Springbank Community High School

2021/2022
Chemistry 20

Significant Classroom Demographics:

- High expectations/achievement
- Highly involved parents
- High socio-economic status
Necessary Accommodations:
- Early notes
- Filled in notes available ahead of time
- Headphones and music to avoid distractions
- Short walk for brain break
- Draw/doodle to relieve anxiety
- Extra writing time for assessments
- Homework checklist
- Calculators
- Alternate space
- Flexible deadlines
Parent / Teacher Interview Dates:
October 25th/26th
Significant Contextual Variables:
- Car crash over summer that could affect various students
- No finals ever written by students; study habits need to be reinforced
- High expectations and pressure from parents on students, leading to stress and anxiety around
summative assessments

Vision and Rationale

The chemistry 20 course is designed to engage students in scientific exploration while gaining

a greater understanding of the relations within the world. This allows students to better interpret the
world around them through the skills and knowledge they learn within the class. Our course will meet

the Alberta Education Curricular Outcomes through outcomes-based assessment focusing on overall

student growth. The study of chemistry, reactions and relations will introduce students to the role of

science within our society and its capacity to meet our economic, social, and environmental needs and

responsibilities.

The focus for this class will allow students to develop technical skills related to labs along with

many soft skills such as communication, critical thinking, and collaboration. Practice booklets and labs

will cement concepts for students about chemical interaction with reinforcement from real life

experience. Previous perspectives and how our scientific models have shifted over modern history

build on the knowledge students have acquired in previous courses. I hope to encourage students to

explore scientific concepts to better understand themselves and relations within their world.
