Fluid Mechanics Question and solutions

Water steadily flows from a nozzle into a large circular tank of diameter, 𝑫 as shown in Figure 1. Given that the
fluid velocity at point (1), 𝑽𝟏 = 𝟐𝒈
√ , where ℎ is the height of fluid exiting into the horizontal jet stream of
diameter, 𝒅. The fluid exits the large tank through another jet stream at point (3) with diameter, 𝒋.

i. By applying relevant fluid dynamic equations, show that

𝒋𝟐 𝒅𝟐
𝑽𝟐 = ( ) . 𝑽𝟑 = ( ) . √𝟐𝒈𝒉
𝑫 𝑫
Solution:

Since the fluid level within the tank remains at 3m. This is possible only when Q is discharge at 1, 2
and 3 which will be equal, therefore;

We know from previous knowledge that flow rate (Q) equal to area of cross-section(m¿¿ 2)¿ times
flow speed (V)

Using Q1=Q2 =Q 3

by simplifying we get; d 2 V 1=D2 V 2 = j 2 V 3……Equ1

From equation 1 we can see that,

ii. Given that 𝑫 = 𝟓 𝒎, 𝒋 = 𝟎. 𝟐𝟓 𝒎, show that 𝑽𝟑 .

Solution: Using Bernoulli’s equation we know that P1=¿ P =0 ¿ 2

From the figure below; h2 =3 m∧h3=1 m

∴ g ( 3−1 ) =
( V 23−V 22 )

∴ V3≅2√ g

iii. Given that 𝒋 = 𝟑/𝟐𝒅, show that 𝑽𝟑 = 𝟒/𝟗𝑽𝟏;

Earlier in equation 1 we can recall that

Note: The flowrate, Q, entering the large tank is such that the fluid level within it remains at 3 𝑚.
