A. Directions: Answer the following questions based on your understanding.

1. What was the “Cry of Balintawak” or “Cry of Pugadlawin”? What did it signify?

 The “Cry of Pugadlawin” refers to the beginning of the Philippine revolution against Spanish government.
The “Cry” also referred to the tearing up of the cedula and the first clash between Katipuneros the civil guard
(guardia civil). It signifies the termination of the Pilipinos of their loyalty to spain and the start of fighting for
freedom and independence.

2. What were the reasons of Antonio Luna’s assassination?

 General Antonio Luna was known for being arrogant and short tempered person. Before his death, General
Luna and President Aguinaldo were rivals for the leadership of the Pilipinos. At his time of service, the
president and the whole cabinet opposed him for wanting the independence of the Philippines from the
Spanish alliance. General Luna was also known for his stubborn and dictorial manners and this later on led to
his assassination. President Aguinaldo ordered the assassination of Luna, he ordered General Otis to initiate
the killing of Luna, with the help of Agiunaldo’s men that had once been insulted and shamed by Luna.

3. Do you affirm or deny Rizal’s retraction? Support your answer.

 I believe that Rizal’s retraction letter was purposely created by the Spaniards just to justify and validate
themselves. Rizal was known for his political writings and novels that awakened and inspired the Philippine
Revolution, that soon led to his captivity, and later on his execution. The said retraction letter was created
night before his execution, and if he did wrote this letter, maybe he simply retracted because he is in doubt
and fear that he knew that he is about to die and hoping to change his fate. Writing this letter won’t affect
how I see him, He has a lot of contribution for our country. When you read his works, you will see how
strong he expressed his national consciousness against the Spanish government and the Catholic Church. He
most likely to argue that his God was not like the God of Catholic church, that the only genuine faith was the
“blind faith” and not about the relics or saint statues and offerings. So Rizal writing a letter about accepting
the Catholic religion and withdrawing his statements must be only a “deal” between him and the Spaniards in
exchange of his freedom. Add to this, if Rizal really wrote this letter before his execution, they would have
shown it to the Spanish authorities to stop Rizal’s execution. So either the Spanish authorities have already
decided to kill Rizal no matter what, or there was NO RETRACTION LETTER written in the first place.
Only the Catholic church makes a big deal about it, because they want to insult us and lure us that even our
“Hero” believed in them. I firmly believe that he did not write the retraction letter. And if he did write it, I
think he was just lured to do it in exchange of ‘something’.

B. Directions: on a short bond paper submit a reaction paper composed of 150-300 words on the following topic

LUNA’S ASSASSINATION: A REACTION PAPER

___________________________________________________________

General Antonio Luna, A national hero, leader, short-tempered and fearless Pilipino general who fought
against the American soldiers. He is known for his stubborn and dictorial manners, and this later led to his assassination.
Before his death, Luna was a terror disciplinarian but also a great leader. He constructed effective battle strategies and
fought for the country. Because of his strong principles, he always ends up arguing with the whole cabinet for opposing
his morals.

General Luna deserves the utmost respect. He doesn’t deserve the fate that his countrymen created. We lost a great leader
because of coward Pilipinos, they were so scared to lose themselves that they rather put an end in someone else’s life. In
this society, we focus on finding someone who can lead, someone who can carry the burden of society. But when we do,
we tend to be the first person who drags them down. General Antonio Luna only wants us to be faithful and to fight for
our country; even if it cause our safety and cause our lives. But unfortunately he was betrayed and killed by his own
countrymen, those who supposed to support him and his goals, end up killing him mercilessly. That foolish and unmindful
act only resulted to the fall of the Philippines to hands of America. If they didn’t kill Luna, maybe we don’t have to
struggle in the hands of the americans.

Luna once said “Mayroon tayong mas malaking kaaway kaysa sa mga amerikano, ang sarili natin.”I realized that
General Luna was never the problem; it’s the people who surround him. No wonder why we’ve struggled to achieve
freedom. And I also realized that the burden of society and social responsibilities is not in the hands of a single person,
every individual does have the power to contribute.
