Introduction to the Study

This chapter consists of the following parts: (1) Background of the Study, (2) Statement of the
Problem and the Hypotheses, (3) Definition of Terms, (4) and Significance of the Study.

Part One, Background of the Study, introduces the rationale of the study and the main
purpose for conducting the study.

Part Two, Statement of the Problem and the Hypotheses, enumerates the research
problem and the corresponding hypothetical guesses on the possible result.

Part Three, Definition of Terms, conceptually and operationally defines the important terms and
concepts in order to facilitate understanding of this study.

Part Four, Significance of the Study, names the specific individuals and groups who are likely to
benefit from the results and the findings of the study; likewise the manner by which they may
find the study useful and helpful is discussed.

Background of the Study

The researchers describe how the new normal learning modality effects the mental health of
every grade 10 students. According to a World Health Organization (WHO) research, one out of
every four people in the world will experience mental health issues at some point in their lives,
and 450 million people globally have a mental health condition (WHO, 2001). A new educational
system has been implemented, particularly during this pandemic. Students and teachers
changed their social and intellectual capacity to cope up with education through online/modular
learning. An online/modular learning was said to be the one of the social challenges students
are experiencing nowadays and that they'll have to face. Mental illnesses place a significant
financial cost on those who suffer from it. According to research, mental illness can result in
missed work days, decreased productivity, financial strain due to treatment costs, family and
caregiver stress, and even death (Bronsard et al., 2016; Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention, 2011). As a student in some kind of online/modular learning was very difficult to
adapt to because students were not trained previously through scenarios or exercises. The
online/modular learning program was considered by students to be much more stressful than
traditional classes. It's really crucial to find a solution to this problem since the mental health of
every student who is trying to adapt to the new

normal learning modality is at concern, and it is critical that every student's mental health is in
good condition. This will bridge the gap between online and modular

learning by reducing students' activities, making output easier, and keeping all resources at
home so that they do not have to leave the house to buy during this pandemic so that students
don't have to stress too much about all of the things they have to complete and all of the
materials they'll need.

Objective of the study

The main objective of this study is to identify how the new normal learning modality
affects the mental health of every grade 10 student. We want to achieve how the mental health
of students in coping up with the lessons in this new normal learning modality.

Specifically, this study sought to answer the following questions:

1.) How do you handle your mental health in this online learning modality?

2.) How do you handle your mental health in this modular learning modality?

Definition of Terms

For clarity, the following words were given conceptual and operational meanings as used in this
study.

Effects is change which is a result or consequence of an action or other cause.

(Oxford Dictionary)

In this study, effects refer to the impact of the new normal learning modality on the
mental health of Grade 10 students.

New normal is a previously unfamiliar or a typical situation that has become standard,
usual, or expected (lexico.com Definition, 2017).

In this study, new normal refers to the new situation that students are facing today as
the result of the COVID19 pandemic.

Learning modality They are sometimes inaccurately referred to as “learning styles”

which implies that each learner has a “style” of learning that should be maximized in all learning
Situations. And the four widely accepted learning modalities (or modes) are known by the
acronym VARK: Visual, Auditory, Reading/Writing, and Kinesthetic. (Wikipedia)

In this study, learning modality refers to the learning styles of education in this pandemic
that has had the worst effect on the mental health of grade 10 students.

Student is primarily a person enrolled in a school or other educational institution and

who is under learning with goals of acquiring knowledge, developing professions and achieving
employment at desired field. (Wikipedia)

In this study, students refers to the respondents of the study, who are Grade 10
students.

Mental health, defined by the World Health Organization, is "a state of well-being in
which the individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life,
can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her
community". (Wikipedia)

In this study, mental health refers to the mental state of grade 10 students in the new
normal learning modality, the effect of the pandemic.

Significance of the study

This study shall benefit the following:

Students. This study may help students to be aware of their mental state. Also, this shall
inform them that the new normal learning modality greatly affects their mental health. And the
result of this study will give them some ideas on how to deal with their mental health issues.

Teachers. This study may help teachers to determine what teaching methods they should
improve to reduce the mental health issues experienced by their students. Furthermore, the
findings of this study should increase teachers' awareness of how to develop their lessons.

Parents. This study results may be helpful to parents so that they can guide their children to
cope with stress in online classes or in modular classes and provide them with better resources
while they study. The findings of this study shall further inform parents about how the new
normal learning system affects the mental health of their children.

Future researchers. This work might be beneficial for future researchers. This may be helpful
to them while they conduct related studies, and therefore, this can be used as a tool and/or a
reference in their research work.

Research Design and Methodology

Research Design

We used Survey Research. Survey Research is defined as the process of conducting research using
surveys that researchers send to survey respondents. The data collected from surveys is then
statistically analyzed to draw meaningful research conclusions. We used this research because at
this time of pandemic we could not interview our respondents and it is the most convenient research
we could do and also this was instructed by our teachers to use.

Respondents

This study had 20 students of Iloilo National High School. The respondents came from the
grade 20 council from different specializations. This covered the different learning styles that
were offered by the school. This research was a mix of students from modular, online, and
blended learning. Most of the respondents are randomly selected from different specializations

Instruments

In this study, we conducted a survey using google forms. Our Google forms consist of 10
questions. A few questions that are in our Google Questionnaire are essay-type questions. One
of the questions that were included in the google drive was: How do you find coping tasks
allotted when at unexpected announcements being pilled up at the same time and/or deadline?

Student A Responded that she just gave up and continue with life. Another student has
responded that he does the activity and schoolwork in an order in which he would be able to
finish it on time. Most of the students would have time management and a few are stress when
deadlines are coming.

In the google form, we included a question in which they would have to rate their feeling in the
first 4 months of quarantine the result is
sad 4 students

Slightly sad 3 students

Moderately 11 students

Happy 2 students

Very happy 0 students

Data Gathering Procedure

We started gathering data by making the google form that students would answer. The next
step before we started giving them out to students we tested the google form its working and
how it would look like. We also directed the result of the google form to a google sheet which
incode the answers of the respondents. We then started sending the link to our google form.
They were distributed by the members in messenger. they would send the link to people they
knew that are part of the grade 10 council. Then the google form would record their responses
and direct them to our google sheet and there we have gathered our data.

Data Analysis Procedure

We started by reading the respondent’s answers and study the differences and similarities
that they have. Also, the google form has provided us with charts and graphs of the answers of
the respondents which are very convenient for us. Having the pie graphs that were provided by
easily identifying the percentage of students that picked the specific answer. We could analyze
our research easily because of those tools.

Results and Discussion

Data charts show that most of the student youths are at the mean level of stress of the
entire group and when grouped mostly based on academic responses due to the new normal
learning modality, personal circumstances, and psychological circumstances.

A. Results

Based on data collected, 100% of 20 students mostly state that they are struggling from the
new normal learning modality in the midst of a pandemic. Findings further imply that logical
reasoning and transforming knowledge are not still fully developed among the Grade 10
learners. Perhaps this may be due to the difficulty of concentration, both can lead to racing
thoughts, poor judgment, and impaired memory. On the emotional spectrum, depression,
agitation, and the inability to relax can result, leading to procrastination for some students, and
mental health self-medication due to their responsibilities.

This part reports the level adjustments from random Grade 10 learners as well as their level
of exposure and improvement to their on-hand mental health status.

Table 1 below refers to the chart findings based from Grade 10 learners shows of conditions
of their mental health within the midst of pandemic:

Table 1:

Student’s all-over conditions through different categories: Very happy: null set of students,
Happy: 2 (10%), Moderate condition: 11 (55%), Slightly sad: 3 (15%), and definitely Sad: 4
(20%)

Table 2 shows the causing rate of these common factors such as school work, anxiety
attacks, traumatic incidence, family problem, and other peer/friendship conditions; 70% of
them have experienced mental breakdowns however still 65% only developed their mental
health status and management.

Table 2:

However, by managing their aims to pursue coping with such struggling situations and
self-esteem, students upon 65% have developed any mental health problems within even the
midst of pandemic.

B. Discussions/Findings

According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI 2021), many students feel
fear when first recognizing a mental health issue within themselves, as they might not be
able to figure out where it came from. Students who previously felt nervous during public
speaking but suddenly experience overwhelming panic understandably struggle to figure out
what changed. Factors such as significant life changes, society, family, academic pressure,
self-esteem, and peers/relationship bond can all contribute to changes in mental health.

Chapter 4

Summary, Conclusions, Recommendations

Conclusions

In view of the findings, the following conclusions were drawn:

1. The students have experienced different levels of stress and anxiety during the new
normal modalities. Based on the collected data, it shows that most students did not
understand the activity because of unclear instructions and, in modular learning,
students found it difficult to obtain correct answers, especially since the material lack
certain information about a certain topic.

2. Students get overwhelmed with the amount of workload that they have to answer in a
limited duration of time. They particularly found it hard to pass activities, assessments,
and outputs with limited deadlines.

3. Regardless of their modality, both modular and online classes had experienced difficulty
in their own modalities. Both classes had difficulty in time management but persistently
carried on with their school work.

Recommendations

1. The results of the study can be used across the educational continuum with an emphasis
about mental health of the Grade 10 learners. Schools and in general the Department of
Education need to minimize the given activities in order to help avoid mental issues such as
anxiety and depression.

2.The Department of Education, the schools and teachers, provides various media, print and
non-print materials for the learners to use. If a learner can't understand a certain topic, they
have references to be guided with.

3. Schools and teachers are encourage to give the materials in advance so students may access
it earlier. The earlier the students take their materials for learning, the less they would get
stressed out.

4. Some learners may develop suicidal thoughts because of their mental issues. We encourage
parents and teachers to be more approachable towards the youth. An approachable educator or
guardian will help the student feel at ease and able to speak out.

5. Further researches may be conducted about the mental issues. These studies may go
in-depth on what specific platform or media greatly ease the mental issues of the youth.

Summary

This research was conducted in order to give awareness to students mental health and their
adaptation of the current new normal and the new teaching modality as well as to tell them
how or why this affects their mental health. This research also gives awareness to the teachers
so that they would be able to add some modifications or changes in the way they teach in order
for both students and teachers mental health to be safe and under control. Primary aim of this
research is to gain the attention of the students, teachers, parents, peers, etc. so that they
would be aware of the fact that these new changes like the change in modality, the classes, the
lessons and other things affect the mental health which should be given attention and thought
to. Questions that need answering are like “Why does this affect a person’s mental health?” Or
“Why should this be a concern or taken into account? “ Just like the research stated, giving
awareness of a problem in mental health is helpful and saves the mentality and the health of
every person during this change of life, environment and well-being. All of the necessary actions
and study will be taken into consideration during this research and will be filled with various
sources from other people regarding their mental health and issues. As we tackled about the
issues of this new modality of teaching we also have come to a point in considering the benefits
students and teachers will obtain once they have controlled their mental health which means
this research does not only give awareness to students, teachers, parents and peers alike but to
ILOILO NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
REGULAR CLASS
Luna St., La Paz, Iloilo City

also remind them on the pros or benefits you would acquire once this issue is resolve making it
more vital and necessary to give attention and concern to thus making this research necessary
and important. In addition set’s as a reminder to countless people of the sudden change
everyone is experiencing and how every person’s behavioral pattern changes and the various
effects on a person especially the stress and effect to a person's mental health of too much
workload, activities and difficult processing of the lessons and learnings.

All of the answers and sentences that are presented in this research were obtained through a
survey from all of the students that belonged to the online learning modality. The questions on
the survey tackles a student's current predicament and their well-being during the first class of
the new normal. Some were confused and adjusting while some were stressed due to the
sudden change. We collected all the data from the students of online modality starting with our
friends and scattered to the rest of their classmates. We even included special programs in
partaking of the survey as our main instrument for data collecting. We analyzed all the data we
gathered using charts and statistics as well as a few calculations from the exact number of
students participating to the favorable percentage of their answers and choices dictating the
most common issue and solution.

Based on our findings, research and conducting of surveys we have come to a conclusion that
there are a total of 11 students that feels moderately about this new change and how it affects
their mental health it also means that the these 11 students are stuck between the effects of
mental health and they’re ability to catch up and progress in this new normal. We have also
noticed that there are more students who were feeling sad during the start of the new modality
than those who were happy, Therefore it is known that more students are affected by this
change of modality and learning than those who enjoy it concluding that there is greater
chances that students feelings of this new modality is progressing a change or showing signs
that their mental health is slowly affecting due to the escalation of works, activities and projects.
In addition, based on the survey, the findings and the statistics it is favorable and undeniably
obvious that the odds are in favor in concluding that this new normal, new modality and new
type of learning is a danger and affects a students progress in learning and their mental health.
Furthermore it gives more reason for students, teachers, parents and peers to give their full
attention regarding this matter. This concern’s all of the peoples mentality and state of mind it
is important to look in to and solve the problem for all of us to have a peace of mind and
comfort in order to stop this issue from deteriorating and cause further problems in the future it
is imperious to oppose this idea and not look into it especially when it has reason to do and the
statistics to prove of its significance.

Based on the gathered data upon the series frequency of breakdown of our youth from
their experiences and being rated from 1 to 5 scales. The researchers have come up with
the following computations using mean, median, mode, and standard deviation by the
bases of table below.

The data chart above shows that among 20 student respondents, the average (mean) of youth’s

stressor experiences come up with the total of 3.45 scale; mean and median that indicates the most

scaled frequency that at the scale of 4; and the standard deviation about 1.32 that indicates estimated

minimal scale. This meant to say that an established method to identify students who may have

difficulties with anxiety or depression is through systematic screening of the school population. These

stressors can cause mental health challenges for anyone and can cause acute symptoms to appear for

people who may experience preexisting mental health challenges.

As a result of this screening, the researchers compiled solutions and adjustments that

needed additional support and connected for every youth with the appropriate school and

community mental health resources. If results of the screening had not indicated specific mental

health concerns, a school-based team would probe further to identify.
