2 : INTRODUCTION

Indeed, Malaysia has succeeded in attracting the world's attention as the best model or mold in
the aspects of Islamic finance and sharia. In fact, in 2012 the International Monetary Fund (IMF)
recognized Malaysia as one of the pioneers of the world's Islamic financial system which has produced
many dynamic Shariah intellectuals and scholars to support the Islamic finance industry in Malaysia
which in turn becomes a reference for other Islamic institutions around the world. Among the leading
Shariah figures in Malaysia and even globally is Datuk Dr. Mohd Daud bin Bakar.(Fund, 2012)

Datuk Dr. Mohd Daud Bakar is a man with various talents. From a Shariah intellectual to a Shariah adviser
and Shariah entrepreneur, he is always thirsting for more platforms to contribute to the global world. Prior
to founding the Islamic financial advisory company, Amanie Advisors, he was also a member of many
Shariah Advisory Boards of Islamic financial institutions across the continent. Amanie Advisors excelled
by winning the 'Islamic Economic Knowledge Infrastructure' award by His Majesty, Sheikh Mohammed
bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and the Government of Dubai at
the 2015 Global Islamic Economic Summit. Earlier, in 2014, Dr. Mohd Daud was awarded the title of
‘Tokoh Perdana Anugerah Maulidur Rasul 2014’ by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong in conjunction with the
Maulidur Rasul celebration at the national level. (Shariahminds, The Author)

2.1 : Background

2.1.1 : Birth history of the founder of amanie advisors

Mohd Daud Bakar is a villager from Alor Setar, Kedah. Born on March 5, 1964. Now, his birthplace is no
more. However, he noted that he can still remember the exact position and location of the house. He was
the fourth child in the family but his eldest sister had died when he was 10 years old. This family life is
very simple. His father, Bakar bin Ibrahim, was a fish trader in the Alor Setar big market and his income
was sufficient although not much. (Daud Bakar, 2018)

This very simple life was tested with great trials and challenges that changed their destiny. His mother
named Ain Noor Ain was divorced when he was just 10 months old. The condition and stigma of the
society which looked down on his family and his mother had to find various side jobs just to provide some
food so that the family would not go hungry. Every test that comes has its wisdom. So is this family. At a
time when the family is in dire need of a patron and protector, a man named Mohd Jamil Abdullah came
forward to propose to his mother as his wife and also the father of his young children. Her mother had
accepted the proposal despite knowing that her new husband's family would continue to look down on
and despise the widow of four children.(Mohd Daud Bakar, Biography)

After getting married, his stepfather decided to take them from Alor Star to a small town called Bedung
near Sungai Petani. Initially, his stepfather whom he called abah worked full time as a firewood hunter in
the rubber tree forest. David often helped him even though he was only 5-6 years old. Meanwhile, his
mother took a wage to wash and iron people's clothes and also cook when there is a demand.(Daud
Bakar, 2018)

When he was almost 7 years old, his family moved back to Alor Setar by renting a house in Simpang
Kuala, the road to Kuala Kedah. His stepfather got a new job as an assistant in the canteen at Maktab
Mahmud with a salary of RM20.00 a month. While his mother became a village Quran teacher. His mother
was able to study the Quran with the same teacher as Ustaz Ismail Hashim, the international qari
champion several times but had to stop studying due to work pressure and poverty.(Daud Bakar, 2018)

2.1.2 : History of Education

He started his primary school education at Sekolah Kebangsaan Sg. Korok Baru in Alor Setar which is
located about 2 km from his house. He had to walk to school every day because there were no vehicles
to use at that time. Even so, the passion to acquire knowledge is always ablaze because in his opinion
when he goes to school then he will gain new knowledge and experience every day. He also praised his
dedicated and caring teachers who added to the students' interest in the school. He also doesn't like
skipping school because it is very detrimental. (Daud Bakar, 2018)

He attended his secondary education at Maktab Mahmud, a well -known religious school in Alor Setar.
Even so, at the time, religious school students were considered second -grade students. As the saying
goes, ‘A good seed is thrown on land into a mountain, thrown into the sea into an island’. After getting
excellent results in the SRP, he was offered a place to go to the Klang Islamic College (KIK) an elite
boarding school in the religious stream. The foundations of Islamic education and leadership are
subsequently nurtured in KIK. After finishing SPM, he got a place to continue his studies in Kuwait. (Daud
Bakar, 2018)

At that time, he desperately needed a certain amount of money in preparation for studying in Kuwait.
Hearing the news that his stepdaughter wanted to fly, his stepfather came far from Kedah. Unfortunately,
not to give money, but to try to persuade him not to go abroad. It is feared that his stepdaughter will be
like a "pea that forgets the skin". He was so frustrated with his stepfather's actions that he was consumed
by the negative words of those around him. His determination to achieve his ambitions by borrowing

money from teachers at KIK and flying to Kuwait was greeted by his senior Datuk Hasan Basri. (Daud
Bakar, 2018)

At the University of Kuwait, he always gets the Dean List. His fluency in Arabic became increasingly
apparent. Later, upon graduation, he was accepted to serve at the International Islamic University of
Malaysia (IIUM) and was sent to pursue a PhD at the University of St. Andrew in the UK. His thesis is in
the field of Usul Fiqh which is the discipline of the methodology used by the mujtahids to develop Islamic
laws. (Daud Bakar, 2018)

3.1 : Shariah and Islamic Finance

His early education was pure Islamic studies starting at Maktab Mahmud, Alor Setar, then Klang Islamic
College up to the level of Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia, he continued his studies at the Bachelor of Shariah
level at the University of Kuwait up to the PhD level at the University of St. Andrews, United Kingdom in
the field of Usul Fiqh, but he excelled in the field of Islamic finance.(Mohd Daud Bakar, Biography)

The beginning of his glory in the Islamic finance industry began when he was asked by the late Professor
Dr. Saedon Othman to develop and prepare a course framework for the subject of Contemporary
Muamalah and also Contemporary Zakat (Daud Bakar, 2018:31). As soon as he obtained his PhD from
the University of St. Andrews. Although the two courses were outside his field of specialization, namely
Usul Fiqh, he accepted the assignment until he eventually became an expert in both of these fields,
especially Islamic finance.

His excellence in Islamic finance was further enhanced when he was appointed to the Shariah Advisory
Council (SAC) at Bank Negara Malaysia and the Securities Commission at a young age of 33 years and
was the youngest member of the SAC (Daud Bakar, 2018: 31). Among his contributions was a research
paper on the necessity of imposing gharamah or late payment fines on Islamic financial financing in the
1990s which later became the basis for Islamic banking practices in Malaysia in relation to late payment
fines (Daud Bakar, 2018: 102). This proposal is actually contrary to the shariah stance made by Islamic
banking in Malaysia since 1983 (Daud Bakar, 2018: 103).

6|Page
He has been a member of the AAOIFI Shariah Council at a very young age compared to the majority of
its members who are on average 55 years old. Although he is often criticized for providing views and
suggestions, among them are among senior sharia scholars in Malaysia who wrote negative comments
related to his study of gharamah until he was accused of legalizing riba al-fadl (Daud Bakar: 2018: 103).
But in the end his existence can be accepted because he made a solid study of every problem raised
(Daud Bakar, 2018: 104), even his Islamic financial thinking has become a trend in the financial industry
now around the world.

3.1.1 : Recognition

His success in designing Islamic Finance is very significant. His huge role has enabled him to gain various
recognitions locally and internationally. It started with the Islamic Financial Figure award organized by
the Association of Islamic Banking Institutions Malaysia (AIBIM) in 2005. Subsequently, internationally,
he won the Zaki Badawi Shariah Advisor award at the Sukuk Summit in London in 2008. While in 2014,
he won the highest award The Asset Triple A Industry Leadership Award from a body headquartered in
Hong Kong. In the same year, the Government of Malaysia awarded him the Tokoh Perdana
Maulidurrasul at the National level presented by DYMM Seri Paduka Baginda Yang Dipertuan Agong
(Daud Bakar, 2018: 113).

Not only that, he was also appointed to the board of various global financial institutions. Among them are
Bank Negara Malaysia, Amundi Asset Management in France, Bank of London and Middle East
(London), BNP Paribas Najma (Bahrain), Guidance Financial (USA), Salama Insurance (Dubai), Natixis
Bank (Dubai), Oasis Asset Management (South Africa), Noor Islamic Bank (Dubai), Bank al-Khayr
(Bahrain), Morgan Stanley (Dubai), Franklin Templeton (Kuala Lumpur and Luxembourg), Sedco Capital
(Saudi and Luxembourg), Cagamas Berhad (Malaysia), and also the S&P Islamic Index and Dow Jones
Islamic Market Index (New York) (Amanie Advisors: 2018).

To date, with consistent credibility and excellence he has been appointed Chairman of the Board of
Governors (President) of International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) from 1st July 2019 to 30th June
2022. In addition, success continues to be forged internationally with his appointment as the Chairman

3.1.2 : Recognition to the Amanie Advisor Company

on 1 April 2005 he has made strides in the field of Shariah Entrepreneurship by establishing Amanie
Advisors (Daud Bakar, 2018: 74). He is the Founder and Executive Chairman of Amanie Group, a Shariah
advisory firm with offices in Kuala Lumpur, Dubai, Casablanca, Muscat, and Almaty (Daud Bakar, 2018:
38). Under his entrepreneurial leadership and strategic management, Amanie Advisors excelled by
winning the 'Best Islamic Economic Knowledge Infrastructure' award by His Majesty, Sheikh Mohammed
bin Rashid Al-Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and the Government of Dubai at
the Islamic Economic Summit Global 2015. The company has also been awarded Best Shariah Advisory
Firm 2016 by the Global Islamic Finance Award (GIFA).(Shariahminds, The Author)

3.1.3 : Challenges Facing Amanie Advisor

This success is not as easy as expected. An international company has been through a difficult time. The
company once faced the most bitter challenge when its business was almost paralyzed due to no direct
income for almost three years (2008-2010) and had to lay off some employees and cut the salaries of
the remaining employees (Daud Bakar, 2018). This is due to a mistake in reading the needs of the market
at that time which also involved the whole world in the economic downturn, one way to save the company
is to cut training and human resource development, while that is the core business of Amanie Advisors
(David Bakar: 2018). Even so, the company bounced back and took all necessary steps to ensure it
remained relevant. This can be evidenced by his success in winning various prestigious awards as
mentioned earlier.

3.1.4 : Writing and Arts

He has also translated thoughts related to Islamic finance through his writings. Among his works is Minda
Syariah Kewangan Islam which has been translated from the English version, namely Shariah Minds in
Islamic Finance. This book is highly recommended to anyone who wants to venture into the field of Islamic
Finance (Yasushi Suzuki, 2016). The book won the Best Book Award of Islamic Finance in 2016 at the
Islamic Finance Awards Night, 2016 (GIFA, 2016). While the book An Insightful Journey Into Emirates

4 : CONCLUSION

Overall I am so excited to study the background of a leader who is a source of pride and an idol that
I will emulate, namely Datuk Dr. Mohd Daud bin Bakar. It is evident in the nature of a leader who is very
exemplary with his simple personality traits but able to shake the world which makes him a respected
human being. This can be seen based on the achievements, service and sacrifice as a successful villager
who eventually managed to develop and become a leading figure in Malaysia and also globally. the
credibility of the company as well as figures who have made significant contributions to society and the
country.

I strongly agree with the proverb attributed to him that “A good seed is thrown on land into a mountain,
thrown into the sea into an island” as much as the success he experienced as a result of his efforts
and hard work to achieve his ambitions. After various successes, it is time for him to impart knowledge
through books, writing or motivation presented to readers to be a guide, reference and example to young
people who want to achieve success as the words he mentioned in his writing " Fly with MDB ”.
