What’s in it?
HOW DOES ONE ENGAGE IN REFLECTION?
Reflection requires a person to be willing to examine one’s thoughts, feelings,
and actions and to learn more about one’s life and experiences. Reflection means
leveraging the power of our minds to ponder intentionally about ideas or sensations.
This is a unique human capacity driven by our ability to store, retrieve and correlate
stored memories and information.

These are the key steps required to engage in reflection:

1- Intention. The purpose to think about a concrete idea;
2) Context. The identification of aspects relevant to this idea;
3) Creation. The generation of new ideas;
4) Conclusion. The identification of outcomes and value of the
reflection process.
In engaging reflection, the human person possesses self-awareness which
refers to the awareness of oneself as an active participant in reality. A person is
aware not only of his or her surroundings or reality but also of himself or herself as a
participant in this reality.
The sense of SELF enables a person to look within himself or herself and
experience interiority. Self-awareness also enables a person to reach out to other
persons and establish meaningful relationship with them. Another trait that defines a
human person is self-determination. This refers to the awareness of one’s actions
and the notion that oneself is the source of an action. Self-determination is brought
about by the person’s free will or the capability to act willfully and control one’s
actions. Self-determination also brings about the awareness of consequence that
every action will have results or effects.
In addition, making reflection/looking back your previous undertaking/s allows
you the opportunity to think more deeply. It may even help you make your decisions
wiser choices and improve your spending habits in the future. Thus, when we reflect,
we can judge whether our actions or decisions are reasonable or not.

WHAT ARE THE PRACTICAL USES OF PHILOSOPHY IN OUR LIVES?

Philosophy has an important place in our lives. Engaging in philosophical reflection
leads to the development of beneficial skills that can apply in everyday situations.
● enables person to engage in critical analysis and interpretation of concepts,
definitions, arguments, and problems.
● improves problem – solving and decision making
● good communicator who can clearly and adequately present his or her
ideas
● it equips us with wisdom
● contribute to self- development
5
Philosophy belongs in the lives of everyone. It helps us solve our
problems -mundane or abstract, and it helps us make better decisions by
developing our critical thinking (very important in the age of disinformation).
