1. How did Rizal view the role of an educated individual in society?

For Rizal, the mission of education is to elevate the country to the highest seat of
glory and to develop the people’s mentality. Since education is the foundation of society
and a prerequisite for social progress, Rizal claimed that only through education could the
country be saved from domination. Rizal views the role of an educated individual in
society as a transformative weapon. For him, education will lead you to a lot of
realizations. It will open your eyes to reality. During the Spanish Era, Rizal experienced
being bullied and criticized for being an Indio. Filipinos were called “Mangmang”,
“Walang alam”, “Bobo”, “Makasalanan”and “Inutil”. Filipinos were deprived of their
freedom and human rights, especially their rights to education. When he studied he made
a lot of realizations, he was able to learn a lot of things, he gathered some knowledge and
important information that he used in creating novels that lead to revolutions and
changes. Educated people viewed Rizal as a hope and a change. Remember that
knowledge is a powerful weapon in the world. Through education, it will help you to be
aware of multiple problems, you can formulate solutions to solve that problem, to put an
end to the country's social problems, be free from a colonial mindset and education will
make everything impossible possible. It will lead you to a better future.

2. Aside from the works mentioned in the discussion, what other works of Rizal mentioned
or showed the importance of education?
Aside from Memorias de un Estudiante de Manila and El Filibusterismo, the
value of education was also demonstrated by Por la Educasion Recibe Lustre la Patria
and A la Juventud Filipina. Rizal underlines the importance of schooling in one's future
in A la Juventud Filipina (Ronica Valdeavilla, 2018). While in Por la Educasion Recibe
Lustre la Patria, the poem speaks of the Jesuits, the ratio studiorum (study plan),
(WORLD 'S PHILIPPINE Knowledge HUB), who formed a close relationship between
education and faith.
3. From the 1860’s to 1890’s intellectuals were tagged as destabilizers of the colonial
government. In your opinion, why were intellectuals, such as Jose Burgos and the
Illustrados, becoming the favorite target of the repressive regime ?
Padre Jose Burgos was made known in their position as an educated elite and a
secular priest, his capacity empowered him to rise rapidly within the pecking order of the
Philippines, However, he was dismayed by the cruel rule of the Spanish and that
hypocritical minister who supports the foreign system, which led to him becoming a
victim of authoritarian regimes who labeled him a destabilizer. The same with the
Illustrados, their objectives were to fight for the political rights of Filipinos, which were
supposed to be the same and non-discriminator y possessed by Spaniards. Also they
aimed to secularize the parishes in the Philippines, and to render the Philippines a
province that availed itself of equality under the Spanish system. They became the target
of the repressive regime because they do not want Filipinos to have their freedom and
enjoy their basic human rights, their rights to equality and more. They targeted Illustrados
and Jose Burgos to stop them in achieving their objectives and restricted them so that
their repressive regime would still continue.
