material. There is no motivation to cheat in this scenario; it
would only keep them from learning the skills they would require, to perform
their graded tasks well.
Because work can be turned in and returned to the student as many times as
you like, you can also create multiple checkpoints where the student turns in
their work so far during the course of working on an assignment. This forces
the student to do the work incrementally, decreasing their need to cheat as
they are rushing to finish an assignment last minute.
Chapter 11: See Who Is Really Working On Team
Projects
One of the most exciting things about a digital classroom is the extent to
which it encourages communication and collaboration, both within the class
and between teachers and students in other disciplines. Organizing group and
team projects is one area where Google Classroom excels over past digital
classroom services.
If you are looking to encourage more collaboration from your class in
general, one easy thing you can do is select the middle options when you
upload class documents and assignments. This choice allows students to edit
the file in question collectively. This works well for spreadsheets and slides,
though it may be a bit overwhelming with text-based documents; the latter
tend to function best when edited by no more than five people at a time.
For small group work, you can post the assignment only to the students within
a given group, allowing them to work together remotely without interference
from other classmates. You could also assign students to a particular group,
and then title each file clearly, so they know which one they are working on.
This leaves you the option of allowing the students to sign up for their own
groups using an associated spreadsheet. Because the teacher will also be
able to see who was interacting with the shared document, and for how long,
it is easier to identify which team members were not pulling their weight.

One question you will have to answer when you are using Google Classroom
for team projects is, how to determine who will be responsible for
submitting the final work at the conclusion of the project. If the online portal
is accompanied by an in-class presentation, this may be a moot point. If the
final work will be submitted online though, it may be helpful to designate one
team leader who will make sure the group’s files are submitted on time.
Google Slides
Another less used offering in Google’s educational arsenal are Google
Slides. They work especially well in a digital classroom. Like with the
forms mentioned before, you will have to create the document in the Google
Drive interface, before you can post it to Classroom in an assignment. Make
sure to post it so that students can edit.
For a whole-class collaboration, you can assign each student their own slide
within the document, encouraging them to do their work or post their work to
it regularly. This can be a forum where everyone can see and comment on
each other’s work, encouraging peer -to-peer feedback and interaction.
Google Hangout

One of the problems with past versions of the digital classroom was that,
remote communication happened exclusively with back-and-forth, text-based
messages. Even the addition of audio to this, through Skype or a similar
program, does not generate the same kind of collaborative energy as students
will have when engaging face-to-face.
Setting up a chat room for each group in Google Hangout, gives them the
option of unsupervised video chat time outside of class. This lets them
interact in a more natural way without having to organize a meeting place.
This does not have to be only for group projects; an open-ended Google
Hangout associated with the class can be a great way to encourage students
to help each other with difficult assignments or projects.
Chapter 12: Offer Virtual Office Hours
Office hours can be a great opportunity to interact with your students a one-
on-one basis. For some students, it can be a chance to get some personalized
tutoring on topics they are struggling with; for others, it can be a chance to
bring up concerns or issues in a private setting. As valuable as they are to the
learning process. However, office hours can also be tricky to set up in a
physical classroom, especially considering the demands that are placed on
teachers’ time, both during and outside the school day.
Using Google Hangout in conjunction with your Google Classroom interface
can be a great way to offer your students office hours without having to
arrange an in-person meeting. The only demand on the teacher’s time is that
they be at their computer and available to chat during the times specified. It
is also more convenient for the student, who can log in from home, rather
than staying after school or sacrificing their lunch period.
The easiest way to set up virtual office hours is by utilizing the About page
of the Classroom interface. You can include a permalink to the Google
Hangout of the class, that will stay active for the entirety of the semester or
school year. It is easy for the teacher to set up, and students only have to click
this link to open a video conference.
You may find this arrangement is so easy, that you want to use Google
Hangout video conferences for other meetings, as well. It can be an easier
way to set up parent-teacher conferences, for example, and can be used for
both group and individual tutoring sessions. If you decide to go this route,
you can change the settings in your Google Calendar to create a video
conference link any time you set up an appointment. Scroll down in the
Settings menu, until you see the line that says Automatically add video calls
to events I create . Select Yes , and click Save button at the bottom, to put
this into effect.
Creating a permalink on your Classroom About page to your Google Hangout
office hours is just as easy. If you have not used Google Hangout in the past,
your first step will be to install the plugin. You can either navigate directly to
the Hangout site, or click on any event in your Calendar that shows Join
Video Call as an option.
Open the room that you will be using for the office hours. At the top of the
window, you will see a URL. This is a ‘jump in link’ that you can send to
someone, to invite them to join the chat. Copy this link, then go over to your
Classroom interface. On the About page, you will see a button, Add
materials . Click on this, then look for the icon that looks like a chain. Paste
the link into the box that opens up here; click on Add , and then Post .
Once you have added the office hours to your page, navigate back to it and
double check to make sure the link copied and is functioning correctly. You
can also enter a description on this page if you want to specify what kinds of
issues the office hours are appropriate for, or any other information that you
think students will need to know.
Virtual office hours are one more of the many ways Google Classroom can
be used to streamline the educational experience. It is also a telling example
of how various different Google apps and programs can be used together, to
maximize the value your students get out of your class time to great effect.
Chapter 13: Sending Your First Announcement
Begin by logging into your Google Classroom account.
Click the class to which you need to post the announcement. Note that
students belonging to that class will get the announcement.
You will be taken to the class window. Click inside the box Share
something with your class .

Enter the announcement that you need to pass to the students, then click the
POST button. The announcement will be posted. All students belonging to
the class will get an email notification that you have created an
announcement.
Also, as you type the announcement, the Classroom will save it
automatically, and put a draft in the section for Saved announcement at the
top of Stream.
Sometimes, you may need to post an announcement to more than one class.
This is possible and all students in those classes will be reached by the
announcement. To do this, click the down arrow next to For when posting the
announcement.
Clicking the down arrow will show you all the classes that are available.
Identify the classes to which you need to post the announcement and select
them. After selecting the classes, type your announcement in the space
provided for you, then click the POST button to post the announcement.
Other than posting an announcement to many classes or individual whole
classes, Classroom allows you to post an announcement to individual
selected students. However, Classroom does not allow you to post the
announcement to over 100 students simultaneously. To choose the students
whom to send the announcement to, click the down arrow located next to All
Students in the section for posting announcements.

This will show you the list of students who are available in the chosen class.
Just select the students whom you need reach by the announcement.
Once you have chosen the students, enter your announcement then click the
POST button. The announcement will be sent to the selected students only.
To see the number of students reached by the announcement, open the Stream
page. To see the names of the students, just click Number Students, and they
will be shown.
It is also possible for you to add attachments to your announcements. The
attachments can be YouTube videos, Google Drive files or the links to your
attachments. Students are only allowed to view Google Drives documents,
but co-teachers can edit them.
Note that anytime you get a message that says you do not have permission to
attach a file, click Copy . The Classroom will make a copy to attach to
announcement, and save it to class Drive folder.
To upload a file, just click the File icon, choose the file then upload it.
To upload a Drive, click the Drive icon, choose the item then upload it.
You can also search for a YouTube video and attach it. To do this, click the
YouTube icon; enter the keywords for the video, and then click Search .
Click the video once found then choose Add . If you need to attach the video
link by URL, click YouTube , then URL . Enter the URL, then choose Add .
To add a link, just click the Link icon. Enter the URL, then click Add Link .
Anytime that you need to do away with an attachment, just click the X
(remove) located next to the attachment (icons mentioned are shown)

Scheduling Announcements
Also, as you type the announcement, the Classroom will save it
automatically, and put a draft in the section for Saved announcement at the
top of Stream.
If you need to post the announcement immediately, just click the POST
button. If you need to schedule the announcement to be posted, follow the
steps given below.
First type your announcement in the relevant area.
Click the down arrow located next to the POST button.

You will then be required to choose the date and the time to post the
announcement. For the date, you can choose it by clicking the down arrow,
shown beside the default date. For time, you have to type it manually.

Once you have filled the date and time values, click the SCHEDULE button
to schedule the announcement. The announcement is automatically posted at
the scheduled date and time.
If you need to schedule the announcement for some other class, schedule it
first for a single class, then reuse it in the other class.
Once the announcement has been scheduled, you will see a section for Saved
announcements , with the number of announcements that you have saved. In
my case, I have only one saved announcement, as shown below.
You can click this section and see more details regarding the announcement.
If you click the announcement, it will be opened in a popup window, and you
will be able to edit the details of the announcement.
If you need to save an announcement in the form of a draft, you only have to
click the down arrow located next to the POST button, and then choose the
option for Save draft . This will also be shown at the top of the Stream page.
Anybody who is a member of that class will be able to add a comment to the
announcement. This can be done by following these simple steps:
First, log into your Google Classroom account.
Click the class with the announcement you want.
On Stream page, identify the posted announcement then click Add class
comment .
Type in the comment, then click POST .
Editing an Announcement
Once an announcement has been posted to more than one class, if edited, it is
changed to one class. To edit an announcement, follow the steps given
below:
First, log into your Google Classroom account.
Select an option.
For an announcement that is already posted, move to the Stream page, next to
the announcement. Choose More (three-dotted button), then Edit .

The comment will be opened in a popup that is editable. Make the changes
that you need, then click Save . The changes will be added to the post.

When editing the post as shown above, you are allowed to attach new
attachments or edit the existing ones.
For a scheduled announcement or a draft announcement, follow the steps
below.
Move to the Stream page, then click Saved Announcements from the top.
Identify the announcement, then click to open it. Make your changes.
Choose the correct option.
For the case of a scheduled announcement, click on Schedule .

The Google Classroom also allows you to delete announcements. This can be
done by following the steps given below:
First, log into your Google Classroom account.
Select an option.
For the case of an already posted announcement:
Move to the Stream page, and click the three buttons next to the
announcement. Choose Delete .
To confirm the deletion, click Delete again.
For the case of a scheduled or a draft announcement:
Move to the top of the Stream page, then click Saved announcements .
Click the X (remove) located next to the announcement, then choose Delete .
Chapter 14: Starting an Online Discussion with
Questions
Comments And Discussions

There are various levels of interpersonal interaction that you can engage in,
on Google Classrooms. One popular choice is to set up an all-class
discussion, and require each student to make at least one post. While you
will still end up with some students who are far more loquacious than others,
this will at least make sure you are hearing from every student a little bit. It
will also make it easier to identify those students who are more reticent, who
may need some help coming out of their shell.
When you leave a comment on a student’s work in Google Classroom, you
should think of it less as a static editorial mark, and more as the beginning of
a conversation. Ask the students questions that will deepen their
understanding of the topic, or push their thoughts into an unexpected
direction. Encourage students to post comments of their own, pointing out
places they did not feel comfortable with their work, or asking for
clarification on something they answered incorrectly.
The most important tool for personalizing the learning process is not the
digital interface itself, but the teacher’s ability to interact with it
productively. Encouraging them to post comments and engage in online
discussions allows you to get a sense of the students’ personalities, both
online and in-person. This knowledge will be instrumental in providing each
student with the best learning environment.

Chapter 15: Handing out and Taking in

Assignments
You can create assignments and quizzes in Google Classroom, and do a lot
with it. Here, we will discuss some features involved in creating
assignments.

1) You can create an assignment by signing in, choosing your class, and then
pressing + button, and creating an assignment.
2) You can change the assignment details by putting in the description and
changing the due date.
3) You can choose whether an assignment is graded or ungraded by choosing
the option as well.
4) You can also add materials to an assignment by creating an option to
upload files. You can also choose whether students can view, edit, or if you
want to make a copy for every student, by pressing the down arrow.
5) For YouTube videos, you want to click the YouTube option, search for it,
type in the keywords, and then click on the video to add. You can also attach
URLs to by entering the URL and choosing to add it.
6) There is an option to recreate the assignment again, by choosing the link
and clicking on it.
7) The Create option allows students to create files and drawings right in
Classroom. They just press create and then make the assignment.
8) If you want to turn in the assignment, you just press Turn-In when a
student goes to the assignment.

9) If you want to create an assignment on Android, what you do is tap

Classroom, choose the class. Then press + button to enter the assignment.
From there, do the same as before.
10) If you want to change the due date of an assignment, you go to Due Date ,
choose a different date or time, and then press Done to complete this.
11) If you need to make announcements to the class, you can choose Create
Announcements in order to make these.
12) You can always, with every single Google Classroom tool you use,
create a link and attach to it by going to link, and then choosing to share the
link with it.
13) You can use it for both turning in items in Drive, and also for documents
not available in Drive.
14) You can create quizzes by choosing Quizzes , and then choose Make it a
quiz .
15) However, you can choose whether or not the students see the results, or if
they are held on so you can grade it individually. You can choose whether
students will see missed questions.
16) If you want to set it up so that it self-grades, you can create multiple
choice answers, and then press the answer key and put in the answer. The
self-grading option only works on multiple-choice questions though.
17) You can also do this in Google Forms by creating a form, choosing
accepting responses, and creating one page for answer keys, and one for the
questions.
18) You can only use this for an exact-match situation though, so do not
expect to rely on it that much.
19) You should make sure that each of these have names on them, so that the
student has an option to fill out the name, and in turn, allow the student to
have better ability to say what the answers are.
20) If you want to create assignments related to spreadsheets, you can create
a survey with this. But, it does not have a ‘skip logic’ function like other
software.
21) Teachers can use Google Forms as well for surveys and other student
assignments, and can even add or edit different questions they want students
to answer.
22) Forms can also predict the teacher’s answers, which allow smart quizzes
to be administered, and saves teachers’ time.
23) The predictive text can also help you add some trickier options and
curveballs, and will do so automatically.
24) You can also choose what students see after a quiz by opening the quiz.
Go to Settings , choose Quizzes , and choose what the person can see and
what you want to show.
25) You can also under quizzes, go to General , and then under the Requires
Sign In , uncheck so it is restricted. This is good for students that are not in
the system jest.
26) If you do not need to attach assignments, you literally just have to press
to mark the assignment as done, and it will be seen.
27) With Google Classroom, you can always attach various items, whether
they be forms, or whatever, and if the document has your name on it, you can
turn it in by opening and reviewing the document, entering further
information, and then turn it in. The teacher will automatically see this.
28) You can attach other items, when you are turning in an assignment. Press
the down arrow and choose the link to attach it to, and then click Turn In so
you can confirm this.
29) For assignments that just need to be marked done, you can always click
the assignment and leave private comments. All assignments are in the class
calendar too. Unless stated otherwise, you can always unclick an assignment
as done, choose to edit it, and from there turn it in to reconfirm. Obviously if
it is past the due date, you will not be able to do this.
30) One feature Google Classroom has that might be a problem, is that if you
turn in an assignment again, it will be marked late. Teachers will have to
manually go in and fix that.
31) All assignments can be edited by choosing the option and then choosing
to edit it. You can also choose to add comments by going to View the
assignment, hit Instructions , then Add Class Comment and Post .
32) To undo assignments, go to Classwork . Choose More ( three-dotted
button), and then choose Delete . You can delete once again to confirm this.
These features allow you to utilize Google Classroom and the assignments
that you want to add. It is simple, and very effective.
Chapter 16: Managing Your Google Classroom
The digital revolution in schools renders them completely paperless; teachers
need to start seeking new approaches for handling their Classroom, interacting
with students, and handing out assignments. Google Classroom is a web service
for classrooms, colleges, and educational institutions that have a personal
Google Account; some of them find the right solution. Let us find out more about
it.
Effectively Create Your Classroom Content
Proper lesson planning is essential to the learning and teaching process. A
trained teacher is well on his / her way towards an excellent instructional
experience. The production of interesting lessons requires a tremendous amount
of time and energy. You must be committed, as a new teacher, to invest the
requisite time in this endeavor.
It is important to remember that the best-prepared lesson is useless, if there is
no proof of interesting execution procedures, along with effective management
of the classroom techniques. A wide body of work is available relating to the
creation and delivery of lessons and the importance of the management of
classrooms. They are skills that need to be researched, tailored to your specific
style, applied in a teacher/learning environment, and reviewed and constantly
updated as needed. Consistency is of the utmost importance when developing a
management program for classrooms.
Grade an Assignment
You can enter grades in the Assignments grading tool, along with your teaching
assistants. Every grader requires an Education account with G Suite.
After returning a work, work file ownership transfers back to the student. Then,
students can see their reviews and ratings.
The default denominator for the degree is 100. You can alter it to any number
greater than zero. You can also change the grade denominator at any time, but
only unreturned assignments are affected by that adjustment. Assignments
returned except their original denominator.
Without a mark, you will return one task. However, if you use Assignments LTI,
, the LMS cannot differentiate between ungraded assignments and unsubmitted
assignments.
Follow the steps in your Assignment edition.
If you are using Assignments next to an LMS, follow the steps below.
Go to c.google.com .
Click Caption .
Click the submission of the student.
Join the grade below Degree . Your score is saved as a draft.
To grade another task, press the down arrow next to the name of the subject, and
select another subject.
When using Assignments LTI in an LMS, do the following:
Go to the LMS .
Click on Attribution Open in Assignments .
Click the submission of the student.
Join the grade below Degree . Your score is saved as a draft.
To grade another task, press the down arrow next to the name of the subject, and
select another course.
Add Data For The Class
The first thing to do is to find a name for it, for easy identification of users,
whenever they launch the platform.
Utilize the field segment to distinguish between several classes of similar type.
Lots of teachers utilize the field for many class projects and periods. It is
optional.
The subject allows users to select from its lists or input your own.
After creating a class, add students.

Teachers can roll out a code for joining the class. It is one of the fastest ways to
get users into your class because by showing the code, users can sign into the
platform easily. Select + , and tap Join The Class ; attach the join code, and
you will find yourself inside the class.
Teachers can also get users into the class through the use of email. It is an
excellent alternative if you do not hold a physical class, whereby students have
to attend in-person. To perform this task, select the People tab on top, and tap
the Invite Students. Teachers can send direct emails to students or in groups.
Customize the Classroom
After creating a class, it will be an empty one; users need to become creative.
Tap the selected theme, and it will launch the header photos collections, where
users can add photos to accessorize the class.
Users can upload contents to accessorize the class, by images of a class or
anything that looks like a class. A lot of teachers prefer the header image option,
containing vital information and different graphics for fun.
Utilize The Platform In Everyday Class
After setting up the class and adding students, the class is now functioning, and
students can perform several tasks as well as take instructions from the teachers.
There are few other things that you need to do in the class, which are discussed
further.
Add Announcements
It is an excellent way to interact with the class, and update them with the most
recent information. Teachers post them into the class Stream, but it does not
associate with the grades. Proceed to the Stream and select Share Anything
With The Class . Now users can add text if they want the text in the
announcement. Users can also include different types of files from the Drive or
the computer system; they can post it, or create a schedule for posting ot a later
date.
Organize Topics For The Class
Classes can have several units, chapters and objects. If this is the case with your
class, you can classify the questions and homework by topic, to keep it all
organized.
Below the homework, select Create button and include a topic for it. Then,
anytime you create homework or want to announce something to the group, you
can add the topic to the content.
Removing A Student From A Class
After removing a student from a class, their work will remain in the class
folders and their posts will still be found in the class Stream. If you need, you
can go ahead and delete their posts. Given below are the steps that you can

A new window will appear, asking you to confirm whether you want to unmute
the student. Click Unmute . The process will complete successfully.
Adding or Removing Classwork Page
The Classwork page is very important in Google Classroom. It is in this page
that you can create assignments, materials and questions, and then group them
based on topics. Your class may not have the Classwork page. However, if you
are the primary teacher, it is possible for you to add this page to a class.
After creating a Classwork page, you can:

Create questions and assignments under one place, and group them
based on topics.
Add class materials, then group them based on topics.
Change how the topics, and the items within a topics, are ordered.
The following happens after removing the Classwork page:

You will not be able to create materials.

You as well as your students will not be able to access the materials
that you have added to the Classwork page.
Questions and assignments will be moved to the Stream page.
Questions and assignments will be created on Stream page.
Note that after the removal of a Classwork page from a class, the primary
teacher will be able to add it back. Once it has been added, students will be
able to access materials.
The following steps will help you to add a Classwork page to your class:
First, log into your Google Classroom account.
Identify the class, and click to open it.
Move to the bottom of the class page, and click the help icon (? ).

The new window will popup. In this window, choose the Add Classwork page.
Confirm this by clicking Update .
To remove a Classwork page from a class, follow these steps:
First, log into your Google Classroom account.
Identify the class, and click to open it.
Move to the bottom of the class page and click the help icon (? ).
Chose Remove Classwork page.
Click Remove Classwork Page to confirm the removal.

You now know how to add and remove the Classwork page in Google
Classroom.
Viewing an Archived Class
Once the term ends, the teacher may decide to archive a class. After archiving a
class, it will be moved to another area within Classroom.
Note that once a class has been archived, you will not be able to see it on the
homepage for your classes. This means that you can remove the classes that you
do not use anymore, making it easy for you to manage the classes homepage.
However, it is still possible for you to view a class that has been archived
together with its materials. However, you are only allowed to view the class
without removing or submitting anything to it.
The following steps will help you view an archived class:
First, log into your Google Classroom account.
Move to the top left corner of the screen, and click the Menu button.
Scroll to the bottom of the window that shows up, and click Archived Classes .
You will be taken to a new page with the list of all classes that have been
archived. Identify the class you need to view, and click to open it.
The class will be opened, and you will be able to view it as well as its details.
However, there is not much you can do to an archived class. Neither can you
submit nothing to it nor can you remove anything. Only the teachers are allowed
to archive or delete a class.
Unenrolling from a Class
At the end of the term, you may need to unenroll yourself from a class you are
done with to keep your classes homepage organized. If the teacher archives the
class, you will no longer see it. However, they may fail to do this, prompting
you to act on it. After unenrolling from a class, you will not be able to see it in
the Classes page of your account after signing in. However, it will still be
possible for you to access the files of the class from the Google Drive.
To unenroll for a class, follow the steps given below:
First, log into your Google Classroom account.
Click the Menu button, then choose Classes .
You will be taken to a list of classes you are currently enrolled into.
Inside the class card, click More (the three-lined button) for the class you need
to unenroll from.
You will be presented with a number of options. From these options, choose
Unenroll .
Confirm this by clicking Unenroll again.
You will then be unenrolled from the class.

Return Assignment
If an assignment is returned, control of the assignment file is transferred back to
the student. Students may have their thoughts and feedback presented.
A copy of the task returned is saved to your Google Drive. You also have a
copy of the graded assignment to use as proof of plagiarism in case a student
disputes their degree, for accreditation purposes, or even if the student changes
the original assignment, or deletes it, the assignment copy is secure.
The student receives an email that notifies them about ranking the task. The
email has a link to see the assignments/graded work. The student can see the
ranking, remarks on the margins, and general feedback.
When the student receives the graded assignment, they may either respond to
feedback from individual margins or review and resubmit their paper. The
student may begin discussions or conclude comments. Initial comments from the
professor transfer the returned assignment to their copy.
Modifying Or Deleting An External Share Password
Once an external share password has been set, it cannot be displayed, but it can
be modified or deleted.
To do so, follow the steps to share the collection or resource as previously, and
you will see a list of registered external shares. Click on the corresponding
Share ID or Edit link . You can either type a new password (or delete it
entirely from the password field) before clicking Save.
Resources and collections can be shared on social media channels using the
icons given under the column Social Media . At the moment, links to Resource
Space can be shared through Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn.
These links can be cached by modifying the value of social media links
contained in config.default.php

Chapter 17: Google Forms for Multiple Choice and

Fill-in-the-blank Assignments
Google Forms
Most of us are familiar with Google tools like Drive and Docs, but those are not
the only free tools the company has, that can be handy for teachers. If you are not
familiar with Google Forms, you might be surprised by all the ways you can
utilize them in your Classroom to encourage collaboration, gather information
about your students, and speed up your assessment process.
It is much easier to use Google Forms with Classroom than it used to be. When
you make a post, you can attach a form using the Google Drive option. Students,
with whom you share the post, will be automatically linked to a live version of
the orm. The teacher’s interface will also offer a link to view the results of the
form in a convenient Google Sheet.
You will need to create your form first before you make the post on Classroom.
You can do this straight through Google Drive by clicking on the New button,
then choosing the More menu (three-dotted button), and look for Form . To
navigate directly, you can instead go to forms.google.com . When you create a
form; you have the option of using either multiple choice or open-ended answer
formats. Enter your questions and save it, then navigate back to the Classroom
interface.
You will be able to link to the form you have created in the attachments option,
under the Google Drive icon. Unlike other attachments, you will not be able to
view or edit the form directly in Classroom. After the form is posted, clicking
on it will open the editing screen for teachers. This will open the form, to be
filled out for students.

Once a student has filled out the form, it will be marked as done in their
assignment list automatically, if the form is the only file in the assignment. If
there are also other documents or links, the student will need to manually mark
the assignment as ‘finished’, by clicking in the lower right corner.
As students answer the quiz, teachers will be able to see all of their answers in
one place on a searchable and sortable spreadsheet. You can then filter the
results to see one student’s answers, or all the students’ answers to a particular
question, giving you an easier and deeper insight into the results.
Weekly Check-Ins
Getting one-on-one time with the teacher can be a rare and valuable thing in a
child’s education. There are often twenty or more students vying for the
teacher’s attention during a class; more timid students can easily get lost in the
mix. A digital classroom offers you a quick, easy way to interact with all of
your students individually.
Weekly check-ins are once a week assignment where each student gets a chance
to voice a concern, suggest an idea, or ask a question, and get quick, private
feedback from the teacher. You can make this happen during class time or spend
one lunch period each week at your computer instead, ready to interact with
your students—whatever works best for your classroom environment. This can
be very beneficial for the teacher, as well, letting you tweak your future lessons
accordingly to be more effective.
You can use a Google Form for the weekly check-in if you find that to be
easiest, but that does not always give you the best forum for addressing each
student’s concerns. Setting it up as an assignment copied to each student, is
usually an easier way to go.

Chapter 18: Keeping Parents in the Loop
Classroom for Parents
It can be hard to find ways that parents can become more involved in the
educational process. While there are always report cards and parent-teacher
conferences to give them a glimpse into their student’s academic life, keeping
parents in the loop on the student’s week to week progress is a responsibility
that more often falls to the student himself, for better or worse.
While parents and guardians cannot create logins to view student work
directly on the Google Classroom portal, the email summary feature is an
easy way to make sure parents are getting all the information on how their
child is performing in school. It makes it easy for the parent to choose his or
her own level of involvement too, and you can synch the system with Google
Calendar to add upcoming events and important due dates directly to the
calendar.
Inviting a parent or guardian to receive email summaries follows the same
process as inviting students to the class. Any administrator or teacher in the
class can send the invitation. Simply enter the parent’s email address and
associate it with their student, then send the invite. The parent will have 120
days to accept the invitation, and will only need to have a Google account to
edit the summary settings. The invitation can be sent to any email address.
Once the parent has accepted the invitation, they will receive a confirmation
email, as will their child and the teacher who sent the invitation.
The weekly summary provides a lot of useful information. It will include any
missing work that is late and has not been turned in by the time the email is
sent. It will also include information on any approaching due dates, along
with an overview of the class activity for the week, such as assignments
posted, questions recently asked, or announcements that have been made.
Parents can choose to receive the email summary daily or weekly. If they
choose daily intervals, the time frame of upcoming due dates will be limited
to those occurring in the next few days. Parents can also unsubscribe from the
summaries at any point, if they decide they would rather not receive them.
A quick summary of activity delivered automatically to the parent’s inbox, is
for many teachers, the perfect solution to the problem of how to keep parents
in the loop on Classroom developments. Parents typically find the reports
succinct and easy to interpret, letting them receive information only when it
is relevant. If there is no activity to report for a given day or week, no
summary will be sent.
Communicating with parents and guardians is one of the key highlights of
Google Classroom. However, how is it done? Well, you are about to find out.
Here, we will dive further into how parents can benefit from this with
teachers through the communication with parents and guardians,
Sending Announcements
One of the keyways to communicate with students in an effective manner, and
you can also send these to parents as well by pressing the settings option and
being able to communicate to parents. Teachers can use this as a discussion
option, or even share helpful resources for students to benefit from, which is
great if you want to utilize this for parents to work with.
However, teachers can also be kept in the loop and one of the key things to
consider is trying to communicate with parents and guardians through email
summaries. These are something you can email to the parents, giving them a
chance to opt in for that. The emails are used to help parents understand what
students are doing, as well as any announcements on future work that may
happen in the future. Parents want to be kept in the loop when it comes to the
future of their children, so this is one of the best ways to do so.
Parent Notifications
Now, if you have parents that are super worried about their children’s
activities, you can enable parent notifications. This is similar to what was
said before, but what you do, is you go to the students area, and then choose
to invite the guardians of selected students. From there, any email address
their parents or guardians have will be put there. This way, parents can get
any summaries of class activity, and this will also include missing work that
students may be dealing with. Parents can choose whether they want to get
daily or weekly summaries. Many times, weekly should suffice, but if the
student tends to have issues, then maybe a daily summary might be good for
the time being.
Once the email is linked however, do make sure that you realize that parents
and guardians will have it fully available to anyone in the district or domain,
which may be why some people do not want that. You can also opt out of this
by going to the Include the class option, and choosing Switch it off if you do
not want to have that on.
Google Form Parent Teacher Conferences
With the advent of new technology and Google Classroom, one thing that has
changed are parent teacher conferences.
Google forms can be done to make copies, and from there, you will send this
to others. From the copies, you can send these to the parents and guardians.
From there, they can choose when they want to come in to see the teacher for
a conference.
If you have ever had to deal with choosing when a guardian will come into
the Classroom, this is a good way to fix that. The form is simple, you just put
the name and contact info, and from there, you can choose the time. It also
prevents loss of the papers and such when a parent gets a simple email and
the chance to choose the time that is best fit.
The coolest part is that this is linked to your google calendar, so you do not
have to worry about forgetting the meeting or anything, which makes it easier
for parents.
But, if you want to do this on a form alone, you can always send out the form
to the email addresses, and every time you get a response, you put this in an
excel sheet. You can read through, look at the different aspects, and figure out
what you should discuss with the families. This is a great way to figure out
how to run parent teacher conferences., since you will not have to worry
about the awkward conversations that you may have otherwise with the
families.
You as a teacher can set up the intervals, based on what times work for the
families, and many times, you can do these conferences. Faster if you do
have, a form that is discussed what parents want to focus on and any issues
with the child. It does streamline this, and many times, it does create a
difference, since it will help students meet the goals, and parents will be
more engaged. It allows for you as a teacher to address the concerns directly
with the students and the parents, and creates a bit of an idea of how to
prepare. But, the one downside to this is, it may require a lot of preparation
ahead of time; but it is not much more than what it would take otherwise.
Communicating with parents is quite important, in that it can help them better
understand what is going on, and in turn create a better, more integrative
atmosphere. It is a different way to teach, and teachers actually end up getting
more parent participation than ever before. If you want parents involved, this
is ultimately the way to do it, since they will be more informed of what is
happening with their kid, and be able to change anything as needed, or talk to
the kid whenever they need to.
Chapter 19: Customizing to Your Subject
Google Classroom smoothes out the administration of understudy work —
reporting, allotting, gathering, reviewing, giving criticism, and returning. It
has positively spared numerous instructors' long periods of work.
Without proper work processes and procedures, reviewing computerized
work can be cumbersome. Google Classroom makes working with
understudy progressively productive — yet if you see how Classroom
functions and how to use it to further your potential benefit. Some of the time,
a couple of quick tips can have a significant effect.
Here are ten hints to help you use Google Classroom more viably and
productively:
1. Use move to top to draw important, older material out into the open : This
hastens a task, declaration, or question to the highest point of the class
Stream. Use this if understudies have not handed a task over, or if you need to
help them to remember an upcoming deadline.
2. Email everybody in a class in the Understudies tab : When you click the
Understudies tab, click the checkboxes of the most important of your
understudies, to feature them. Click Activities and Email . This is either for
pointing out uncommon topics you need to convey to understudies, or for
longer, structured correspondence.
3. Use the correct type of comment : There are a few types of comments you
can leave understudies in the Classroom. Realizing how everyone functions
can make you progressively proficient and viable.
4. Including class remarks : Do this by adding a statement in your group
Stream ‘outwardly’ of a task or declaration. This will offer the comment
evident to the whole class (significant if it is a response to an inquiry
anybody may have).
5. Including private remarks : Do this by reviewing understudy results and
tapping on an individual understudy. On the right, where you can see
understudy entries, the remark bar at the base includes a remark that specifies
what the understudy can see (important if it has sensitive evaluation or input
data).
6. Use statements to share ‘present’ connections : Statements put content in
your classroom Stream without making a task understudies must turn in. Use
them to give understudies significant connections, documents/records, and
recordings they will require at that moment. (if it is something they will
frequently need, add that asset to the About tab.)
7. Use the console rather than the mouse: Console orders beat moving and
tapping the mouse unfailingly. The best one in Google Classroom.
8. Reuse posts: Try not to reproduce assignments, statements, or questions
that are like those you have just made. Click on the + button in the bottom
right and select Reuse Post . Choose a task, declaration, or question you
have made previously. You can change and update it before you repost it.
When you reuse a post, you can even decide to make new duplicates of the
considerable number of connections you used previously.
9. Evaluate everything in one place : Click on the three lines button in the
upper left side of the Classroom and select Work at the top. Here, you will
find the entire assignments for the whole class in one place. Work your way
down the rundown and jump on everything in one place.
10. Getting an email from Classroom : Do you invest a lot of energy erasing
email warnings from Classroom and wish you could turn them off? Click on
the three lines button in the upper left side of the Classroom and pick
Settings at the base. There is a checkbox where you can turn off email
notifications. (If you have it turned it off and wish you would get messages,
this is how you turn them back on as well)
11. Get thoughts from others : Teachers that are now utilizing Google
Classroom hang out in lots of online networks where you can peruse their
posts and pose inquiries.
12. Get the highlights you genuinely need in the Classroom : Do you have a
proposal for another Google Classroom include? Is there something you can
do, however, wish you could do it more straightforward? This type of
criticism is what the Google Classroom group longs for from educators.
Click on the ? button in the base left of the screen and pick Send Feedback .
According to the Google Classroom colleague that conversed with my
Google Teacher Academy group in December 2014, somebody from their
group peruses every criticism sent that way. It is how they have made a
significant number of the substantial element changes to Google Classroom.
Also, the more well known a component demand is, the more probable it
will be executed. So, send criticism and send it frequently!
Conclusion
Setting up a classroom is easy, and it does not increase the teacher’s
headache or stress, as they try to figure out how to use this application.
Invites to collaborate, share information, and give announcements and
assignments are done easily and quickly.
Students also get immense benefits from Google Classroom as they can seek
advice, get updates, connect to a teacher, and collaborate with their friends
on assignments.
Google Classroom is a simple and paperless solution for anyone who wants
to start a class but does not want to go through the hassle of printing and
distributing information. This makes managing students work easier in a
much more efficient manner, all in one place, with only a few clicks.
The next step is to get set up with working on Google Classroom. You will
need to set it up so that you can either join the domain that your administer
has set up, or you can set up your own domain and get started that way. Once
the application has been processed and you get the Google Education App,
you will then be able to set up your very own class in no time.
Classroom gives the students many ways to work together. Teachers will
encourage online discussions inside the Classroom between students and
build group projects. Many digital natives are familiar with technology, and
are more likely to use technology to take control of their learning. Classroom
offers many ways to make learning collaborative and interactive.
It gives teachers the opportunity to separate tasks, to incorporate videos and
web pages into lessons, and to create group tasks for collaboration.
Google Classroom provides a new and different interactive platform
between students and teachers, by way of two-way private feedback,
commentary, as well as discussion on a document. It may sound like the
teacher is then available 24/7 to answer questions that the student may have,
but scheduling and teaching hours can be established, so that students can
connect to the teachers at these particular times. Turning in assignments
through Google Classroom also gives the students the major advantage of
finding solutions or completing the assignments in various ways.
This means it cuts the traditional and conventional method of learning costs,
and allows the student to dig deep into their creativity, to solve tasks
according to their passions, interest, and needs. Differentiating tasks also
allows the teacher to ensure that students, who are falling behind, will be
able to catch up with their classmates with extra coaching, feedback, and
assistance, whenever possible.
