QUIZ ONE (15 minutes) date: 14-0802008

DESIGN OF STEEL AND PRESTRESSED CONCRETE STRUCTURES

1. Define “structural steel”.

Man-made metal- 95% or more iron – small amounts of elements derived from raw
materials and elements added to improve properties – Carbon: 1-2 %, Smaller amounts of
MANGANESE AND NICKEL.

C- 1 to 2%, Smaller amounts of Manganese and Nickel

2. Advantages of structural steel.

1.High strength to weight ratio
2. Uniformity
3. Elasticity
4. Ductility
5. Addition to existing structures
Time saving, Flexibility in fabrication, Re-use on demolition

3. Disadvantages of structural steel

1. Maintenance cost
2. Fire proofing
3. Susceptibility to buckling
4. Fatigue
5. Corrosion
4. Important characteristics of structural steel
1. Yield stress
2. Ultimate stress
3. Modulus of elasticity
4. Percentage elongation
5. Coefficient of thermal expansion

5. For the following grades of steel, write the value of the design strength.

Grade Design strength in

N/mm2
55 450
50 355
43 275

6. The three important factors in design

1. Safety
2.Serviceability
3.Economy
7. Give examples of the following limit states
Ultimate limit state Serviceability limit states
1. Strength 1. Deflection
2. Stability 2. Vibration
3. Fracture 3. Wind induced oscillation
4. Brittle fracture 4. Durability

8. Define the following:

1. Design Load used in working stress method:

Design Load is the working load

2. Material Strength used in working stress method:

Material strength = Yield strength /Factor of safety

3. Design Load used in limit state method:

Design load = Characteristic load x Load factor

4. Material Strength used in Limit state method:

Material strength = Characteristic Strength / Material strength factor

Characteristic Strength = Mean strength – 1.64 x Standard deviation

9. What is characteristic load? How do you calculate it?

Characteristic load is the representation of the real load, which is defined as the load
with 95% probability of not being exceeded throughout its lifetime.

Characteristic Load = Average load + 1.64 x Standard deviation

10. What is a load combination? Give examples.

Loads on any structure must be arranged in design so that the maximum force or moment
is achieved at the point being considered. Such combinations are called as load
combinations.

Example: DL+LL
DL + WL
DL +WL+LL
