Subject Matter: SCIENCE 8 (8- SSC, 8- HUMILITY, 8- FAITH, 8- CHARITY)
Topic: FORMS Of ENERGY - LIGHT (Module 3 – Quarter 1)/ Week 5

Rainbows are created just like the colors of light appeared in previous activity. A prism separates the white light into the different colors of
light. With the different refractive indices of the colors of light, bending is also different for each of the colors of light. In this lesson, you will know
which color bend the most and which color bend the least.
The module is divided into two lessons, namely:
 Lesson 1 – Light
 Lesson 2 – Characteristics of Light

After going through this lesson, you should be able to:

 Define Light
 Describe the characteristics of light
 Infer that white light is made of different colors of light.

MULTIPLE CHOICE: Choose the letter of the BEST answer.

______1. Which has the greatest energy among the colors in a rainbow?
A. green B. orange C. red D. violet
______2. Among the following colors in a rainbow, which has the least energy?
A. green B. red C. violet D. yellow
______3. Which property of light enables the formation of a rainbow? I. color separation II. dispersion III. reflection IV. refraction
A. I and III B. II, III, and IV C. I, III and IV D. I, II, III, IV
______4. Red is the least bent among the seven colors because it has the ___________.

What Is It

LESSON 1: LIGHT
1 | SCIENCE 8 (8- SSC, 8- HUMILITY, 8- FAITH, 8- CHARITY)
Light is composed of colors of different frequencies and wavelength and the arrangement of colors of light shows the order of the color’s
corresponding energy. ROYGBIV is the only part of the spectrum that can be seen by the naked eye. A ray of white light that passes through a
prism is dispersed into the visible spectrum. Red light is refracted the least, and purple light is refracted the most. his is because the speed of the
various wavelengths in glass is different, slowest for violet light and fastest for red light. Red light has the lowest frequency and energy but the
longest wavelength compare to other visible spectrum. Violet light has the highest frequency and energy but the shortest wavelength compare to
other visible spectrum. Using the diagram and the electromagnetic spectrum, you can see that vio- let color has the shortest wavelength but highest
frequency and the greatest amount of energy while red color has the longest wavelength, lowest frequency and least amount of energy. Can you tell
the relationship between frequency and wavelength of light ? Or the relationship between wavelength and the amount of energy?
The electromagnetic spectrum is important to astronomers because celestial objects emit waves in all the different regions of
the spectrum. Visible light is very small fraction of the visible spectrum. At homes, light carries information in many ways. Cell phones use light to
send and receive calls and messages. Wireless routers use light to send pictures of your family in Facebook from the internet to your computer. Car
radios use light to receive music from nearby radio stations. Even in nature, light carries many kinds of information. Telescopes are light collectors,
and everything we know from Hubble is because of light. Since we are not able to travel to a star or take samples from a faraway galaxy, we must
depend on electromagnetic radiation — light — to carry information to us from distant objects in space. The Hubble Space Telescope can view
objects in more than just visible light, including ultraviolet, visible and infrared light. These observations enable astron- omers to determine certain
physical characteristics of objects, such as their tem- perature, composition and velocity

3 waves behaviors
 Reflection- Is the change direction of wave
front at an interfere between two different
media so that the wave front returns into
the medium from which it originates.

 Refraction- When it passes from a fast

medium to a slow medium bends the
light ray toward the normal boundary
between two media.

 Dispersion- Is the property by which light is

spread out according to its color as it
passes through an object

FORMATION OF RAIBOW
When was the last time you have seen a rainbow? How were the seven
colors arranged? Rainbows occur when light rays coming from the sun penetrate
the raindrops after the rain. Many years back, Isaac Newton observed a similar
phenomenon. Because Newton was fascinated with light and colors, he did
simple experiment. He made his room dark, and then created a small hole in his
window shutter to allow only a beam of sunlight to penetrate. Then he brought
out his prism and placed it directly along the path of the light beam. He saw a
beautiful spectrum color.
A rainbow is caused by sunlight and atmospheric conditions. Light
enters a water droplet, slowing down and bending as it goes from air to denser
water. The light reflects off the inside of the droplet, separating into its
component wavelengths--or colors. When light exits the droplet, it makes
a rainbow. It is formed due to dispersion of sunlight through water droplets.
Water droplets act as small prism through which sunlight enters it refracts and
disperses and then gets reflected internally which creates a rainbow in the sky
which is seen to observer's eye.

Characteristics of light

1. Light is an electromagnetic wave.

2. Light travels in a straight line.
3. Light is a transverse wave, and does not need any medium to travel. Light can travel through vaccum. Its speed through  vaccum is
3 × 108 m/s.
4. The velocity of light changes when it travels from one medium to another.
5. The wavelength (λ) of light changes when it goes from one medium to another.
6. The frequency (f) of the light wave remains the same in all media.
7. Light gets reflected back from polished surfaces, such as mirrors, polished metal surfaces, etc.
8. Light undergoes refraction (bending) when it travels from one transparent medium to another.
9. Light does not need a material medium to travel, that is, it can travel through a vacuum too. Scientists have assigned a value of
299, 792, 458 m/s to the speed of light in vacuum.
10. According to current scientific theories, no material particle can travel at a speed greater than that of light in vacuum.

2 | SCIENCE 8 (8- SSC, 8- HUMILITY, 8- FAITH, 8- CHARITY)

 Light travels in a straight line.
