 Definition: Nuclear family is a family consisting of two

parents and their children, but not including aunts, uncles,

grandparents, etc
 Characteristic of a nuclear family:
1. Free from the absolute control of the eldest family member
2. Requires that the parents take complete responsibility for
running the home and taking care of the family
3. Requires that the parents take complete responsibility for
running the home and taking care of the family
4. Expects that after the children get married, they leave their
parent's home and move into a separate dwelling to establish
another nuclear family
 In the past couple of decades, more and more families
around the world have turned into nuclear families. Some of
the reasons for this trend are:
1. The demand for an improved lifestyle: People want to earn
more, seek financial stability, and lead a better life. All this is
more easily achieved in a nuclear family setup where people
make independent lifestyle choices for their family.
2. The demand for freedom: Couples in a nuclear family enjoy
the freedom of living on their own, by their own rules, and
without interference from family other members.
3. The demand to maintain harmony: Sharing the living space
with a large number of family members can often lead to
conflicts, misunderstandings, and unpleasant situations.
Several couples would rather live separately to avoid
multiple conflicts and undercurrents in family relationships.
 Nuclear family in Vietnam:
1. The nuclear family is the most common family form in
vietnam. According to a survey of three regions including
cities, plain (delta) and midland-highland: nuclear families
account for 78% (cities, 65%; plain, 81.7% and midland -
highland areas, 80.6%).
2. The population is large but the family scale is shrinking.
Previously, each family had an average of 5.2 people, but
now there are only 3.8 people. Couples with fewer children
are economically better off, but in our society, there is a
group of people "two less, one more", which means few
children, lack of daily time to nurture, patenting children, but
only... a lot of money.
3. Among the small-scale families in Hanoi surveyed, more
than 30% of people living in the inner Hanoi said they have
no time or very little time to care of,educate their children's.
 Avantages of the nuclear family
1. Privacy: The couple can get their privacy in their own
house in nuclear families whereas you cannot get your
privacy in a extended family. People can live their own
way and can do whatever they want to. There are no rules
setted by the elders to follow.
2. Financial stability:This is one of the strongest points in
the nuclear family. One can be financially strong because
of limited expenses. There is less number of people in the
nuclear family and hence less expenses. You cannot have
a strong financial stability if you are the only person who
is earning in a extended family.
3. Avoidance of stress and discomfort: Some people are
emotional. They can’t stand/ tolerate/handle/suffer from
any kind of fun that is on them and in the extended
family, one need to have much high patience. But, nuclear
families has an advantage that if you live in the company
of those with whom you are very comfortable then there is
no need to take any stress and your discomfort also get
vanished in a moment.
4. Better Condition of Women:In nuclear families the
condition of woman is better than extended families. She
gets enough time to care of her children. She also gets
time to plan and manage her house according to her own
idea. There is no interference of elders. Her husband can
also devote/pay/give more attention to the wife in nuclear
family.
 Disadvantages of the nuclear family
1. The Realities of burnout/exhaustion:Some of
survey suggests family members, especially mothers, have
a tendency to burn out/exhaust from attempts to satisfy
every person's needs. The focus on children can be
overwhelming and leave little room for parents to take
care of themselves. Without help from extended family,
parents may need to take off work to care for sick
children. The struggle to balance the demands of work,
family and friendships without outside assistance leads to
stress, depression, anxiety or other problems.
2. Small Support System: Emergency situations, such as an
accident or even illness, can leave small nuclear families
in crisis. An articles analysis points out how extended
family structures offer built-in help for these situation. In
a nuclear family where both parents work and have young
children, the ability to meet all expectations and needs
exclusively within the family unit is not always possible.
Multi-generational households offer assistance as needed.
3. Self-Centered Worldview: The traditional nuclear family
is child-centered. This means the focus is on the
immediate family, children in particular, for all facets of
life. The nulear family attempts to meet all the member’s
demands and places children into important position.
This viewpoint can lead children to selfish tendencies and
thinking. It can also create a narrow worldview where the
greater good of society gets little consideration.
4. Insecure For Old, Widow and Divorce:In nuclear family
widowed, old and divorce fare very much neglected. No
one in the family bothers to take care of them. Physically
and psychologically they feel insecure. Above all in
nuclear family children are socially, emotionally and
educational unstable. There is a chance of family breakage
in case of conflict between the compel.
 Conclsion:Still then everybody wants to go for a nuclear
family in the modern society because of its advantages which
certainly outnumber the disadvantages.
