CHAPTER 1
1.0 ABSRACT

I was given an assignment to make a report about building services proposal. This report must
discuss about 5 types of buildings system included Fire Fighting System, Electrical System,
Mechanical System, Gas System and Telecommunication System. I required to draw at least one
sketch for every system that I choose for the building. The objectives of the report are to gain more
knowledge about building system while help us to more understand about this topic. It also helps
me to expend comprehension about what I study in class about the latest system that used in a
building. Last but not least, by making this report, it helps me to develop my report writing skill that
can use while in job atmosphere.
CHAPTER 2

2.1.1 WHAT IS FIRE PROTECTION SYSTEM?

Fire protection system is the effort to avoid the spread and elimination of large unwanted fires in
houses, automobiles, forests, etc. To defend lives, property and the community, a firefighter
suppresses fires. The most important of the building services is possibly a fire protection system, as
its purpose is to protect human life and property, strictly in that order. It is made up of three basic
parts:

 A large store of water in tanks, called fire storage tanks, either underground or on top of the
building.
 A specialised pumping system.
 A large network of pipes ending in either hydrants or sprinklers.

There are few purposes of the operation of fire protecting system:

 To allow for the safe escape of the building occupants

 To prevent the spread of smoke and fire in the building
 To reduce the risk of collapse for the emergency services
 To prevent or to reduce the amount of damage to the building structure.

The fire protection system is divided into two, which is passive and active.

2.1.2 ACTIVE FIRE PROTECTION SYSTEM

Active Fire Protection (AFP) is a group of systems that involve some amount of action or motion In
order to operate effectively in the event of a fire. Actions may be controlled manually, such as a fire
extinguisher or automatic, such as a sprinkler, but some amount of action is needed either way.
Active fire protection includes fire and smoke alarm systems, sprinkler systems, and fire
extinguishers as well as firefighters. To detect if there is fire or smoke in a building, fire and smoke
alarm systems are used. Sprinkler systems are used to help slow the growth and spread of the fire.
Fire extinguishers and firefighters are used to help put out the fire altogether.

a) Smoke detectors

A smoke detector is an electronic fire-protection system that as a key indicator of fire, automatically
detects the presence of smoke and sounds an alarm to building occupants. As part of a building's
central fire alarm system, commercial and industrial smoke alarms send a signal to a fire alarm
control panel. By law, all workplaces must have a device for smoke detection. Smoke detectors may
use either optically (photoelectric) or by physical process (ionization), or both methods.
b) Hose reel system

Hose reel system for the occupant to use during the early stages of a fire. Its length usually provided
with up to 45m of reinforced rubber hose (to cover 800m2 floor area per installations). By opening a
valve, which allows the water to flow through the hose, manual systems are triggered. A pump will
immediately kick in on water pressure loss and ensuring steady flow of water. The hose reel should
be able to discharge 0.4litre/second at a distance 6m from the end of the nozzle.

They are permanently linked to a water supply and consist of a main turn on/off valve, a hose guide,
and a hose with a nozzle. The control nozzle attached to the end of the hose enables the operator to
control the direction and flow of water to the fire. For proper operation, proper installation,
maintenance and replacement of fire hose reels is paramount.

c)

2.1.3 PASSIVE FIRE PROTECTION SYSTEM

Passive Fire Protection (PFP) is a group of systems using fire-resistance rated walls and floors to
compartmentalize a building. Compartmentalizing the building into smaller parts from one room to
the next helps to delay or avoid the spread of fire or smoke. Passive fire protection system helps to
minimize the amount of damage done to a building and allows more evacuation time to its building.
Moreover, passive systems are used to control the growth of fire through material control or by
providing a physical barrier to the movement of fire or smoke. Passive fire protection system often
fixed in walls, floors, ceilings, beams, columns, and shaft enclosures that are designed to a
prescribed fire resistance rating.
