At the end of this module 3, you should be able to:

1. To carry out calculations involving shear reinforcements.
2. Draw the details of the designed beams

5. 1 SHEAR STRENGTH PROVIDED BY CONCRETE

Code Requirements (Section 411.2, 2010 NSCP)

The basic code requirement on shear strength is that the factored shear force shall be equal to
or less than the design shear of the section.

𝐕𝐮 ≤ Φ𝐕𝐧

Where: Vu = factored shear force at section considered

Φ = strength reduction factor in shear = 0.75

Vn is the nominal shear strength computed by Vn = Vc + Vs

Vc is the nominal shear strength provided by concrete

Vs is the nominal shear strength provided by the shear reinforcements.

5.2 SHEAR REINFORCEMENTS

Types of shear reinforcement:

1. Stirrups perpendicular to the axis of the member

2. Welded wire fabric with wires located perpendicular to the axis of member, and
3. Spirals, circular ties or hoops.

For non-prestressed members, shear reinforcement shall be permitted to consist of;

1. Stirrups making an angle of 45 degrees or more with longitudinal tension
reinforcement.
2. Longitudinal reinforcement with bent portion making an angle of 30 degrees or more
with the longitudinal tension reinforcement.
3. Combination of stirrups and bent longitudinal reinforcement.

Where circular ties, hoops or spirals are used as reinforcements, where 𝐕𝐬 = , it shall be

members. Av shall be taken as two times the area of the bar in a circular tie, hoop, or spiral at a spacing
S , where S is measured in a direction parallel to the longitudinal reinforcement and fyt is the specified
yield strength of circular tie, hoop or spiral reinforcement.
𝐀𝐯 𝐟𝐲𝐭 𝐝
Where inclined stirrups are used as shear reinforcement, 𝐕𝐬 = (sinα + cosα)

𝐕𝐬 = 𝐀 𝐯 𝐟𝐲 sinα ≤ 0.25√𝐟𝐜′ 𝐛𝐰 d where α is the angle between bent-up
reinforcement and longitudinal axis of the member.

parallel bent-up bars at different distances from the support, shear strength Vs shall be
computed as:

5.3 DESIGN OF SHEAR REINFORCEMENTS

If 𝐕𝐮 > Φ𝐕𝐜 , provide shear reinforcement.

1. Calculate the maximum ultimate shear and the ultimate shear at d-distance from face
of the support ( and at other points where ultimate shear shall be determined).
2. Calculate the ultimate shear strength provided by concrete & compare with the ultimate
shear.

Φ𝐕𝐜 =0.75 x 0.17λ√𝐟𝐜′ 𝐛𝐰 d

If Vu > ΦVc ,then proceed to step 3.
If Vu < ΦVc but Vu > 0.5ΦVc , then provide minimum area of reinforcement,
proceed to step 4
If Vu < 0.5ΦVc , then shear reinforcements are not needed.

3. If Vu > ΦVc

Solve the shear strength Vs to be provided by concrete at d-distance from face of the

support where 𝐕𝐬 = 𝐮 𝚽 𝐜
If Vs > 0.66 √fc′ bwd, the beam fails in shear so enlarge the section.

Example 5.1. A rectangular beam is to be designed to carry an ultimate shear force of 125 KN.

a. If no web reinforcement is to be used and if fc′ = 24.5 MPa, what is the effective depth of
the beam if b = 460 mm?
b. If minimum reinforcement is necessary, what is the minimum depth of the cross section
if b = 320mm?

Solution:
a. If Vu = 0.5ΦVc ; Vu = 0.50x 0.75 x 0.17λ√fc′ bwd

125 x 103 = 0.50x 0.75 x 0.17(1)√24.5 x 460d; d = 861.17 mm

b. If Vu = ΦVc ; 125 x 103 = 0.75 x 0.17(1)√24.5 x 320d; d = 618.97 mm

Example 5.2. A simply-supported rectangular beam is subjected to a dead load of 40 KN/m (

including its own weight) and a live load of 45 KN/m, both acting throughout its 6 m length. If
b = 400 mm and d = 560mm, fc′= 21 MPa and fyt = 276 MPa, throughout what part of the beam
is reinforcement required? Design the beam for shear and draw the details. Height of beam h =
630mm. Use λ = 1.

Solution:

Vud > ΦVc , therefore, shear reinforcement is necessary.
At d-distance from face of the support,

0.66√fc′ bwd = 0.66√21 (400x560)/(1 x 103 ) = 677.48 KN > (Vsd = 215.89 KN )
Therefore the section is safe in shear.

x5 = x2+ x4 = 1.91 + 0.54 = 2.45m
Web reinforcement is required from the face of the support to the point 1.91m from the face of
the support and minimum reinforcement is required from 1.91m to 2.45m from the face of the
support. Beyond 2.45m from the face of the support, no web reinforcement is required.

DETAILS OF SHEAR REINFORCEMENT

Example 5.3. A 6-m simply supported beam with end supports carries a 100 KN/m uniformly
distributed ultimate load acting throughout its entire length and a concentrated ultimate load
of 120 KN acting at the midspan. The beam has a width of 300 mm and an effective depth of

distance from the center of reinforcements to the adjacent extreme fiber in tension is 70 mm for single
layer of reinforcements and 90 mm for double layers of reinforcements. The same applies for the
compression reinforcements. If reinforced concrete weighs 23.6 KN/m 3, CHB weighs 2.3 KN/m2, fc′ = 21

a. The ultimate uniformly distributed load the beams carry.
b. The critical ultimate moments using the ACI moment coefficients.
c. The ultimate moment capacity of the section as singly-reinforced if reinforcements are arranged
in one layer and if they are arranged in two layers.
d. The ultimate moment capacity of the section in tension-controlled condition if reinforcements
are arranged in one layer and if they are arranged in two layers.
e. The number of 25 mm diameter bars required for each critical ultimate moment.
f. The required spacing of 10 mm diameter stirrups required at d-distance, 0.50m. 0.75m. 1.00m
etc, from face of the support.
