Literature during the period of period of imitation

OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson the student should be able to:
1. Discuss about Literature during the period of period of imitation.
2. Perform Exercise.

INTRODUCTION
Period of Imitation (1910 – 1925) • 1919: the UP College Folio published the literary
compositions of the first Filipino writers in English. They were the pioneers in short story
writing. Short stories, novels and essays in English came to exist in this period.

The Period of Imitation (1910-1924)
Period of Imitation (1910-1924)-Writers during this period imitated American and British
models and styles, hence the period was named as the Period of Imitation.1919: UP
College Folio- Published literary compositions of the first Filipino writers in English.-
Pioneers in short story writing- Imitated American and British models which resulted in an
unnatural style, lacking vitality and spontaneity,-Some of the writers of this folio included
Fernando Maramag(the best editorial writer of the period) andJuan F. Salazar.Essays-
Noted Formal or Editorial essayist of the time were: Carlos P. Romulo, Jorge C. Bacobo,
Mauro Mendez, and Vicente Hilario.
What is an imitation in literature?
1 : an act or instance of imitating.
2 : something produced as a copy : counterfeit.
3 : a literary work designed to reproduce the style of another author.
4 : the repetition by one voice of a melody, phrase, or motive stated earlier in the
composition by a different voice.
What is imitation literary works?
Literary imitation can be thought about in a similar way. When someone imitates an
earlier text, they are not necessarily just taking words from that text. Indeed, the object of
literary imitation is usually not simply a sequence of words, but something much more
nebulous: a style, or a way of writing.

During this period, the Philippines is under the rule of the Americans

Writers of the UP College folio included Fernando Maramag (the best editorial writer of
this period), Juan F. Salazar, Jose M. Hernandez, Vicente del Fierro, and Francisco M.
Africa and Victoriano Yamzon. They pioneered in English poetry.
Noted essayists: Carlos P. Romulo, Jorge C. Bocobo, Mauro Mendez, and Vicente
Hilario. Their essays were truly scholarly characterized by sobriety, substance and
structure. They excelled in the serious essay, especially the editorial type.
Ignacio Manlapaz, Godefredo Rivera, Federico Mangahas, Francisco B. Icasiano,
Salvador P. Lopez, Jose Lansang and Amando G. Dayrit.
Introduced the informal essay, criticism and the journalistic column. They spiced their
work with humor, wit and satire.
Zoilo Galang
Galang was born on July 27, 1895 in the town of Bacolor, Pampanga during the later
years of the Spanish colonial era in the Philippines and was influenced by both Spanish
and American culture in his youth. He finished studies at the Pampanga High School. He
initially worked as a stenographer working in both Spanish and English languages.
Galang also pursued studies to pursue a career as a lawyer but there are no records to
indicate if he did finish his law studies
Author of A Child of Sorrow, which was the first novel (in the Philippines) in English,
published in 1921.He learned typing and stenography in English and Spanish all by
himself.

Paz Marquez Benitez
Author of Dead Stars, which stand out as a model of perfection in character delineation,
local color, plot and message.She was a teacher at the University of the Philippines,
where she taught short-story writing and became an influential figure to numerous Filipino
writers in the English language.

Fernando Mamuri Maramág
A poet and essayist. He was educated in the Philippine Normal School, and then
transferred to the University of the Philippines. He worked as teacher at the Instituto de
Manila (later University of Manila). He was also writer and editor at several magazines
(Rising Philippines, Citizen, Philippine National Weekly, Philippines Herald, and The
Tribune). He also served in the Publication Division of the Department of Justice, and
then transferred to the office of the President of the Senate under Manuel L. Quezon.
Notable works:

The World in a Train (the most famous essay from ‘From My Nipa Hut)
a story told about a past event remembered by the narrator.
