Gas & Smoke Detector and Alarm
INTRODUCTION & LITERATURE REVIEW
Smoke is a visible suspension of carbon or other particles in the air which emitted from a
burning substance [1]. It is commonly an unwanted by-product of fires and fireplaces but may
also be used for pest control, communication as smoke signals, defense as smoke-screen and
inhalation of tobacco or other drugs. Smoke inhalation is the primary cause of death in victims of
indoor fires. Many compounds of smoke from fires are highly toxic and poisoning. The most
dangerous is the carbon monoxide which leading to carbon monoxide poisoning. Those who
inhale large amount of smoke quickly lead to incapacitation and loss of consciousness [2]. Home
fires are still a problem in our daily lives. From 2007 to 2011 United States fire departments
responded to an average of 1,000 home structure fires every day, and home fires killed an
average of seven people per day and caused roughly $28 in damage every second [3]. According
to the statistics by Australasian Fire and Emergency Service Authorities Council (AFAC) [4], the
residential deaths per 100,000 persons is between 0.1 and 0.7 during 1996-2004. According to
The United States Fire Administration [5], the estimation of annual residential building fire
deaths in United States is between 2385 and 3050 from 2003 to 2012. A working smoke alarm
has been reported to reduce the risk of death from residential fires by from between 50% to 70%
[6]. In order to detect the presence of the smoke, smoke detection system is created. Every single
electronic device in the building may have possibility to produce ignition whether through short
circuit or any other ways. Even the charging mobile phone might contribute to the flame. Thus,
awareness and consciousness of the importance of smoke detection system must be planted on
people mind. In addition, fires are more dangerous at night. For an instance, when the occupants
of the house are asleep, the smoke and deadly gases that produce during burning might kill them
silently. Furthermore, it becomes worst with the fact that the dense smoke reduces visibility.
Most of fire victims died because of smoke and gas inhalation rather than burns. Therefore,
smoke detector must be placed at the major area inclusive every rooms. Number of lives can be
saved by placing the smoke detection system at the right place. A smoke detector is a very
inexpensive safety tool. So, there is no reason for not having smoke detection system in the
house or office building [7].

PROBLEM STATEMENT
How to form a wireless gas & smoke detector and alarm which detect gas/smoke produced by
any source and give alarm in order to escape from the danger?

OBJECTIVE
The objective of this work is to design and manufacturing of wireless gas & smoke/fire detector
and alarm.
SIGNIFICANCE
Having smoke detectors placed in various locations around your home allows for fast and
effective detection. The smoke detector siren will warn you, day or night, that there is a potential
fire, allowing you to quickly check the nature of the problem and hopefully prevent any damage.
When placed in the right location, the smoke alarm can also help firefighters quickly locate the
fire in the home, allowing them to better focus their efforts. Places where smoking is not allowed
(i.e. public places, offices, school, colleges, universities etc.) smoke detectors can be used to
prevent the smoking in such places.

METHODOLOGY
Proteus software will be used to form the circuit of smoke detector and alarm. Also we will make
a physical model of wireless smoke detector and alarm. In physical model of smoke detector and
alarm following elements will be used:
1. MQ5 Gas Sensor, Methane, Butane, LPG, Smoke Sensor
2. 9V Battery
3. LED
4. Buzzer
5. Wires
TYPES
1. Ionization smoke detector
2. Photoelectric smoke detector
3. Dual smoke detector

SCHEDULE
TIME PROGRESS OF PROJECT
1 Week ( 15 to 19 Nov) Proposal of Project
2 Week ( 22 Nov to 3 Dec) Physical Model
1 Week ( 6 to 10 Dec) Project Report
15 Dec Demonstration & Submission

AVAILABLE FACILITIES
There are number of software available for making and testing the test model for gas and smoke
detector and alarm. For example Proteus, Solidworks, Ansys, circuit etc.
For making physical the model of gas and smoke detector and alarm the components are easily
available in market.
