Lack of job opportunities in the rural areas is forcing people to migrate to cities. Every big
city thus has a number of slums in it. Life in these slums is miserable. Write a letter in about
150 words to the editor of a national daily on how we can improve the living conditions in
these slums. You are Karan/Karuna, M114-NirmanVihar, Mall Road, Delhi

Dear sir

Subject – Improving the living condition in slums

Through the columns of your esteemed newspaper, I would like to draw the attention of the
municipal authorities of all the metro cities towards the miserable conditions of the people
living in slums. These slums are mostly inhabited by rural people who have migrated to
cities for their livelihood.

These migrants settle in slums which are unauthorised colonies in the heart of the city. The
place lacks basic amenities like piped water supply and sanitation. The inhabitants defecate
in open spaces. This leads to spread of various diseases like cholera, dysentery etc. Further,
the place is badly crowded with improper ventilation. The garbage piles are hardly ever
lifted. It is indeed shameful for any government to see their underprivileged community
living in such shameful condition. Poverty is no reason for being herded like cattle.

The living condition of these slums can be improved if the municipal authorities bring these
areas under their ambit. If villages can have their own Panchayat, then why not these
slums!A system needs to be formulated where there is constant check on the living
condition of the people living in the slums. Proper sanitation, regular health check-ups and
punctual garbage disposal are just a few measures that can lift up their living conditions.
I request you to publish this letter so that the concerned authorities take the imminent
actions to improve their living condition.

Yours truly
Karan
