Short answer questions:

1. How was Bholi different from the other children at home?
Ans. Bholi had fallen from a cot when she was ten months old. This damaged
a part of her brain and affected her intelligence. She became a slow
learner, and showed retarded growth. When she was two years old, she
had an attack of smallpox. Her entire body was permanently disfigured
with deep pock-marks. She learnt to speak at the age of five and
stammered while speaking.
2. What filled Bholi, a dumb cow, with new hope in her?
Ans. Bholi’s first day of school brought hope of a new life. She had found a
loving and kind teacher. The teacher inspired her and gave her a book.
She had made Bholi feel confident about herself. She explained the
importance of learning and instilled in her new hope. Slowly Bholi began
to learn and realised that a new life was about to begin for her.
3. Why did Bholi’s teacher feel like ‘an artist admiring her masterpiece’?
Ans. Bholi’s teacher felt like an artist admiring her masterpiece, when she
witnessed Bholi speak up at her own marriage, against her greedy
bridegroom. The teacher realized that her words, education and
motivation had transformed the shy, self- conscious Bholi into the bold
and confident Sulekha, who could take a stand and decide not to marry a
mean, greedy man. The teacher felt satisfied that her education had
helped a girl to stand on her own feet and voice her opinion against age-
old social evils such as dowry.
Long answer questions
Why did Bholi refuse to accept Bishamber as her husband when she had
agreed to his proposal earlier?
Ans. Earlier, Bholi did not oppose the proposal of Bhishamber, as she wanted to
save the honour of her family. Bhishamber was rich, had a big shop, a house
of his own and money in the bank. But when he saw the pock-marks on Bholi’s
face, he demanded a dowry of five thousand rupees to marry her. Even the
turban of Ramlal at his feet couldn’t melt his heart.
Bholi realized that Bhishamber had no regard or respect for her parents. Also,
he treated marriage like a bargain and forced her father to cough up five
thousand rupees. So, when he moved forward to garland her, Bholi threw the
garland into the fire. She declared that she would not have such a mean,
greedy and a worthless person as her husband.
