Subject : ELECTIVE 101: Economics Statistics
Schechule : 9:30-11:00AM & 12:30 – 2:00 MW
Lesson/Topic : Handout No. 6 – Test of Hypothesis

Objectives:
At the end of the lesson student should be able to:
• translate a research question into a null and alternative hypotheses;
• describe Type I and Type II errors in context;

Discussion:

Formulating Hypotheses

Sample research problems.

1. Is there a significant difference on the performance of the respondents in different

workplace along Precinct and Patrol Base?
2. Is there a significant difference on the impact of KALAHI-CIDSSS Program to the
respondents in terms of institutional performance along community participation?
3. Is there a significant relationships between the profile of the local legislators and level of
capabilities in the legislative process?
4. Is there a significant relationship between the level of effectiveness and level of
concessionaires satisfaction in water service delivery of water districts?

Null Hypothesis
(hypothesis that were formulated with the hope that they be rejected)

1. There is no significant difference on the performance of the respondents in different

workplace along Precinct and Patrol Base?
2. There is no significant difference on the impact of KALAHI-CIDSSS Program to the
respondents in terms of institutional performance along community participation?
3. There is no significant relationships between the profile of the local legislators and level of
capabilities in the legislative process?
4. There is no significant relationship between the level of effectiveness and level of
concessionaires satisfaction in water service delivery of water districts?

Altetrnative Hypothesis
(Hypothesis that were accepted when the null hypothesis is rejected)

One-tailed test
(A test of any statistical hypothesis where the alternative is one sided)

Errors in hypothesis testing

Type I error: the error of rejecting Ho when it is true
Type II error: the error of failing to reject Ho when it is false.

Evaluation

1. Formulate the Null and alternative hypotheses.

a. Does critical thinking ability relate to student achievement?
b. Is there a significant difference between effects of verbal cues, rewards, and no
reinforcement for children with autism and their siblings?
c. Is there a significant difference in health of the respondents when they drink green
tea only or root beer only?
