Parts of Speech
In English, there are eight different parts of speech. In this chapter, we will cover
only four: Verbs, Nouns, Adverbs, Adjectives.
1
Verbs
Verbs express action or a state of being. It is because of the former that verbs are
often called "action verbs," but non-action verbs can be used to represent a state of
being, need, sense, or preference.
Examples:
1. Ira loves painting so she spends some of her pocket money to buy palettes.
2. Sophie desperately needs tennis shoes for participating in interschool tennis
competition next month.
3. They sing happily in Lina’s house because she has a complete karaoke
machine.

Nouns
Nouns name a person, place, thing idea, or quality. They can act as the subject or the
object of a sentence.
Examples:
1. Rumah Rajut is a store at SuperMall Karawaci for those who likes knitting.
2. Her anger explodes when she sees her favourite book is torn.
3. Dian and Vera likes to have Zoom meetings.

Adverbs
Adverbs modify or describe a verb, adjective, or another adverb or word group. This
modification provides information relating to time, place, manner, cause, degree, or
circumstance.

2
Examples:

1. From Food Junction (FJ), Sara

walks very slowly to Building F.

2. Food at FJ is quite yummy, don't

you think?

Adjectives
Adjectives modify or describe a noun. These words ascribe an attribute to the noun being
modified.
Examples:
1. The sleepy bear hibernated all winter.
2. It's a tiring process to master classical guitar but if you love it, you’ll enjoy it.

11
EXAMPLES
Easy Examples of Phrases
Let's start with a sentence that has no phrases and then build some in.
 Janet eats cakes daily.

12
(This sentence has no phrases. All of the parts of the sentence are single words.)
 My cousin Janet eats cakes daily.
(Now we have a phrase. It's a three-word phrase functioning as the subject of this
sentence. Note that the phrase itself does not contain its own subject and verb.)
 My cousin Janet eats cakes during the week.
(We've added another phrase. This one also has three words, but it is functioning as
an adverb.)
 My cousin Janet was eating cakes during the week.
(We've added another phrase. This one has two words. It is a multi-word verb.)
 My cousin Janet was eating cream cakes from the bakery during the week.
(We've added another phrase. This one has five words. It is functioning as a direct
object in this sentence.)

The examples above prove that phrases function as one single unit within a
sentence. But, let's look a little closer.

Common Types of Phrase

Here are some examples of the common types of phrase.

Adjective Phrase

13
An adjective phrase is a group of words headed by an adjective that modifies a
noun.

 She had extremely blue eyes.

(This adjective phrase describes the noun eyes. The adjective "blue" heads
the adjective phrase.)

 She wore very expensive shoes.

(This adjective phrase describes (or "modifies" as grammarians say) the noun
"shoes." The adjective "expensive" heads the adjective phrase.)

 Sarah was hostile towards me.

(This adjective phrase modifies the noun "Sarah." The adjective "hostile"
heads the adjective phrase. Like a normal adjective, an adjective phrase can
be used before the noun it's modifying (as in the first two examples) or
afterwards (as here).)

14
Adverbial Phrase
An adverbial phrase is a group of words that functions as an adverb.
