EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

This paper explains our experience of an internship program at the Information Technology (IT)
department of Fana Broadcasting Corporate (FBC). We focus on the work of the internship coordinator or
the hosting organization advisor for this program. He works successfully to implement the internship
experience for us. We have mainly focused on the following activities:-

 How to create a small network with switches and making our own network cables.
 How to maintain desktop and laptop by assembling and disassembling.
 How to maintain daily problems which can occur in real world (on job training).

Hence they didn’t give us any specific and complete project, we did not gain a lot of knowledge but we
had a great chance to sharpen our skills in a professional working environment.

CHAPTER ONE

1. INTRODUCTION

1.1 Overview

1.1.1 Objective
This internship was a transition from “in-class or lecture type learning” to “learning through
experience” or “learning through the work” for us.

The General objective of this internship was to see the real life experience of what we have been
learning in classroom, through the work of single organization.

Our specific objective during this internship was getting a good knowledge of basics of
hardware, installations of networks in big organizations and local area networking.

1.2 Background of the organization

1.2.1 Description of organization

After the dawn fall of Dergue few broadcast media were get rebirth. Fana Broadcasting
Corporate (FBC) was one of them. FBC (the former Radio Fana) was established in November
1994. It is the first national private radio station in Ethiopia. The station is broadcasting its
programs and News in six languages. These are Amharic, Afan Oromo, Somali, Afar, Sidama,
and Welayta. As a medium it uses SW1-6110KHZ (49MB), SW2-7210KHZ (41MB) covering
most of the country and on MW1080KHZ which encompasses 100km radius from Addis Ababa.
The station has also launched the first private FM station (FM98.1 Addis Ababa) on March 10,
2007. Currently it is running other eight FM radio stations in different parts of the country which
are Mekele FM94.8, Dessie FM96.0, Shashemene FM103.4, Haromaya FM94.8, Gondar, Jimma
FM98.1, Nekemte FM96.1 and WelaytaSodo FM 99.9.

skilled and experienced manpower and up-to-date technologies. Fana Broadcasting Corporate,
which has a rich experience in radio and online services and built its own 11-storey media
complex, is endeavoring to become one of the leading media houses in East Africa.

Fana Broadcasting Corporate has become a pioneer in the country’ s media history by building a
full HD studio within its media complex and commencing full HD television transmission. After
months of test transmission, it started transmission with its full capacity in January 2017 after it
was inaugurated by the former President Dr Mulatu Teshome. After equipping itself with the
needed manpower and tools that are essential for online media, which is one of the best mediums
at present, Fana Broadcasting Corporate is presenting various contents to its audiences in
Amharic, Afan Oromo, Tigrigna and English languages via its website, Facebook and Twitter
pages, including in photos, videos and audios. It reaches more than 6 million viewers on average
per week.

In radio broadcasting service, besides its national and Fana FM 98.1 transmission, it has opened
FM stations out of the capital Addis Ababa in 11 regional cities with a stunning speed where all
stations are networked, equipped with the necessary manpower , and fitted with the latest radio
technologies. Currently , it has 12 FM stations across the nation that provide broadcasting
services in Amharic, Afan Oromo, Afarigna, Somaligan, Tigrigna, Wolaitigna and Sidamigna

CHAPTER TWO

2. MANAGEMENT, TRAINING AND EMPLOYEE INFORMATION

2.1 Duties performed while on the program

Majorly, our duties were that of an assistant to the senior systems administrator, who was
directly the supervisor for all the interns at the Fana ICT.

These duties include;

 Installation of software such as, anti-virus, Microsoft office, power ge’ez and many other
utility applications for employees.
 Fixing hardware issues such as, replacing bad keyboards, replacing damaged hard drives,
replacing random access memory (RAM) and so many other numerous hardware issues.
 Attending to minor internet issues such as, re-crimping of damaged cable terminators (RJ-
45), crimping new internet cables, and replacement of damaged switches.

2.2 Orientation

The internship program organized by Adama science and technology university and FBC during
this summer was a 40 working days program focusing on familiarizing technology with the
developing and maintaining networking and other office support operations. But since we were
late to start the internship, our working weeks are reduced to 7 weeks from 8 weeks. So that we
were expected to acquire better understanding of the overall process of FBC’s IT department
working.

We are 2 in number. The training program was scheduled and implemented for 5 days per week
and the daily working program starts in the morning at 8:30 am and ends up at 5:30 in the
afternoon. We were further guided by our supervisor to get familiarized with concepts and
procedures of practical works in medias. He basically guided us to learn the jobs of IT

professional in media technologies starting from studio recordings to the time a program
broadcasts in television or radio.

FBC uses two different softwares for television programs and radio programs. A software called
Avid is used for television programs while Natia is used for radio programs which are both
licensed with expensive costs.

A single program passes numerous stages from recording to broadcasting. The first one is an
“INGEST ROOM”. Every recording from different sources (i.e. either recordings from other
television channels or recordings by fana tv journalists) should first be “ingested” to the Avid
server with rough or non-professional edits using Avid ingest software and the process continues
to the professional editors. There are 12 editing rooms with very skilled editors, who fetch
recordings from the Avid server and edit as the journalist wants by Avid edit software. The
edited video will then transferred to “MC ROOM” or master control room where it will be ready
for final broadcasting and saved on Avid server with very specific name. Finally, the technicians
in the studio releases in air by fetching with its name from the Avid server.

In radio broadcasting there are two cases, the first one is the program runs live from the studio
and the second one is a recorded program is released by the technicians. When a program is
recorded before the air time, a special sound proof room and the Natia software is used. The
recorded voice will then store in the Natia server. Whenever the program is needed, it simply
released from the server. Advertisements and musics also works in such manner. But if a radio
program is live, it released directly to the air but some recordings may be used from server in this
program.

2.3 Our supervisors help

Our supervisor gave us very in-time valuable instructions and put us in contact with experts in
the field, who gave us extensive guidance regarding many theoretical and practical issues. And
more importantly his enthusiastic encouragements and precious instructions during our
internship period helped us a lot. He gave us in-time feedback on different technological
innovations and updates.

2.4 Qualities we gained

During the internship training we have developed some new skills and qualities that could help
us create a good working environment. Some of these qualities are:-

Communication skills:

As discussion was a part of our daily routine being able to communicate, explaining what we
have in mind amongst each other was necessary so we had to develop this skill. We weren’t only
expected to communicate amongst each other but also we other members of the staff and with
our supervisors. Discussions with bosses or coworkers help us a lot to be more confident and will
sound more mature and experienced in a business setting.

Time management:
Being punctual helped us develop this other quality since being at work on time meant having
more time to spend on gathering around and working on the planned time fame. It makes us to
maintain a balance between our works and personal life without harming any of them.

Team work:
Basically engineering works are cooperative works which needs the participation of many
individuals. Accordingly we are also exercising our works by group as assigned by the institute
staff. Since different individuals observes things from different angle and generates different
ideas to solve the same problem. And the combination of those ideas is a solution of problem.
And also we develop patience and conflict management ways in situations when you disagree
with another member(s) of the team.

Entrepreneurship skill:
This internship program helps for us in order to know the entrepreneurial ways of thinking skills
that enables us to understand the business concepts, developing idea of business philosophy,
know the opportunities and resources which we have, select effective way of doing work, focus
on our customers as a business owner, know about risk and money management and have a long
term vision about being entrepreneurs.

13 | O c t o b e r , 2 0 1 9

But these weren’t the only qualities we developed. There was more like:-

 Punctuality
 Problem solving
 Taking constructive criticisms
 Respecting office rules and manners
 Hard working and being good observer
 Being responsible
 Adaptability

CHAPTER THREE

3. SPECIFIC JOB INFORMATION

3.1 Daily technical duties

We performed different duties through the seven weeks of internship. Most of the activities were
concerned on the hard ware part, configuration, maintaining, assembling and disassembling, and
so on. Because there wasn’t enough time to perform software projects. Below we discussed all
activities with their time schedule.

Week one

In the first week we were not familiar with the environment of Fana broad casting corporation
(FBC). So our immediate supervisor Mr.Yonael was responsible to show us all the activities
which are done by the corporation.

signals get recorded as well as controlling what the band hears during a performance

Week 2 and 3

In these two weeks we were performed on the networking area. To perform our daily technical
duties we used different materials

Fig: Stripper tool: used to strip the jacket of the Ethernet cable and Pisa used to cut
the wire

Fig: CRIMPAR: to crimp or connect a connector to the end of a cable and RJ-45 connector

‘on’ parallelism the cable is working correctly

Using the above items we were done Ethernet cable using T-568 Straight-Through Ethernet
cable because we required a cable to connect two Ethernet device directly together without a
hub.so for doing this we started from one end and strip the jacket off then untwist the pairs and
arrange the wires in the order of the desired cable end and finally we crimp it with RJ-45.

Week 4 and 5

In these two weeks we were doing assembling and dissembling lap tops and desktops

In the first week we were doing with the help our supervisor Mr.Yonael. But the next week we
were able to do independently. And we also able to replace damage RAM from the computer.

Fig: open desktop fig: new RAM

Week 6 and 7

In these last weeks we were doing helping other employees by maintaining problems, installing
printers and installing different types of software which are used by the corporation.

3.2 Other responsibilities

During our stay in FBC the responsibilities assigned for us begin with arriving on time or being
punctual; which is the main and most noted part of the responsibility as well as day to day
activity of a good worker in workplace. It’s also considered as the characteristic of a good
employee.

In addition to this we were responsible in

 helping the employees with any kind of IT problems

 installing software
 installing printers with the computer needed

3.3 Course
At the time of the internship the course that was beneficial for our technical knowledge and skills
was Data communication and computer networks (CSE 3221). Because we were working on
networking but there were also other activities which are not included in our courses like
maintaining laptops, assembling and dissembling laptops etc.

CHAPTER FOUR

4. REFLECTION AND CONCLUSION

4.1 Reflection
Internships have introduced us to a lot of useful resource and given us the opportunity to meet a
variety of professionals in our field. It can even provide us with a professional mentor.

As an intern we will became a master of time management. When we are working in a fast
placed professional environment we need to know every minute’s counts. Time management is
vital in every circumstance whether we are attending meeting, finishing tasks on deadlines, etc.

Internship fits us to strong work ethical, learning the most efficient way to complete our tasks
and to success our goal. Internship is a great tool to improve our chance as a job applicant and
help make me better potential employee.

This internship fit our career goals?

The first step in developing career goals is to assess our own personal characteristics. Our skills
and interests, and our strengths and weaknesses. We may then match our profile to a specific
direction. We may also want to identify aspects of our present and past experiences that will help
us determine our career goals. Having said that this internship has provided many opportunities.
It helped us to engage with many marketing professionals which helped us to know the real
world communication system.

Career goal changes as a result of this internship experience

No our career goal does not change but we learn from this internship we could do many things in
the media for the future.

The value of the internship

Working in the FBC gives us the opportunity to understand a computer science and
engineer’s role in the media sector in different ways .

20 | O c t o b e r , 2 0 1 9
ADAMA SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY UNIVERSITY

Also this internship was very important for us to gain knowledge and to see how the real world
work is seems on the networking related areas and giving us a real experience by using the skills,
techniques and knowledge we acquired in FBC.

Generally this internship provides us real life experience and exposure, the experience of trying
new is extremely beneficial, have introduced us to a lot of useful resource ,teaches us about the
specific industries and companies we are interested in, allow us to establish deeper relationships
than we normally would talk to stranger one-on-one, gives us more opportunities to build
connection with company professionals that can be very beneficial for our future career, helps to
develop our confidence and works imitatively without any confusion initiates it to do work area.
And gives the opportunity to learn more about ourselves, means it encourage personal
development but also a greater understanding of self which is to know our selves is to know our
goals and how to best achieve them.

4.2 Challenges during the internship

• Transportation was the main problem that we faced through the training period.
• Not enough work, there is not enough work assigned to us, we were bored underutilized
and strumming
• Uncooperative mentor, we were extract the knowledge out of them

4.3 Strengths during the internship

Time: In the summer, we learned how to use effectively our most valuable resource time.
Through being punctual and finishing a task at the given period.

Willingness to learn: we had a very good willingness to learn and see new things during this
internship

21 | O c t o b e r , 2 0 1 9
ADAMA SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY UNIVERSITY

Responsibility: although taking responsibility is difficult, we were completely excellent by

taking the responsibility by what we done in the internship

Work speed: our work speed were a little less when we compare to the professionals

Capacity of developing: In staying of Fana broad casting, we didn’t require to proposing new
technical idea and implementing system but other than this we are perfect on it.

Knowledge: During the internship, our overall knowledge of networking and network
installation was improved from what we gain theoretically from the classroom.

Sociability: Creating friendly relationships with labor-workers and staff-workers to get

necessary information and cooperation.

CHAPTER FIVE

5. RECOMMENDATION

5.1 Comments
Our comments in the internship program is the society or the companies in this country don’t
have good know-how how training helps students for their future.
We also noticed that resources and materials are stored and used carelessly. Because of this most
materials that are cost a lot are damaged and out of purpose.

Fig; Unwise use of materials

Area of field of internship is limited :
There are no other activities other than troubleshooting and installing a network. It would have
been better for the students experience if the scope were wider.
Otherwise it was really good experience.

5.2 Recommendation
Our recommendation for improving the internship students should have the responsibility of
identifying and securing work position that is appropriate as an internship experience.
This policy ensures that student will have opportunity to develop and practice important
employment seeking skills such as conducting a formal job search. However, with the proper

23 | O c t o b e r , 2 0 1 9
ADAMA SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY UNIVERSITY

planning, organization, structure and control off campus work related course such as internships
can be successfully and effectively integrated in the university curriculum.
 University:-our recommendation is what if the university builds its own research park
or huge lab for each department. For instance, we are a CSE student we have learnt
many subjects which contain many field of area like: -
 Networking
 Web development
 Software development
 Database
 All about computer

so, we have been only in networking area but, if there is a lab which contain all of the

above field of area we can learn all of them in two summer. But now as this system one

year is not enough to complete all of this.

 Department: -it’s better to place student in different organization to build student

talent, knowledge and ability to perform many things in different area.
For example, if first summer is in communication area like telecom the second summer
should be in different area like web development, maintenance or software development
area.
 Organization :-organization should full fill all materials which used in network area
like computer, lab class room, immediate supervisor, and different internet cable.
