Name: __________________________ Section: ___________ Date: __________

A. Readings/Discussions

What is an Evaluative Statement?

Evaluation refers to the making of a value judgment. The taking of a position in a

controversy involves value judgments. To support the position, we must make value
judgement as well. Making value judgement involve the use of certain criteria against which
we determine whether something is good or bad, strong or weak, beautiful or ugly etc.

Bunnin and Yu (2004) disclosed that in philosophy of language and ethics, some
philosophers suggest that we distinguish between two kinds of meaning of expression.
Descriptive meaning contribute to a bare presentation of facts, is in the claim “This
strawberry is sweet.” Evaluative meaning functions in a different way by offering an
assessment, as in the claim “This strawberry is good.” The descriptive meaning of a
statement can be determined by its truth conditions, while the evaluative meaning cannot.
This is because the descriptive meaning is constant while the evaluative meaning varies with
the reactions of those using the expression. For instance, “war” has a fixed and translatable
descriptive beaning, but its emotive associations can give it different evaluative meaning.
For some, “war” evokes a feeling of terror, and for others it evokes a feeling of heroic
courage.

Rama Rao (2010) further expressed that evaluative statement cover three components
of the attitudes: Likewise, he noted that these concern object, people, or events.

Cognitive components of an attitude

• The beliefs, opinion, knowledge, and information held by a person

Affective components of an attitude

• The emotional, or feeling, segment of an attitude

Behavioral components of aa attitude

• An intention to behave in a certain way toward someone or something.

According to him, attitudes are evaluative statements either favorable or unfavorable
concerning object, people, or events. They reflect how an individual feel about something.
When a person says ‘I like my job’ he or she is expressing an attitude about work. To better
understand attitude, we will look at its three components: cognitive, affect and behavior. The
cognitive component of an attitude is made up of the beliefs, opinions, knowledge, and
information held by a person. The affective component of an attitude is the emotional, or
feeling, segment of an attitude. Cognitive and affect can lead to behavioral outcomes. The
behavioral component of an attitude refers to an intention to behave in a certain way toward
someone or something.

The theories and ideas lead the reader to be equipped with knowledge and skills on
the way one evaluates statements of the written text. Below are some guidelines:

Using Evaluative Statements to Define Strengths and Weakness

(source: http://learning.gov.wales/docs/learningwales/publications/090727-evaluative-
statements-en.pdf)

1. Statements should be evaluative, not descriptive. Wherever possible, include

specific information which enables strengths and weaknesses to be quantified.
Show why something is a strength or shortcoming, rather than just stating the
facts.
2. Use data and benchmark wherever possible – compare performance to
benchmarking data or show trends over previous rears. Compare outcomes to
target set previously by the provider. This helps to put raw data into context, and
to show that standards are improving, and the provider is moving on.
3. Be clear about where there are genuine strengths, rather than normal features
which would be expected in any provider. Compliance with stator or contractual
obligation is a norm, not a strength.
4. Show impact of both strengths and weakness – if surveys and review are
undertaken to assess effectiveness, how are the results acted on? If there is a
shortcoming, how does it impact on learners and other stakeholders?
5. Make statements clearer and more robust by showing how judgements have been
reached.
With the aim to make the reading activity more meaningful, these guidelines will help
readers as they evaluate significant statements. As they do so, they too will analyze whether
the action/statement is good or bad, right or wrong, moral or immoral. Moreover, looking
into its effectiveness and quality is highly essential.
In other words, reading is not comprehensive without having evaluated certain
statements therein. This time the reader can transform statements to judgements based on
their knowledge, attitude and behavior.
The following will help you formulate evaluative statements:
1. Examine the entire text. Scan the part you find significant. Jot down notes/reasons
what made it significant.
2. Trace reliable evidence to support your views and feelings.
3. Have a copy of the strengths and weaknesses. Once organized, counter check the
statements.
4. Evaluate whether your output covers the essential elements and is worthy for sharing
with the other readers or not.
5. Look back and reflect on the activity you have just accomplished.
Putting things together, you have now a clearer understanding on how to formulate
evaluative statements. In this way, ideas and opinions of the author are either directly
affirmed or negated rather, a good substance for richer discussion.

B. Exercises

Exercise 1: Let’s Think Critically

Directions: Read any recent article in the opinion section of a newspaper. Identify its
strengths and weaknesses, then, write down all unclear and clear statements about it.

Example:

therefore to complete their coursework on
time.

Exercise 2: Let’s Create

Directions: You learned earlier about the considerations you need to make when
formulating evaluative statements. Per the text, formulate an evaluative statement and label
it as either positive or negative, depending on the focus of the evaluation.

GUIDE

For the Teacher:

Amidst inevitable circumstances, Department of Education extends their resources and

looks for varied ways to cater your needs and to adapt to the new system of Education as a
fortress of Learning Continuity Plan. One of the probable solutions is the use of Self-Learning
Home Task (SLHT) in teaching.

The creation of this SLHT is a combined effort of competent educators from different
levels and various schools of Department of Education-Cebu Province. In addition, this SLHT
is meticulously planned, organized, checked, and verified by knowledgeable educators to assist
you in imparting the lessons to the learners while considering the physical, social, and
economical restraints in teaching process.

For the Learner:

This is your Self-Learning Home Task (SLHT) on “formulating evaluative statements

about a text read (EN11/12RWS-IVac-9)” as written and found in the K-12 Most Essential
Learning Competencies.

In using this SLHT, keep note of the fundamental reminders below.

• You should be responsible in reading and understanding every part of this self-
learning home task.
• You should manage your time carefully in doing all the activities while
considering the tasks from other subjects.
• You should not skip any part of this SLHT to avoid confusion and
misinterpretation.
• Make sure to clearly comprehend the first activity before proceeding to the next
one. If there is a part which is hard to understand, learn to utilize other available
resources or even ask help from your family members if possible.
• You should not procrastinate. Make a timetable for all your activities if
necessary.
• Neither copy the work of your classmate not let family members do your
activities/tasks. This is independent learning, so allow yourself to discover and
develop your own potentials.

For the Parent/Home Tutor:

The use of Self-Learning Home Task (SLHT) aims to overcome the challenges of
teaching in a new normal education set-up. Through this, the students are given independent
learning activities based on the Most Essential Learning Competencies which are anchored in
the K-12 Curriculum Competencies, to work on them in accordance with their capability,
efficiency, and time. Thus, this is helping the learners acquire the prerequisite 21st Century
skills needed by considering the holistic well-being of the learners.
If you wish to talk to the teacher/educator for some concerns/clarifications, do not
hesitate to keep in touch with him/ her for further discussion. Know that even if this is a home-
based class, the teacher is only a call away. Good communication between you, the teacher,
and the student is the top priority to flourish understanding on the given lessons.
Your major role is to help/guide the learner to accomplish all the given tasks on/before
the scheduled time. Your words of encouragement may help them cope with the challenge to
gain ample knowledge and skills to be fully equipped and ready to answer the demands of the
globally competitive world. Thank you so much!
