10 NEW TRENDS AND EVENTS IN SPORTS

1. TOURISM DRIVING FACILITIES

Communities are allocating bed-tax money, restaurant taxes and tourism-improvement-district
funds directly into facilities that will drive economic development back to their destinations since more
tourism related dollars are being invested into venue development compared to the early days of the
sports world.

2. NEW OLYMPIC SPORTS

A new sport debuts on the Olympic program which arouses the interest of the players resulting
to an increase of teams/athletes participating and more membership of the National Governing Body.
Several new sports such as freestyle BMX and skateboarding will be contested next year in Tokyo.

3. CREATING OWNED EVENTS

Destination clients of small and mid-tier markets that don’t have the resources to enter grand
competitions are more and more opting to invest their resources in created events. Creating an event
with your local partners basically means more efficiency in assets since bidding for against your well-
funded competitors isn’t a problem anymore.

4. NEWS RULES AND REGULATIONS FOR NBA (2019)

They made some changes in the instructions for timeouts, and the game flows. The new
measures put in place by it are as follows:
 The player foul limit for each player is 6.
 The game clock stops after the last two minutes of the fourth period and overtime.
 Referees will evaluate the delay of any game violation.
 There will be 5 minutes overtime.
 There will be two timeouts per overtime. Initially, there were three timeouts for the teams.
 The timeouts period of the game is the same whether televised or not televised. (6 full, 1 20-
second per half).
 There is a bonus free throw after the fifth foul per period of the game.
 The numbers of players allowed on a free throw lane are five—3 defensive players and 2
offensive players.
 All the jersey numbers for the basketball players are legal cording to NBA.

5. VOLLEYBALL RULE CHANGES (2019-20)

 2-2-2, 2-3j (NEW), 2-4-1e(NEW), 2-4 PENALTIES 3 (NEW), 9-8-1i: When the ball strikes the cables
and/or the diagonal poles used to retract ceiling suspended net systems the referee will stop play
and determine if the ball was playable. The referee will signal out-of-bounds or replay.
  4-2-1, 4-2-1a (NEW), 4-2-1e (NEW), 4-2-2 (NEW): Eliminates the solid-colored uniform
requirements, establishes that the libero uniform must clearly contrast with his/her teammates’
uniforms and reorganizes the legal uniform rule.
 8-1-6, 8-2-5g (NEW), 8-2-6d: Establishes that the ball remains dead when tossed for serve and it
touches any part of the backboard or supports hanging in a vertical position over the serving area
and is an illegal serve (Signal 13) and not a service fault.

6. NEW RULES FOR GOLF 2019

 Drop from knee height (NOT shoulder height)
 Measure the area to drop in with the longest club in your bag (except a putter)
 Drop in and play from the relief area
 When dropping back-on-the-line, your ball cannot be played from nearer the hole than your
chosen reference point
 Time to search – 3 minutes (NOT 5 minutes)
 If you accidentally move your ball when searching for it, replace it without penalty
 No penalty for a double hit – it only counts as one stroke
 No penalty if your ball hits you or your equipment accidentally after a stroke
 No penalty if your ball strikes the flagstick when you have chosen to leave it in the hole
 Spike mark and other shoe damage on the putting green can be repaired
 Ball accidentally moved on putting green – no penalty and replace
 Ball marked, lifted and replaced on putting green is moved by wind to another position –replace
ball on the original spot
 Penalty areas replace water hazards, and you can move loose impediments, ground your club
and take practice swings in penalty areas without penalty, just as you can on the fairway or in the
rough
 You can’t take relief from a penalty area unless you are at least 95% certain your ball is in the
penalty area
 In bunkers you can move loose impediments
 In bunkers you cannot touch the sand with your club in the area right in front of or right behind
your ball, during your backswing or in taking practice swings
 Free relief is allowed if your ball is embedded on the fairway or in the rough (but “embedded”
means that part of your ball is below the level of the ground)
 Unplayable ball in bunker – extra option to drop outside the bunker for 2 penalty strokes
 You cannot have your caddie or your partner standing behind you once you begin taking your
stance
 Pace of Play - it is recommended that you take no longer than 40 seconds to make a stroke (and
usually you should be able to play more quickly than that) and Ready Golf in stroke play is
encouraged

7. SPORT CLIMBING 2020

In the Olympics, men's and women's sport climbing will consist of three disciplines: speed
climbing, bouldering and lead climbing. In speed climbing, two athletes secure themselves to ropes and
race each other on a fixed route to the top of a 15-meter high wall.

8. KARATE IN OLMPICS 2020

Two weight-matched competitors face off in an 8 by 8 meter area for 3 minutes. They're
awarded points when they land strikes, kicks or punches with good form, power and control on the
target area of their opponent's body. The person with the most points at the end of the match or the
first person to amass an eight-point lead is declared the winner.
9. SURFING IN TOKYO OLYMPICS 2020
Four athletes compete at a time, with each heat lasting 20 to 25 minutes, depending on the
quality of the waves. During that time each wave can only have one rider. Instead of being judged on
how many waves they catch, the athletes are judged on the difficulty of the maneuvers they perform,
with masterful execution on large waves bringing the highest scores. An athlete's two highest scores
count, with the two surfers at the top of the rankings moving on to the next round.

10. SAFETY
Athlete safety in several Olympic sports has spawned the creation of Safe Sport, an
independent investigative organization created to protect athletes and those involved in the Olympic
movement. Safe Sport, and in some cases full background checks, are now mandated by numerous
sports organizations across the country, and it doesn’t stop with coaches. Officials, board members,
event volunteers and others are now very likely to be required to complete a background check and the
Safe Sport training program.
