The 7 Tenets of Tutoring

A sound educational experience is one in which the student’s needs are identified, the Tutor works collaboratively
with the student to meet those needs, and the Tutor assesses and ensures that the student understands the
concepts discussed throughout the session.

1. Provides Accurate Content

• Provides, arrives at, and confirms appropriate and accurate information with the student
• Meets the needs of the student
• Aligns with the directions the student has provided from their teacher/instructor/professor

2. Appropriately Clarifies:
• what the student is working on
• where the student is on the learning curve (level of understanding)
• what the student hopes to achieve during the session

3. Identifies an Appropriate Approach

• Identifies the most appropriate approach (i.e., learning strategy) to begin the session, based on information
gained from clarification
• Chooses an initial approach, understanding that it may need to change
• Adjusts approach as needed
• Utilizes the appropriate tools and skills to convey or solicit information and thoughts effectively
• Transitions smoothly between showing, telling, and engaging as the need arises based on the interaction with
the student

4. Ensures Understanding
• Engages the student frequently with thought-provoking and focused questions
• Engages the student with clear and instructive comments
• Allows the student an opportunity to demonstrate their understanding of the material being discussed

5. Manages Time Appropriately

• Sets expectations early (creates a road map), with the understanding that expectations may be adjusted as
the session progresses and more information is gathered
• Works at the student's pace answering questions as they arise and ensuring understanding before moving
forward
• Revises and shares expectations as the session progresses based on the work that is done to ensure the
student is not surprised when the session wraps up
• Instills confidence in the student that their needs have been met, they have attained the knowledge to take the
next steps with their work, and they can work independently once the session ends

6. Displays Professionalism & Respect

• Conducts every session with professionalism, respect, and sensitivity for all students, all who come to us from
diverse social, family, economic, and educational backgrounds

7. Demonstrates Familiarity with Classroom Tools and Procedures

• Demonstrates strong understanding of the functionality of the classroom tools and procedures
