that his presence on earth was the fulfillment of the prophesies made in the Old
Testament about the Messiah who was to come and save humanity from their sins.
This module will provide you with a listing and brief discussion or description
of the elements of Christianity

At the end of this module, you are expected to:

a. Recite the different teachings of Christianity
b. Examine the brief historical background of Christianity
c. Analyze the Core teachings of Christianity

Before proceeding, make sure that you still have an insights about the historical
background of Judaism since it traces its origin as an organized belief system

Read the following text on the importance of religion especially Christian church. If
there are some unfamiliar about the life of Jesus Christ you can consult the bible.
Afterwards, copy and answer the guide questions in a separate sheet.

Christianity is the religion based on the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. Most
followers of Christianity, called Christians, are members of one of three major groups-
-Roman Catholic, Protestant, or Eastern Orthodox. These groups have different
beliefs about Jesus and His teachings. But all consider Jesus central to their religion.
Most Christians believe God sent Jesus into the world as the Savior. Christianity
teaches that humanity can achieve salvation through Jesus Christ. Jesus lived in
Judea (later called Palestine), a Middle Eastern land ruled by the Romans. The
Romans crucified Jesus about A.D. 30. Jesus' followers were convinced that He rose
from the dead, and they soon spread Christianity to major cities throughout Judea.
Two practices important to Christian worship usually take place in churches.
These practices are (1) baptism and (2) the Eucharist, also called Holy Communion
or the Lord's Supper. The ceremony of baptism celebrates an individual's entrance
into Christianity. The Eucharist represents the Last Supper, the final meal that Jesus
shared with His disciples. Worshipers share bread and wine in the Eucharist as a
sign of their unity with each other and with Jesus as part in the seven sacraments.
Christians see Jesus as continuous with the God of Judaism.
The Synoptics depict two distinct geographical settings in Jesus' ministry. The
first takes place north of Judea, in Galilee, where Jesus conducts a successful ministry;
and the second shows Jesus rejected and killed when he travels to Jerusalem. Often
referred to as "rabbi",Jesus preaches his message orally. Notably, Jesus forbids those who
recognize him as the Messiah to speak of it, including people he heals and demons he
exorcises
John depicts Jesus' ministry as largely taking place in and around Jerusalem,
rather than in Galilee; and Jesus' divine identity is openly proclaimed and immediately
recognized.

 Scholars divide the ministry of Jesus into several stages. The Galilean ministry
begins when Jesus returns to Galilee from the Judaean Desert after rebuffing the
temptation of Satan. Jesus preaches around Galilee, and in Matthew 4:18–20, his first
disciples, who will eventually form the core of the early Church, encounter him and begin
to travel with him. This period includes the Sermon on the Mount, one of Jesus' major
discourses, as well as the calming of the storm, the feeding of the 5,000, walking on
water and a number of other miracles and parables. It ends with the Confession of
Peter and the Transfiguration.
As Jesus travels towards Jerusalem, in the Perean ministry, he returns to the
area where he was baptized, about a third of the way down from the Sea of Galilee along
the Jordan River (John 10:40–42). The final ministry in Jerusalem begins with
Jesus' triumphal entry into the city on Palm Sunday. In the Synoptic Gospels, during
that week Jesus drives the money changers from the Second Temple and Judas
bargains to betray him. This period culminates in the Last Supper and the Farewell
Discourse.

Other teachings of Jesus can be seen from the different parables in the bible like
the Parable of the Sower, Parable of the Mustard Seed etc.
The origin of Christian teachings is during His lifetime, Jesus preached the gospel,
meaning good news that God was coming to earth to save mankind.

Read me!
The genealogy and Nativity of Jesus are described in two of the four canonical
gospels: the Gospel of Matthew and the Gospel of Luke. While Luke traces the
genealogy upwards towards Adam and God, Matthew traces it downwards towards
Jesus. Both gospels state that Jesus was begotten not by Joseph, but conceived
miraculously in the womb of Mary, mother of Jesus by the Holy Spirit.
The next account of Jesus in the Gospel was during his baptism and his
temptation in the desert for 40 days, which happened when he was about 30. From
then he began his teachings to the people of Israel.
Since he was raised as a Jew, Jesus obeyed the laws and learned the Hebrew
scriptures. Nonetheless, he still thought independently, questioning the people on
strict adherence to the teachings at the cost of injustice and lack of love. Perhaps
his greatest emphasis was on universal, unconditional love, He taught that we must
forgive people endlessly. He even asked for forgiveness for those who crucified him.
He asks us to love everyone, even our enemies.
Jesus was condemned to death through the initiative of the chief priests and
the Pharisees he was criticizing.His passion and death is commemorated during the
Holy week, which culminates the Easter Sunday, where he supposedly rose from the
dead. After his death, his disciples continued his teachings into different nations.
The history of the Christian religion and the Christian church began
with Jesus and his apostles. Christianity is the religion that is based on the birth,
life, death, resurrection and teaching of Jesus Christ.
Christianity began in the 1st century AD after Jesus died, as a small
group of Jewish people in Judea, but quickly spread throughout the Roman empire.
Despite early persecution of Christians, it later became the state religion. In the Middle
Ages it spread into Northern Europe and Russia. During the Age of Exploration,
Christianity expanded throughout the world; it is currently the largest religion of the
world.
The religion had theological disputes that had as result three main branches:
the Roman Catholic Church, the Greek Orthodox church and Protestant churches.
Most of the first Christians were ethnically Jewish. An early difficulty came from
non-Jewish converts. There was the question if they had to "become Jewish" before
becoming Christian. The decision of St. Peter, was that they did not, and the matter was
further addressed with the Council of Jerusalem.
The doctrines of the apostles brought the Early Church into conflict with some
Jewish religious authorities, and this eventually led to the martyrdom of
SS. Stephen and James the Great and expulsion from the synagogues. Thus,
Christianity got an identity distinct from Judaism. The name "Christian" was first used for
the disciples in Antioch.

On the other hand, the Christian teachings and stories can be seen in the Old
Testaments [which are arranged in 3 parts:

Former Prophets (Joshua, Judges, Samuel 1-2, Kings 1-2)

Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah and
Malachi)
 The WRITINGS which includes Psalms, Proverbs, Job, Song of Songs, Ruth,
Lamentations, Ecclesiastes, Esther, Daniel, Ezra-Nehemiah and Chronicles.
