The Legend of Tangkuban Perahu

Once, there was a kingdom in Priangan


Land. Lived a happy family. They were a father
in form of dog,his name is Tumang, a mother
which was called is Dayang Sumbi, and a child
which was called Sangkuriang.
One day, Dayang Sumbi asked her son to
go hunting with his lovely dog, Tumang. After
hunting all day, Sangkuriang began desperate and
worried because he hunted no deer. Then he
thought to shot his own dog. Then he took the
dog liver and carried home. Soon Dayang Sumbi found out that it was not deer lever but
Tumang's, his own dog. So, She was very angry and hit Sangkuriang's head. In that incident,
Sangkuriang got wounded and scar then cast away from their home.
Years go bye, Sangkuriang had travel many places and finally arrived at a village. He met a
beautiful woman and felt in love with her. When they were discussing their wedding plans,
The woman looked at the wound in Sangkuriang's head. It matched to her son's wound who
had left severall years earlier. Soon she realized that she felt in love with her own son.
She couldn't marry him but how to say it. Then, she found the way. She needed a lake
and a boat for celebrating their wedding day. Sangkuriang had to make them in one night. He
built a lake. With a dawn just moment away and the boat was almost complete. Dayang
Sumbi had to stop it. Then, she lit up the eastern horizon with flashes of light. It made the
cock crowed for a new day.
Sangkuriang failed to marry her. She was very angry and kicked the boat. It felt over
and became the mountain of Tangkuban Perahu Bandung.

The Legend Of Banyuwangi

Once upon a time, there was a local ruler named King Sulahkromo. The king had a
Prime Minister named Raden Sidopekso. The Prime Minister had a wife named Sri Tanjung.
She was so beautiful that the king wanted her to be his wife.
One day, the King sent his Prime Minister to a long mission. While the Prime
Minister was  away, the King tried to get Sri Tanjung. However he failed. He was very angry.
Thus, when Sidopekso went back, the King told him that his wife was unfaithful to him. The
Prime Minister was very angry with his wife. Sri Tanjung said that it was not true. However,
Sidopekso said that he would kill her.
He brought her to the river bank. Before he kill her and threw her into the river, she
said that her innocence would be proven After Sidopekso killed her, he threw her dead body
into the dirty river.
The river immediately became clean and began to spread a wonderful fragrance.
Sidopekso said, "Banyu...Wangi... Banyuwangi". This means "fragrant water". Banyuwangi
was born from the proof of noble and sacred love.

Once upon a time, there was a
little poor boy came into a little village.
He was very hungry and weak. He
knocked at every door and asked for some
food, but nobody cared about him.
Nobody wanted to help the little boy.
Finally, a generous woman helped
him. She gave him shelter and a meal.
When the boy wanted to leave, this old
woman gave him a “lesung”, a big
wooden mortar for pounding rice. She
reminded him, “please remember, if there
is a flood you must save yourself.
Use this “lesung” as a boat”. The “lesung” was happy and thanked the old woman.The
little boy continued his journey. While he was passing through the village, he saw many
people gathering on the field. The boy came closer and saw a stick stuck in the ground.
People challenged each other to pull out that stick. Everybody tried, but nobody succeeded.
“Can I try?” asked the little boy. The crowd laughed mockingly. The boy wanted to try his
luck so he stepped forward and pulled out the stick. He could do it very easily. Everybody
was dumbfounded.
Suddenly, from the hole left by stick, water spouted out. It did not stop until it flooded
the village. And no one was saved from the water except the little boy and the generous old
woman who gave him shelter and meal. As she told him, he used the “lesung” as a boat and
picked up the old woman. The whole village became a huge lake. It is now known as Rawa
Pening Lake in Salatiga, Central Java, Indonesia.

The Legend of Surabaya

A long time ago, there were two animals, Sura and Baya. Sura was the name of a
shark and Baya was a crocodile. They lived in a sea.
Once Sura and Baya were looking for some food. Suddenly, Baya saw a goat.
“Yummy, this is my lunch,” said Baya. “No way! This is my lunch. You are greedy” said
Sura. Then they fought for the goat. After several hours, they were very tired.
Feeling tired of fighting, they lived in the different places. Sura lived in the water and
Baya lived in the land. The border was the beach, so they would never fight again.
One day, Sura went to the land and looked for some food in the river. He was very
hungry and there was not much food in the sea. Baya was very angry when he knew that Sura
broke the promise.
They fought again. They both hit each other. Sura bit Baya's tail. Baya did the same
thing to Sura. He bit very hard until Sura finally gave up and Awent back to the sea. Baya
was happy.

The Legend Of Prambanan Temple

Once, there was a beautiful
Javanese princess whose name was
Rara Jonggrang. Rara Jonggrang
whose beauty was very famous in the
land was the daughter of Prabu Baka,
and evil king.
One day, a handsome young
man with super natural power named
Bandung Bondowoso defatted and
killed Prabu Baka. On seeing
Princess Rara Jonggrang’s beauty,
Bandung Bondowoso fell in love
wither and wantted to marry her.
Meanwhile, Princess Rara jonggrang felt sad due to her death father. She did not want
to marry Bandung because he had killed her father. But she was also afraid of Bandung. So to
refuse politely, she made a condition. "I will marry you but you

have to build one thousand temples in one night as a wedding gift" requested Rara
Jonggrang. Bandung Bondowoso agreed with the condition. Helped by the spirit of the
demons, Bandung Bondowoso started building the temples. Approaching midnight, the work
would nearly be done. Rara Jonggrang knew and thought, "What shall I do? Bandung
Bondowoso is smarter than I. I would lose against Bandung."
Suddenly she got an idea. She woke up all the women in the palace and ordered them
to make the noisy sounds of grinding rice so that the rooster thought at had already been
dawn. Bandung Bondowoso got frustrated because he failed completing the thousandth
temple.
"The Princess has deceived me!" Following his anger, he cursed Roro Jonggrang, "You have
been cheated. Now, the thousandth temple is you!"
At once, the Princess turned into a statue. knowing this, Bandung Bondowoso
regretted and he went away into a farm land. From then people called the temple Prambanan
Temple and the Princess statue Rara Jonggrang statue

The Legend of Malin Kundang
Once upon a time, lived a
diligent and smart boy named Malin
Kundang. He lived in the seashore with
his old mother. They lived harmonious
and quite happy although lived in the
poorness.

One day, a big ship moored to


the beach near Malin’s village. People
from the big ship asked peoples to join
and work in their ship because they
would go to the cross island. Malin Kundang was interesting, he wanted to join with the big
ship because he wanted to improve life quality of  his family. But, The mother worried to
Malin, so Malin didn’t get the permission from mother. Then, Malin still kept his arguments
up until his mother said yes. Finally, he joined and sailed with big ship.

After five years later, Malin Kundang became rich Merchant because he success on
the Inter- Island trading. After that, he married with beautiful daughter from another rich
merchant. Then, he came back to his village with his beautiful wife. His wife didn’t know
Malin’s real family and descent. Hearing this good news, Malin’s mother ran quickly
approached Malin with happiness. She brought a plate of Bika cake because Malin very loved
it. But, what she get, Malin acted never know who she is. Malin didn’t recognize that old
woman as his poor mother, and then he kicked the Bika cake which brought by Malin’s
mother until broke in pieces.

The mother was very broken heart because Malin seditious with she, the woman who
had growth and born him to the world. Then, his mother said that if he was not her malin, he
would go with happiness. But, if he was truly her Malin, she cursed Malin to be a stone.

Suddenly, the big ship of Malin Kundang was vacillated by a Big rain and storm. It
made all of his crew in the big ship tossed aside out. Malin realized that was his mistake that
seditious his mother. Thunder came to his big ship and the ship broke in many pieces. Several
pieces come to the malin’s village. Finally, her mother found Malin Kundang bowed down
and he became a stone.
The Legend Of Sangkuriang
 A long time ago, the ancient land of Sunda was ruled
by a king and a queen who had but a single daughter.
Her name was Dayang Sumbi. She was beautiful and
clever but also pampered and spoiled. One day as she

was weaving in her pavilion, she became moody and distracted, which caused her to keep
dropping her shuttle on the floor. Once when it fell she exclaimed she would marry the one
who gave it back to her. At that very moment her dog Tumang, a demigod possessing magic
powers, came up to her with the shuttle in his mouth. Dayang Sumbi had to marry him.
They lived happily together, and Dayang Sumbi gave birth to a baby boy, human in
appearance but endowed with his father’s magic powers. She named him Sangkuriang. As the
boy grew up, he was always guarded by the faithful dog Tumang, whom he knew only as a
companion and not as his father, Sangkuriang became handsome and brave.One day his
mother asked him to go hunting with the dog and bring her venison for a feast. After hunting
all day withoutsuccess, Sangkuriang worried about facing his mother empty-handed.
Desperate, he took an arrow and shot the dog. He returned home and handed over the meat to
his pleased mother.
Soon after the feast, however, Dayang Sumbi questioned her son about the absence of
Tumang. At first he evaded herqueries but finally told her what had happened. She was
horrified and struck her son so hard on the temple that he
collapsed. For that, the old king banished his daughter from the court and she was
made to roam around the kingdom. Sangkuriang recovered with a large scar on his temple,
and he too left the court to wander about the world.
Years later, Sangkuriang met a beautiful woman and instantly fell in love with her. It
was his own mother-they did not recognize each other. He pro¬posed to her and she agreed to
marry him. On the day before the wedding, as she was caressing her fiancee’s hair, Dayang
Sumbi detected the scar on the temple. Horror struck her, for she was about to marry her own
son, Sang¬kuriang. Without revealing the whole truth to him, she tried unsuccessfully to
dissuade him.When Dayang Sumbi saw that he was about to accomplish what she had
thought impossi¬ble, she called on the gods to bring the sun up early and thwart Sangkuriang.
The cock crowed, the sun rose much earlier than usual, and Sangkuriang realized he
had been deceived. In a fit of furyhe cursed Dayang Sumbi and kicked the half-finished boat
back into the forest. There it lies upside down today, forming
the mountain Tangkuban Perahu (Upturned Boat). Not far away is the stump of the
tree Sangkuriang had felled, now called Bukit Tunggul. The dam Sangkuriang had built
caused the valley to become a lake, where both Sangkuriang andDayang Sumbi drowned
themselves. They were never heard of again.

The Story of Toba Lake

Once upon a time, there was a man who was living in north Sumatra. He lived in a
simple hut in a farming field. The did some gardening and fishing for his daily life.

One day, while the man was do fishing, he caught a big golden fish in his trap. It was
the biggest catch which he ever had in his life. Surprisingly, this fish turned into a beautiful
princess. He felt in love with her and proposed her to be his wife. She said; “Yes, but you
have to promise not to tell anyone about the secret that I was once a fish, otherwise there will
be a huge disaster”. The man made the deal and they got married, lived happily and had a
daughter.
Few years later, this daughter would help bringing lunch to her father out in the fields.
One day, his daughter was so hungry and she ate his father’s lunch. Unfortunately, he found
out and got furious, and shouted; “You damned daughter of a fish”. The daughter ran home
and asked her mother. The mother started crying, felt sad that her husband had broke his
promise.
Then she told her daughter to run up the hills because a huge disaster was about to
come. When her daughter left, she prayed. Soon there was a big earthquake followed by non-
stop pouring rain. The whole area got flooded and became Toba Lake. She turned into a fish
again and the man became the island of Samosir.

Pinokio

    Once upon a time, there was a puppeteer named


Geppetto. He really wanted a boy but his wife has
been died for a long time ago. One day, he had an idea.
He wanted to make a puppet so he would never felt
lonely again. He made a puppet all night without
resting. In the morning, finally he finished his work.

He named the puppet, Pinocchio. He played whole day with Pinocchio. However, he felt
lonely again because Pinocchio couldn't talk or walk by himself. In the middle of the night,
Geppetto prayed to the God. His wish was Pinocchio became a real boy, human. He thought
it on his mind in his dream.
In the next morning, he surprised. Pinocchio was alive. He really was happy. He
tough Pinocchio how to walk, how to speak, how to read etc. like a teacher. Pinocchio
learned fast. He entered an elementary school. One day, Pinocchio felt bored. So, he went
home late. Geppetto worried about him. When Pinocchio came to home, Geppetto asked him.
He said he was on school but he didn't. Suddenly, Pinocchio's nose grow longer. It meant that
Pinocchio lied.
The next day, Pinocchio got caught by thieves. The thieves was the owner of circus.
Pinocchio became a slave for the circus. He was famous because he was a talking puppet.
Geppetto worried him. Pinocchio didn't come home for 2 days. He found Pinocchio
everywhere. When he discovered the sea, big wave smashed him. He was on whale's stomach
when he awoke. He couldn't find the way out.
In different place, Pinocchio finally could get out from circus. He went to home but
Geppetto wasn't on there. He found Geppetto at sea. He had the same accident like Geppetto.
He met Geppetto in whale's stomach. They got out from its stomach by made a fire.
They went home back together. In the end, they lived happy forever after.

Alladin and The Magic Lamp


Once upon a time, there lived a handsome boy in
Baghdad. The name was Aladdin. He was a clever
boy, but he did not like to work.

One day Aladin’s mother sent him to the market


place to look for a job. In the market he met a
magician. The magician asked him to work together
with him. If Aladdin could do, he would get a lot of

gold coins and jewellery. The magician asked Aladdin to go inside the cave and find a
magical lamp there. He also gave a ring and said, “If you are in any trouble, rub this ring and
a genie will come to your rescue!”
   Aladdin went into the cave. Inside the cave, Aladdin was surprised by what he saw. Every
corner was full of gold and treasures. A few minutes later, he found the lamp and quickly
returned to the entrance of the cave. Aladdin called out, “Magician, I have found the lamp.”

“Excellent,” answered the magician.“Quick, pass it to me!”


Aladdin did not trust the magician so he said, “Not so fast Magician. You must help me out
of this cave first.”

The magician became very angry. When Aladdin was walking to the entrance, the
magician pushed a huge rock over the entrance of the cave and left Aladdin and the lamp
behind. Aladdin tried to move the rock all by himself, but it was too big and heavy, “Oh no! I
am trapped in the cave!” he cried.

Suddenly, he remembered the magic ring. He rubbed it with the palm of his hand. To
his surprise, a genie appeared before him and in a powerful voice said, “Master, I am the
Genie of the ring. How can I help you?”

Aladdin was frightened, but he soon found the courage to ask, “Could you please send
me back to my house?” In no time at all Aladdin was back home.

Aladdin took out the lamp. He wondered what would happen if he rubbed it. As
Aladdin was rubbing it, all of a sudden another enormous genie stood before him. The genie
of the lamp said, “Master, your wish is my command.” Aladdin was very excited and wished
for an enormous palace and bags full of gold.

One day, a beautiful princess was passing by Aladdin’s palace. She stopped to talk to
Aladdin and soon they became good friends. Before long, Aladdin and Jasmine fell in love
each other. She married Aladdin and lived happily.
