Activity No. 9 Equipment and Facilities used in Badminton

Describe the characteristics of different equipment and facilities.

1. Racket – The badminton racket is one of the most important tools that a player has in
the game. Badminton rackets are much lighter than most other sports rackets because
they are made of materials such as carbon fiber or lighter metals such as aluminum.
Racquet parts include head, throat, shaft and handle with a maximum length of 27.77
inches and a width of 9 inches. They are strings stretched across the paddle slot in a
checkerboard pattern, which act as the striking surface. The cost of badminton rackets
can vary greatly depending on whether they are purchased as part of a basic backyard
kit or as more expensive professional models.
2. Shuttlecock - The badminton shuttlecock, also referred to as a shuttle or birdie, acts
similarly to a ball in other racket sports. However, the layout of the birdie creates more
drag as it is propelled thru the air due to its feathered shape. The shuttlecock is made up
of a cone form with a difficult cork at its tip. Shuttlecocks can be made from a variety of
substances -- more luxurious models are surely made from feathers, and less high-
priced models are made from plastic feathers. The shuttle has 16 feathers connected to
the base and the length of the feathers levels between 2.44 and 2.75 inches.
3. Court - The Badminton Court must be a rectangle with 40mm broad lines, ideally white
or yellow in color. The dimensions of the badminton court are 13.4m long and 6.1m
wide.
- Rear court ;The player in the back court takes strokes from the back of the
court, striking the shuttle in a downward motion.
- Backline : do not shuttle through long two-seater service lines during service.
- Long Service Line, in Singles, ; The shuttlecock must be below your waist
while operating the shuttlecock.
- The Mid-Court : The area between the parallel lines on either side of the
badminton court is called the alley. This is also known as the third dish.
- Service-Court : Players may not touch the net at any time during play, either on
the racket or on any part of the body. Do not carry the handle or place it on a
racket.
- Short Service Line : Is there a line next to the net in front of the pitch? All
services, including doubles and singles, must cross this line to be considered
"in".
- Serving Court-Singles : It is surrounded by a short service line, a single side
line, a back border (also known as a single service line), and a center line. The
single service area is 12.24 m 2, see Figure 2.2. This is only slightly larger than
the double service area. Figure 2.1: Single badminton court seat.
- Serving Court-Doubles : It consists of a center line, a double side line (outside
line), a front service line, and a center back line (immediately before the full back
line). If the service is outside these lines, it is considered a service failure.
4. Posts - Is an important element of a professional badminton net, and the difference that
a good kit makes to the game is amazing. The badminton post is a twin vertical that
keeps the net stable and taut, creating a barrier for players to hit the shuttlecock.
5. Net - The badminton net is 2.5 feet deep and is located 5 feet above the net line from
the center of the badminton court. Most nets are made of vinyl mesh and have a leather
or cotton top. At the start of a badminton game, and whenever the server scores an even
number, the server provides a shuttle from the right side of the field to the opponent
player over the network. If the result is odd, the server will provide a shuttle over the net
from the left side of the pitch. When the server earns rallies and points, it will serve from
the other side of the field. Double badminton games are subject to the same service
rules as single badminton games, except that they pass a serve. Serves go one after
another to the players facing each other on the badminton court.
