The Nature of Forces

 FORCE AND MOTION
 TYPES OF FORCES
 HOW TO DETERMINE RESULTANT FORCE SCIENCE 7: Force and Motion
Prepared by: Teacher Tiffany De la Cruz
Force and Motion 2

• Galileo also proposed different weights would fall

at the same rate without external force acting on
them.

• Force = as a push or pull acting upon an object as

a result of its interaction with another object.

• Force can be viewed as any influence capable of

producing a change in the state of motion of an
object.
Force and Motion 3

I. Force can change the shape and size of things by

compressing, stretching, cutting, tearing, and
bending
II. Force can make a moving object stop.
III. Force can change the direction of a moving
object.

• Whenever an object moves from a rest position, its

velocity increases.
Force and Motion 4
• A force may not always cause an object to move,
especially if there is more than one force present.

• Resultant Force – force that acts and

+ =
causes a change in state of motion of an
object.
+ =

• Balanced Force – no change in motion

+ = 0
• Unbalanced Force – there is a net force.

Types of Forces
SCIENCE 7: Force, Motion, & Energy

Types of Forces 6

Contact Forces
• Applied Forces • Normal Forces

• Frictional Forces • Air Resistant Forces • Spring Forces • Tensional Forces

Non- Contact Forces

• Magnetic Force • Electrical Force • Gravitational Force

FRICTION
SCIENCE 7: Force, Motion, & Energy
Prepared by: Teacher Tiffany De la Cruz
Friction 8

• Oftentimes considered in the study of free body

diagram.

• It occurs when surfaces slide or tend to slide over

one another.

• It acts as parallel to the surface and opposite in

direction to its sliding motion.
Friction 9
Types of Friction:
• To reduce friction, the following are employed:
• Using lubricants, notably grease and oil
• Using wheels or rollers, notably balls and
bearings
• Streamlining by filling, sand papering, or
scrubbing.

Law of Universal
Gravitation
SCIENCE 7: Force, Motion, & Energy
Prepared by: Teacher Tiffany De la Cruz
Law of Universal 11
Gravitational

• Newton’s law of gravitation states that every point

mass in the universe attracts other point mass with
a force that is directly proportional to the product
of their masses and inversely proportional to the
square of the distances between them.

• The gravitational constant (G) = 6.67 x 10 -11
